We were looking for a fish and chip shop handy to our accommodation to avoid catching the ferry to Whitianga. Very impressed with the quality of the fish n chips, I normally have crumbed fish but it wasn’t available here. BUT Their batter was very...light, the fish was super fresh and the chips were well done as I requested this. Would def recommend.More

Very disappointed in this horrible meal, after reading all the terrible reviews I decided to give the frying Scotsman a shot. After a hard days mahi me and the boys headed down to the frying Scotsman for a feed, frankly I’d rather lick the yeast...of my grandmas dirty knickers in the laundry then have to suffer through meal so bad an Ethiopian child would turn it down. Very disappointed guys, sort it out!!More

When you order a price of fish at a nz fish n chip shop you expect a fresh price of fish not a tiny peice of a fillet. Really disappointing. These guys are trading off having zero competition. I tried to phone them to offer...the courtesy of complaining directly but they don’t answer the phone in the busy season.More

If you are looking for a quick meal during the busy summer season you won't get it here. Food quality varies a lot from OK to bad. Soggy fish batter, and the quantity of chips varies a lot. The wait time can be 3/4 hour.

This place was excellent for our needs. My family and my sister's family enjoyed eating here multiple times during our stay at Cook's Beach. The food tasted delicious, especially the salt and pepper squid. I was surprised to find my favorite food in New Zealand...here at a small place in Cook's Beach. The lovely lady that runs this store is super nice and was generous to me and my family. I made sure that the last thing I ate before leaving for home to the US was their salt and pepper squid! I highly recommend eating here!More

Stopped here for a quick bite of food after a day out hiking. They were out of the fresh fish by the time we got there which was a bummer but it was still really good! We went back a few days later. Would recommend.

Having excitedly gone to this Fish n Chip shop to eagerly order dinner for my son who specifically asked for 3 pieces of crumbed fish. 1 piece normally is a struggle to get him to eat at anytime. So I started with the order, do...you crumb fish, no sorry we don’t have the facility to crumb fish, what the???? Ok, can I have 3 pieces of Tarakihi, sorry we don’t have any. No gurnard either even though both species of fish are advertised. Ok have you got Hoki? Yep. Cool 3 pieces please. Can you do a cheese toasted sandwich? No we’ve got no bread. We have burger buns but can’t do a cheese only burger. Starting to laugh now. How many scoops of chips for us? Considering we are hungry? You’ll only need 2 as 3 scoops feed 4-5 people (yeah if you have had your stomach stapled and don’t eat potato’s !!). On the bright side they did have chicken nuggets and crumbed mussels (factory processed cardboard actually). $38 later dinner ordered. Now the wait with great anticipation. Refer photo yes that is the $38 worth. 🤮 I could have changed the oil in my truck with the way the fish was dripping. The 2 scoops (which would be enough for us) hardly touched the side of my sons throat and were gone. The fish was clearly frozen processed muck. Considering this is a beach area less than 35 minutes drive (or a quick 5-10 minute ferry trip) to Whitianga you’d expect some fresh fish. Service was poor, smiles clearly were not for Friday’s. Then some rude lady came out from the kitchen area and interrupted me making my order to tell the shop assistant to hurry up and get an order out from the hot box to some other customer waiting. If I didn’t know better I would have started looking for the hidden camera. I suggest that no one braves this place and do not make the mistake of reading the bad reviews and still go there!!More

Previous decent experiences here, but shocking this time. When ordering, i asked what size the pizza was. "Large" came the answer. Nothing more. Anyway, they weren't. Small and expensive, with diced toppings, youd be better heating a frozen one from the shop next door. Also...bought $10 worth of chips - would be a single scoop anywhere else. Basically disinterested kids on duty, nothing good to say. Business seems to be for sale. Say no more.More
