About
Café Hanoi is a modern Vietnamese restaurant housed within a heritage warehouse space in Britomart, the city’s oldest commercial district. The restaurant reflects our passion and respect for Vietnamese food and culture. Our menu offers authentic Hanoian street food that has made the city world famous, and other more modern dishes that pair traditional Northern Vietnamese cooking techniques with the best of New Zealand produce. We are very careful to choose ingredients that have been sourced with a deep respect for the environment.

Constantly good food with several old favourites still on the menu but constantly joined by new fresh and exciting dishes. With its totally open atmosphere the illusion of organised chaos reigns but Hanoi's friendly and multi national waiting staff still take the time to explain exactly what's on offer. Order and after a reasonable time incredible food starts arriving as if by magic. DINING TIP.... ensure you leave enough room for a hot soy milk doughnut to bring the whole experience to a sweet and memorable end.

Have been to Cafe Hanoi twice so far and never been disappointed with the meal. On both occasions I have been with a party of 6 and have asked the waitress to select for us. 3 course meal plus wine worked out at about $85 per person and well worth it. Great food, relaxed atmosphere and loved the ambience.

We had heard about Cafe Hanoi and researched it for our family trip. We went of a foodie tour and booked Cafe Hanoi for dinner. My 2 kids had never eaten Vietnamese food before so I wanted them to experience it. We ordered the duck rice paper rolls to share, Spicy Duck Pho for myself and Pork Belly salad for my daughter and the Wagyu Beef salad for my son. It was worth travelling for. Food and environment was excellent. All dishes had an authentic Vietnamese flavour and origin. Staff were friendly and attentive. Even given it was a public holiday the restaurant was busy but we still felt welcomed and valued as customers. If I had to be picky it was my Pho arrived 10 minutes before the kids meals so I had to sit and watch them eat - they weren't keen on sharing. We are keen to visit again.

To be fair, we are from Melbourne and have some amazing Vietnamese restaurants, so therefore have high expectations. This restaurant however, did not live up to its reputation. The food was bland and uninteresting. We ordered the mince beef rolls and the wontons for entree. Firstly, for share food it’s strange for an odd number of pieces to arrive, both dishes were ok, but lacked flavour. For main we had the chicken stir fry, this came with 6 tiny pieces of chicken and loads of onion, again lacking flavour. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.

Arriving in Auckland late on a Sunday evening we were looking for somewhere downtown for a meal. We finally saw that Cafe Hanoi was open. Despite having said we would never eat there again we gave it another try. Our previous negative impression was confirmed.
The food was fresh but tasteless. The service was non- existent and then when we went to pay the first screen asked if we wanted to give a tip, which we declined, and then we were asked to pay a fee for using a credit card????

Our lunch booking was right on opening time and when the door wasn't open at 12noon I rang to see if there was some reason and got a very rude and abrupt response. Very unusual for Café Hanoi as usually the customer services is superb. Once we finally got in, 15min late, got greeted by the same grumpy person that answered the phone I suspect...….after that was all fine, food lovely as normal and great table service.

Big Mistake: We failed to book a table in advance! Upon arrival in the early evening, the place was bursting at the seams. Initially, we were advised that we may have to wait up to 30 minutes for a table, which we fortuitously agreed to. The friendly Maitre de escorted us to the bar area and found two seats for us to relax and examine the menu over a Vietnamese beer. A mere 10 minutes later a table had been found. Despite the restaurant being extremely busy service was quick, friendly and professional, and we did not have to wait very long for our shared starter dish to be served. Fresh rice-paper rolls with softshell crab. My main course also included crispy soft-shell crab. I am a seafood lover after all! Both dishes were delicious. My wife's choice was lemongrass chilli tofu with mushrooms, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The servings were quite sufficient for us so we politely declined dessert. However, a surprise was in store as I had earlier casually mentioned to the Maitre de that we were celebrating my birthday. Lo and behold a complimentary dessert arrived which included a single candle to mark the occasion. A very nice touch! Would we dine there again. Absolutely! One problem. We live near Wellington and don't get to visit the City oif Sails very often, but the next time we do Cafe Hanoi will be right at the top of our agenda, and I'll ensure that we reserve a table!

We visited as a group of 6 for a birthday and chose the set menu which was outstanding - delicious fresh flavours, loads of variety, more food than we could possibly eat and great value. Love the new space with the laneway entrance. Café Hanoi is a reliable classic - highly recommended

We always enjoy dining at Cafe Hanoi. The food is always excellent and the service is excellent as well. The menu has a lot of interesting choices and some different, authentic cuisine.
My only issue with the restaurant is that menu mentions that gratuity is not included and when you go to pay they have an awkward "Do you want to add a tip?" question on the credit card machine. Tipping is not a part of kiwi culture and we really don't want it to be! The only people who benefit from a tipping culture are restaurant owners. I always get some anxiety towards the end of my meal thinking about the awkward question on the credit card machine!

Dined at Cafe Hanoi last evening, in its new location. The food here is really really good, which is why we keep coming back. The new location is also pretty good. The menu is not extensive, but there is plenty of choice and everything we tried was excellent. The drinks list is similar, not extensive but plenty of options and the pricing is very good. Service was reasonable, and the ambience was great - plenty of customers enjoying themselves and enjoying the great food. If you like Vietnamese food (and who doesn't) this is the place to go.

First time we have ever been to Cafe Hanoi. Saturday 13 Feb was our 39th Wedding Anniversary and we came across the ad for the "Valentines Day Menu for Two".
Sounded appealing, and extremely reasonable for $55 pp.
We were seated in a lovely area overlooking the street - not too noisy and intimate enough for us oldies to hear each other talk :D
We were not disappointed! The flavours, the textures, the presentation, the amount of food were all superb. And the wait staff were very attentive without being intrusive (they did not know the reason for our visit, so no 'extra' treatment).
The duck was delicious and the Raw Kingfish w lemongrass was superb. By the time we got to dessert we were quite full but, gosh, the dessert was not to be missed. A lovebirds dessert platter that was beautiful.
Thank you Cafe Hanoi - we will return.

We stopped in for a quick bite and it was so good we came back the next night for a more substantial dinner. Try the line caught baked whole fish which was Red Snapper, and add a side of warm cellophane noodles with mushrooms, bok choy and sugar snap peas. For shared plates try rice paper roll with garlic roast duck, lemongrass pork skewers, and the hot vegetable stir fry with oyster sauce. Friendly but soft spoken waitstaff. For nonalcoholic beverages try the Herbalist made with passionfruit and herbs. The entrance is understated with a tiny sign on the building. Look for two brown doors and a sign on the sidewalk.

The vibe, decor, staff, and especially the choices and presentation of the variety of dishes was faultless!
Congratulations to Krishna whose vision, expertise and passion shines through. She was even there quietly behind scenes helping, directing her well trained staff. Their delivery showed the respect and fun in their roles. Think I’ll go back next week 🤗

Gourmet fusion Vietnamese food at reasonable prices in the middle of downtown Auckland. Restaurant has very good classy ambiance great for group gatherings or a chilled out dinner for couples. Mains for sharing are really sufficient for single person and if shared, a couple of mains are suggested. Service is excellent but if your table are close to the street front, you maybe neglected by the staff due to the docorative front wall (probably original wall of the building). The Pho is a little bland in taste by Sydney Pho standards and the beef well done but still tender. Would recommend other dishes. Restaurant entrance is well hidden and takes a little while to find.
