Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Back in Aotearoa after an absence of 12 months to find Shanghai Lils is now Bamboo Tiger. It will always be Shanghai Lils. Why tamper with a very long established brand? That said as a whole unchanged with the gloriously camp decor and it's fantastic that Billy still here on the piano on a Friday and Saturday evening. Remembered by Russell still doing his high kicks on the dancefloor!

The place has been renamed to Bamboo Tiger. The decor inside was quite spectacular. We had the Opium Den area in the back which was quite nice, even having its own bar. Space was a bit cramped but nice. I wasn't able to stay around for the drink though but was told they were nice.

My first time on K road, my first time in Shanghai Lils. It was amazing, both staff and customers were so very friendly. Everyone chatted with me including the staff, who were extremly busy, but still made time to give a personal touch. Cocktails were delicious, my favourite was the pornstar, I had too many, laughing. Music was easy listening and trendy and the volume still allowed conversation, which is great. I asked the bar manager for assistance in getting a taxi, he took me under his wing, ensuring I was safely in the taxi, Thankyou so very much, your concern and effort on my behalf was very much appreachiated.

The food and drink were excellent. While I only had drunk 2 glasses of red wine I managed to forget where I had parked my car and ended up taking a taxi home at a cost of $90. We found it easily the next day.

Good variety of patrons, friendly staff & decor suited the name of the bar. Was only there for 2 drinks but would definitely go back again.

A mixed crowd with a pleasant atmosphere. Friday and Saturday there is a piano and some jazz blues playing. Lovely little semi-private seating areas.

If you love a place with atmosphere and live music , here it is. Fantastic new location and comfortable sitting in almost 1930s China town high society. Put on your best threads and rock on along !

Bigger and better than Ponsonby Road, but the same smooth friendly vibe. Jazzy and fun. Gay and gay friendly, all ages, inclusive.

Shanghai Lils has moved from Parnell back to Ponsonby. A very modest menu is available but the focus is now squarely on delicious cocktails and great swing jazz. As such this is now a bar and music venue. The band is led by the legendary Billy Farnell, still playing well into his eighties. They have a range of female vocalists but the sound and feel is always great. The maitre D, Russell, makes sure every guest is welcomed and he has decorated the bar beautifully with wonderful Chinese lanterns and lush fabrics. The bar opens late afternoon and closes very late in the early hours of the morning. The crowd is always eclectic, the cocktails top notch and the music superb. Thee really isn't anything not to like.
