So Glad We Came Here For Breakfast

We were staying in the CBD visiting a sick relative and we had had pretty average food experiences up to then so we decided to look up good cafes/breakfast venues on the North Shore as that would be where we were re-visiting our brother. Takapuna Beach Cafe popped up and we realised we had been here a few times for takeaway coffees/food when we’d stayed in an Airbnb a year or so ago. No on-line booking but we’ll take our chances. And it was completely fabulous from whoa to go. Greeted and seated, given sparkling water and menus. Gorgeous setting and very bustly vibe. Do not go to this venue if you are afraid of dogs! However, I wanted to take each dog home with me, so for us it was a bonus, our meals were delicious - crayfish omelet for him with a truly bougie iced coffee, and for me eggs on toast with a sausage side (lamb and next level good) with a berry smoothie (so tart and fresh). Service was attentive without being intrusive and we took some fantastic takeaways for the invalid (a gorgeous bacon and egg breakfast roll and almond croissant) which he hoovered back when we got there. What a lovely cafe to have right on the beach. Great people watching, good value for money and we would definitely be back next time we are in the city of sails

Excellent food with a great view.

Make sure you are hungry! There was a line up outside, but got a seat after only about a ten minutes wait. It’s a great view from the cafe and the food was exceptional - eggs hollandaise with bacon on a potato rosti. Amazing

Spectacular location, gorgeous food.

What a wonderful place! We needed to find somewhere to while away a couple of hours after getting off the plane. Picked this place purely on location and we’re so glad we dropped on this cafe. The food is reasonably priced, the quality is excellent and the staff even better. My eggs Benedict on a slab of rosti with huge chunks of smoked salmon was spectacular. I imagine that we will be paying a return visit before we depart Auckland.

Teeny tiny fish portion at takeaway window

We went for fish and chips at the takeaway window. We ordered the market fish, chips, a chicken burger, sausage on bread, and later: icecream. The fish serving was shockingly tiny. Nugget sized! The attached photo is the fish compared to my 14 year old's finger (yes, that's the entire portion!). The chips were cold. The manager was understanding and offered another round of fish and a hot serving of chips. All the staff were great. I think the owner must be trying to save money with tiny fish portions? It's not fair that the staff have to deal with this! The owner should either call the fish "nuggets", or increase the portion size to something any reasonable person would expect! Thank you to the staff for handling this with grace and good humour. BTW, the chicken burger, sausage on bread, and icecream/sorbet scoops were delicious and good value. The fish portion is the only let down at the takeaway window

Our Local favourite disappoints..

Today's visit is a major disappointment. Not sure if we're coming back ever. Our daughter did our take away orders as we decided to sit in the car facing Rangitoto instead of taking a table. First issue was when ordering she politely called the attention of the attendant that there was a huge fly on the food inside the display counter, she was dismissed condescendingly, like it was something normal. The second was when she returned to ask for extra sugar after her mother said that the coffee was bitter, she was subjected to very rude questioning by another attendant. Not sure this was a pandemic related stress but it is unexcusable and uncalled for.

Glorious beach lunch

Family trip to Takapuna. After a great walk to Milford and back along the beach we stopped here for lunch. A glorious day we all enjoyed excellent fish and chips. Service was really good, efficient and friendly The fish was fresh and tasty and perfectly cooked A great way to enjoy lunch on the beach

Four friends, we turned up at 12 on a public holiday and we lucky enough to get a table, lovely staff, we were seated, given menus and water (sparkling) straight away, and an order for coffee was taken after a minute or so. The coffee is good, hot and strong and the long black comes with a side of hot water. Perfect. A gripe here for those of us who love food and scan the menu online before arriving: PLEASE update your online menu when you update your in-house menu! I had decided upon the mussels with a back up of the big grill for the homemade sausages but found that there were no mussels on the menu and the big grill had cabbage instead of sausages. So I had to make a quick decision and this resulted in disappointment. The beef burger was tasteless, under seasoned and frankly very underwhelming. The mushroom duxelle was barely able to be tasted so all you really got was plain beef and bread. The wait staff told us that it would be cooked medium well done. It was cooked well done. The other beef burger at the table was ordered with bacon but didn't fare much better, being only half eaten. The chips were good, as was the aioli. The avocado with burnt tomato was very well appreciated and the rosti eggs bene with bacon looked fab and the plate was scraped clean. I wanted so much to like my meal, as everything else was great, lovely people, good ambience, great location and excellent coffee, but having to make a snap decision when both my chosen items weren't on the in- house menu and the resulting lacklustre beef burger left me disappointed. Would definitely return but wouldn't get the burger again. Or get prematurely excited by the online menu.

