Return visit and what a surprise

Over the passed 20 years we had visited Terrace Downs on numerous occasions, to varying levels on service and food standards. Over the last few years we have not visited, due to the last experience being not that pleasurable. What a pleasant surprise we got on out recent visit, form the arrival and welcome, the level of service, the quality of the food and the overall experience.. Okay, there are a few things that let down the side, I am still awaiting a reply to an email sent some weeks ago and also a reply to a phone message left at the same time. Also the dining chairs require a full dusting / polish, especially on the rear cross supports and lower stay. Saying that we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience and will return soon.

Fabulous lunch venue

My husband and I had a most enjoyable lunch at Terrace Downs Cafe last Sunday - good service, delicious food and a fabulous view from our outside table - looking forward to going again as there was a good menu with several Gluten Free options from which I chose the lamb loin. This was nicely presented in good time (in spite of the busy lunch time) and totally delicious. We went for a walk down to the river and returned for an excellent cup of coffee with more friendly service. Great that this cafe has reopened!

Gather a Group of Golfing Mates and Head to Terrace Downs

Last week we were lucky enough to spend 3 nights at the Terrace Downs Resort with 5 other couples. We received a warm welcome on arrival and throughout our stay the staff were most helpful and very friendly. The food and service from breakfast, through to lunch and dinner was excellent. The golf course is challenging, but a lot of fun. We stopped off at the restaurant after 9 holes for lunch at the restaurant and that wasn't a problem at all. A cart is a must and rates for both accommodation and golf are very competitive at present.

We have been coming to Terrace downs for the last 6 or 7 years. The situation is just beautiful at the base of Mount Hutt. The weather is very dramatic and enhances the beauty of the place. The resort has new owners who are trying their very best to provide a high country experience for diners accommodation and golfers. They have just been bought up by a large hotel group and I think it is the best thing that could happen to the Resort. Wonderful food, wonderful place run by great passionate people.

Worth the trip

It was snowing up there and these guys had a roaring fire going it was so warm and welcoming and really busy. I had the soup and bread which was delicious and my husband had the vension also fab. The girls that served us were friendly and knowledgable, it was a great sunday lunch

Fabulous dinner at the Terrace Downs restaurant

We had a great experience at the restaurant at Terrace Downs. Outstanding service by Pip, a stunning steak dish by Scott the chef, and it was great to be greeted by the Duty Manager Gus. Fabulous wine and a throughly enjoyable evening.

Great food and golf course

Very good menu, tasty tasty food. Staff were welcoming from woe to go. Fantastic late afternoon of golf “No wind” finished off with a great meal.

Sadly the restaurant lets down the rest of the venue

After booking a night away as a surprise for my husband's 50th I emailed the restaurant about our dietary needs (as I always do in advance) to check they could cater for us - being gluten and dairy free. After being assured it wasn't a problem, I made a booking and several days later we arrived and rocked up the restaurant. To say they seemed disorganised is an understatement - first the person who greeted us said we didn't have a booking, then someone else found us on another sheet and just said find a table! Once we did, we reviewed the menu and asked questions of the waitress to try to get clarity on what our accommodation package offered, as well as options for our dietary needs - seems easy right? No .. lol. It was a shambles! To cut a very long story short, as I could take you through the entire debacle we were told the chef was "too busy" to accommodate our needs and ended up with a VERY average meal and experience. The only highlight for the night was Roman, the outstanding F&B supervisor who stepped in to try and resolve the issues. Unfortunately, he was let down by the kitchen and to be honest I would only go back to stay there if we took our own food to prepare in the villa, I wouldn't return to the restaurant until they have sorted the issues out. We were there over two hours and ended up taking our dessert away with us. If they can't cope with the numbers don't take so many bookings! Otherwise sort yourself out as the food and overall service (except for Roman) certainly did not live up to other reviews on here and was actually appalling and doesn’t do anything for the legacy of Terrace Downs as a premium venue to visit/stay. I won't start on the "breakfast" that was included in the package either - this was a joke and only thing I could eat was a fruit cup .. otherwise you can pay $18 for the cooked breakfast but I chose not to do this and just had something later.

Each dish is a delight

The cafe with the best view! Overlooking the beautiful grounds of the Golf Course and lake. Service was excellent and your waitress or waiter became a new friend!

Meatless Beef Burger!

We had a family lunch here on Boxing Day. The service was ok, not great as you might expect at a golf resort of this caliber. The meals were good, however my beef burger came out without a beef patty. They sorted out out ok, but weren’t apologetic at all and offered no compensation, not that we expected any (you never know though). The meatless burger did create a few laughs following the experience. Fantastic views from the cafe terrace over the golf course, gorge and Mt Hutt.

Definitely 'DOWN' at Terrace Downs Cafe

It is some time since the last visit to this cafe, at which time the quality of the fish and chip meal was disappointing. However, felt it was worth another try. Sadly this experience was no better. John Dory, salad & fries. The presentation consisted of two pieces of palatable fish, about 3/4 of a cup of very basic salad and a half a plate full of shoestring fries - very unbalanced with so much of the meal being fries and grossly overpriced at $33. There was nothing about this meal that would promote a return visit. Very disappointing after the drive out but the setting is beautiful - especially with a dusting of snow around. The quality of the food on the menu definitely needs to be looked at.

Well priced breakfast

Drive from methven through Rakaia Gorge for breakfast at TD cafe. Well worth the drive. Beautiful scenery from the cafe. Menu selection great and very very well priced. Would recommend this cafe restaurant to anyone wanting a drive out to the mountains.

Set menu with nice choices

We were with 20 people and the $50 set menu was lovely, and most of the food was great. The grilled fish for 3 people was served raw which was a bit unfortunate, but it was a busy day and accidents happen. Overall good food and well presented.
