Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Five Stags is a modern bar and restaurant attached to the historic Alexandra Hotel in Pirongia. Nice airy building with seating inside and out. Draft beer selection is pretty so so, with the only decent offering being Panhead Supercharger. Good range of pub food; we had wedges and nachos, both of which were tasty. Modern and clean toilet facilities. Worth a stop if you’re passing through town, or have just completed the Mt Pirongia summit track like we had!

Stopped on a Sunday on way back to Auckland after the family had been skiing. Phoned ahead and a table was ready for us. Great almost British pub feel to the place. Food was freshly prepared and they were very happy to produce a bowl of rice for our 4 yr old granddaughter who is only interested in rice at the moment. Good selection of beers and cider. Venison burgers were very good and the kumura fries excellent. The venison pizza was good too so my son in law tells me. Worth a stop.

Sunday lunch in Pirongia. Cold beer ( reasonably priced ) then we both had Eggs Bene, one with bacon, the other with salmon, both served on potato rosti. Absolutely delicious. Will return.

We booked this at the last minute, the lady on the phone.... I'm assuming the new owner, wasn't very good. My friend was showering his kids, no soap, and when asked the owner for soap she told him she was busy. Finding your room after dark was a challenge, no lighting, no clear signage pointing where to enter the room, we spend 20 minutes in the dark with kids trying to get into the building. The road is fairly busy at night so lots of road noise!. The bar is a nice setting, though coffee machine was out of order, no Guinness beer, if this place doesn't step up, they're not going to have many returning customers, as customer service is sloppy.

We were driving down to new Plymouth from pahi and decided to stop in Pirongia as it had a place to stay for us being self contained campers. An out of nowhere place. Went across to to 5 Stags for drinks and dinner. It was surprisingly very busy and we had a great time there. Service was excellent food was excellent. We were so surprised at how busy the little town was. Trucks going through day and night.

Stayed in the Alexandra Hotel for a night. Was $95 for a nice room however it was extremely noisy with trucks going past all night. Windows should be double glazed or have heavy curtains to keep the noise out a bit. Showers were stone cold, no hot water at all- not nice on a winter's morning! and automatic lights in bathroom turned off which meant you were showering in complete darkness. Shower had no pressure either. Only 1 towel per couple too which meant we would have to share.

Went to 5 Stags for tea last night and what a disappointment Ordered a Thai Salad and Caribbean curry Firstly the Thai salad main could barely fill a dessert bowl so I questioned whether that was it . The staff took it back and returned with twice the amount so ok . When I was eating it ,the flavour was no where near Thai in fact the dressing tasted like balsamic and there was no coriander ,chilli or even chilli lime dressing so may as well have been col saw with noodles and nuts. Secondly the caribbean curry .Tasted like curry powder had been used..Nothing remotely carribbean about it, where was the lime? . I suggest the chef go to a proper restaurant and see how proper thai salad and currys are done or come to my place and i will show him because it was that bad.

This is our second time to the Five Stags pub in Pirongia. We are from Sydney so when we y to NZ we stay with family in Putaruru which is Approximately 1hr drive away from Pirongia but we make the drive to the Five Stags because of the view, the food and the decor. The pub is relatively new and has a miners shack / hunters trophy room feel and it's very cool. The five stag heads behind the bar is a great photo opp. The food is amazing here. I recommend the venison burger because it's always asking and why not eat a stag at the Five Stags?

Stopped for family dinner on way south, by chance. Loved it. Delicious venison burger with kumara chips, wife had delicious beef burger and kids had kids nuggets and chips (gf option). Delicious. Lots of GF options (altho big note on door says not coeliac friendly - helpful to know). Good beers and wines on tap. Not super high end but that’s cool. See some bad reviews on this site. They seem a long time ago. Heaps of locals in on a Friday night with kids - all enjoying it. Highly recommend.

The exterior signage now refers to the location as Five Stags. We stopped in this small town for lunch and were delighted by the fresh lunch choices, especially the fish tacos.