Disappointing menu

Lovely location almost beachside and a nice ambience. Unfortunately the menu was disappointing especially the gluten free or dairy free options. My meal was basically a large bag of cold soft cheese on some cold ribbons of raw zucchini. It certainly wasn't described this way on the menu. Obviously my understanding of roasted zucchini is different to the chef's. I would not take my friends there again.

Takapuna beach side gem or are we overseas?

Lucky to visit this gem twice in a week at the Northern end of Takapuna Beach. Lovely location, very impressed with excellent attentative service. This team is well trained and focused on the customer be it at a very busy NY period. Tried several items from the great menu, ...yes visit one had the big breakfast / Allpress coffee and visit two had a very tasty smahed spicy avocado and several coffees. Location on a fine day reminds me of a up market overseas Cafe. Well done, totally recommend.

Disappointing long-term favourite

The Takapuna Beach Cafe has long been a favourite haunt of mine for a coffee or something a little more substantial. The food has always been good and the service friendly and efficient. On this occasion, however, both were a bit of a let down. I ordered the French Toast with bacon ($26) and my companions both had the Fish Burger ($25). The French Toast, although perfectly pleasant, was somewhat meagre in serving size and just lacked flair. The Fish Burger was given a definite thumbs down - 'ordinary' is the only way to describe it. The slab of cheese on top of the fish, which had no hope of melting due to its thickness, did not help. The service was okay but just lacked the energy we have seen in the past.

Memorable Whitebait Omelette Lunch

First visit since ownership change early 2020. Impressive welcome from James and his team who were very engaging, knowledgeable and attentive. Our whitebait omelette orders were of generous size and cooked to perfection, which in combination with attractive sea views, delivered a memorable lunch. Recommended.

The beachfront location doesn’t

The beachfront location doesn’t get any better than this in Auckland. The staff are friendly and attentive but do you get the impression they’re keen to move you along quickly to free up space ... this place is busy! Seems the prime seating outside is taken by groups getting together for coffee and enjoying the luxury of time. Our lunch for two was over $80 and consisted of smashed avo, pasta and 1 iced coffee. Menu pricing is misleading and definitely overpriced for our experience today. That said, I’d go back here for a coffee early morning and enjoy the view for much less!

Close but no cigar

First of all the positives - the location was excellent, the food was excellent and the service was excellent. But, in spite of this, and the reason we won’t be going back and the low rating, was because throughout our breakfast there were constant shout outs for takeaway coffee orders being ready. This was staff INSIDE the cafe shouting to customers OUTSIDE the cafe that their coffee was ready. It completely ruined what should have been a nice relaxing breakfast. The shame is that it’s completely avoidable - there has to be a better (and quieter) system for letting people know their order is ready.

Great Views

The store is located beside the cafe and it was busy the whole time I was there. It looked like they had cabinet food, ice cream and coffee for those wanting to grab something on the go. I went to the cafe to have afternoon tea. It wasn't too busy so I was able to grab a table on the deck outside. It was quite nice with the breeze and the views of the beach. I got water and menus after finding a seat. It didn't take long to get someone to take my order. I tried the roulade cake from the store as well as an iced caramel. I quite liked the ice caramel. The caramel was salted just the right amount so it was sweet and salty at the same time. The hazelnut and chocolate roulade was ok. The sponge itself was a bit dry and hard to eat. Having it with the cream inside made it taste nicer and it was a lot more enjoyable. The food menu was quite interesting but the breakfast items were only available until 1500. The nice location and food makes it a nice place to grab some food.

Birthday lunch

In a lovely location right on the beach at Takapuna you have the choice of dining inside or out on the deck under the sun umbrellas. Blankets are provided on windy days. The service was good, the food magnificent. I enjoyed the eggs Benedict so much I went back the next day for another helping. My relatives enjoyed their meals also.
