Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were picked up from Omakau by the owner, David, who took us on a short tour of Ophir, taking in the suspension bridge and beautifully preserved buildings from gold-mining days. The restaurant itself was in a renovated butcher shop with stone walls and historical details- a beautiful and intimate space. The menu provided plenty of choices and we settled on a soup starter, beef and venison mains, mixed vegetable and homemade chips side dishes. All the details for an amazing meal were there and everything was absolutely delicious. We were most impressed by the service and personal touch and are only disappointed that we do not live closer. I highly recommend going here - it is not to be missed.

We are staying at Pitches Store Lodge for our journey on the Otago Rail Trail. Our hosts Colleen and David made reservations for us and we’re happy they did. New Zealand has a generally high standard for dining out and Pitches is the best we have struck so far. Beautifully cooked and presented our meals were well beyond anything we expected. And the renovation they have done to the building is outstanding. We would certainly recommend pitches to anybody to stay and/or dine.

We were a group of 12 biking the rail trail and were lucky enough to be booked into Pitches for the night by Bike It Now. We had a warm welcome from Colleen and the team. The rooms were absolutely gorgeous. We regret not staying for dinner as to food looked amazing and other diners raved about it. Alas we were welcomed back after our very average pub meal with some lovely glasses of Pinot.
Breakfast was very good and the staff did an amazing job putting it all together with power out across the region. Thank you for a fantastic stay Colleen and team!

Had lovely overnight stay and meal at Pitches store on Friday. Wonderful hospitality, food amazing (the mint sorbet with the lamb yum) . The spa was nice on the wintery night too. Def recommend if you want something bit more special than a pub meal in stunning Central Otago location

Ophir is just a short deviation from the main road but well worth it! The food and service was excellent. We are outside surrounded by beautiful productive gardens and watched the chef pop outside to harvest fresh herbs for a plate he was preparing. What was to have been a quick look at a small place turned out to be the highlight of our day. There are other attractions in the village as well especially an old Post Office and historic bridge.

We had a wonderful stay here on our first night on the Otago Rail Trail. Accomodation is modern and clean, the spa under the stars is spectacular especially for soaking our muscles!
dinner and breakfast were amazing and showcased much local produce as well as plenty of creativity.
We were the only guests so had plenty of great conversation with Coleen and Javi the chef
We can’t wait to come back!

The food was divine, stunning presentation... but so little of it. I like to think when we're paying a reasonable amount for a meal that i will end up not feeling hungry and having to order a bowl of chips to fill up.

We were lucky to stay at Pitches Store accommodation in Ophir for two nights and enjoyed two delicious meals and breakfasts in their restaurant. Excellent quality ingredients and a skilled chef resulted in the best meals we had on our two week trip. I really appreciated how thoughtfully put together our breakfasts were too, especially since I eat a gluten free diet.I envy the locals who are able to enjoy Pitches often.

I ordered lamb. The plate consisted of three very small pieces of lamb which was fifty percent thick fat. The accompanying croquettes were small and inedible as they were so dry. The mushrooms were tough and inedible.
I advised the female owner of my disappointment and showed her the large pieces of thick fat on my plate. There was no apology or any acknowledgement at all of my complaint.
My friends and myself left without ordering dessert as planned.

Hi Claire
I was aware of your complaint and was surprised to see the food left on your plate. I spoke to the head chef who has looked at the other lamb in the same batch and has spoken with the supplier who has checked with the processing plant. Apparently there has been some problems with how the cuts have been processed meaning there is too much fat on the loin and it is hard to render down without overcooking the lamb. I am sorry the croquettes were dry and the mushrooms inedible as that is not usually the case. However it is always beneficial to bring your concerns to our attention and we have discussed the with our chefs and kitchen staff so more care can be taken.

This is probably the best restaurant in town, with a gourmet menu and wine list and excellent service. They were generous in allowing us to use their wifi to check the weather forecast for our next day on the rail trail even though we were only dinner guests and not staying on site.
Highly recommended for a top end dining experience.

Delicious food in a lovely setting, the only thing stopping this being 5 stars was that it took a very long time for our food to arrive (lunch - 40 minutes) which is ok for dinner, but a bit slow during the day. That said, if you weren't in a hurry, a really pleasant venue and all the diners seemed to be really enjoying their meals. (And thumbs up for the variety on the menu!)

Pitches was by far the most delicious and amazing dinner we’ve had in this area. Seriously, if you want a satisfying and yummy meal, come here. Hubby actually wanted to return the next night but we were flying out in the AM. The prices might seem high, but it’s worth every mouthful as ingredients are fresh and local. Brother-in-law from Texas, who’s hard to please, loved it as much as we did. Don’t miss your chance to eat here. If they are filled up, which often happens, try to go the next day. It’ll be worth the effort.

David from Pitches Store picked us up from our Omakau accommodation their courtesy van, made us feel instantly at ease and proceeded to share local history on the way to Ophir via the 1880 O’Connell suspension bridge. Pitches Store is a beautifully restored building and courtyard garden for outdoor eating. The wait staff were friendly and served the delicious meals we choose. Colleen and David are wonderful hosts at a place that was a great way to end our first day riding the Otago Rail Trail.

Could not fault the lovely overnight accommodation as part of our Central Otago Rail Trail bike trip. Comfortable, quiet, very clean with friendly staff except for the lady on breakfast duty next morning - the first thing she told us when we walked in for breakfast (we were 5 mins early) was that there is no coffee from the machine as there was only her, she then pointed to the jar of Mocconna instant coffee! Unacceptable in my books when paying over $300 a night for B&B, How hard is it to make a real coffee, especially when you only have what I think were 11 or 12 guests in house. None of us were in a rush and I didn't see any other paying guests.
