Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

So, we hit up Charlie's after cruising around Waiheke Island. Tucked right by the beach, it's got both indoor and outdoor seating, and the vibe is buzzing with live music. You'll find a bunch of locals and tourists hanging out, and the best part? It's...totally dog-friendly. Now, onto the nitty-gritty: the service was a bit of a letdown. Orders got mixed up, and we were left twiddling our thumbs for way too long. Despite that hiccup, if you're into laid-back vibes and good grub, Charlie's could be worth a shot.More

I'm frankly astonished at all the poor reviews. I visited recently with family including 2 picky toddlers and someone who is a coeliac. The restaurant team seemed really clued up about gluten free food and were able to suggest suitable choices and confirmed they had...a gluten free frier. The children really enjoyed their fish and chips which were beautifully presented in a bento box The other food was good too. Service was prompt and friendly. All in all it was a super family lunch. Yes, the toilets are a bit small... but that's not how I rate my restaurants.More

Great place for service and food, just don’t use the bathrooms. They are old tired and grubby. There was only a tiny trickle of water in the hand basin and the air hand drier didn’t work. For this reason I wouldn’t return.

We stopped here for breakfast one morning whilst staying locally and we are so glad we ignored the few poor reviews and listened to the majority. We were served by 2 very polite and attentive waitresses, who served us delicious tea and coffees, our food...followed quickly after and it was exceptional, coupled with an amazing setting. We had the full breakfast and the avocado on toast, both amazing and the portion sizes were huge. If (when) we return to Waiheke we will definitely be back. Keep up the good work and impeccable food, definitely worth all 5 stars.More

Fish n chips dreadful. One was not cooked in centre - still liquid batter and raw fish, other small dry fish in large cakey batter. Chips not good. Poor value for $32 each. To credit they did not charge us and substituted a burger served...on bun with single lettuce leaf and oily onion ring. Toilets small cramped and worn floor and grotty. Water glasses not clean and had lip prints so not washed properly. Great view did not compensate for very poor dining experienceMore

My husband and I had read some reviews that werent that favourable but decided to check it out ourselves. We loved Charlie Farleys. We took the bus as we were staying in Oneroa - bus stops right outside :) and you catch it again just...around the corner. We just had some snacks (calamari and chips - both yum), and a couple of drinks each. We both enjoyed our time here - moved tables twice - all are good (outside). But we were keen to have the table right at the roadside and watch the beach while we sat having our drinks. Great vibe here. Good service. Its popular especially at lunch time (and probably dinner time too). Loads of staff on the day we visited so there was no waiting. We even enjoyed an ice cream on the way out from their ice cream cart out the side of the restaurant and those were yum too! Hope to be back.More

Catching up with a friend, decided to come here as I have never been. The girl at FOH was quite rude and what seemed like impatient as she wanted to hurry us up and kept finishing our sentences for us ( all we were trying...to do was ask where we can sit and if we are able to just order a coffee but we were being interrupted by her) Finally we say we would like coffees to take away as I couldn’t be bothered dealing with the attitude she asked to order on the side where they do take away coffees, which is fine as long as we could get away from the ‘assume it all ‘ lady. I wanted to leave as I don’t believe in spending money somewhere where my money isn’t wanted but my friend really wanted a coffee. Ok we order one. The other girl making coffees looked like she did not want to be there, I suggest talk to your employees about not just being there to get money and go home when it’s time to clock off but also about customer service. Anyway our coffee. It was burnt and so awful. Should have trusted my instincts and left as soon as the lady made her not so good impression when we first came in. We left our coffees and just left. All it takes is a great attitude which these working holiday people seem to have a lack of on this island. Such a shame as the setting of this place was so beautiful. Too bad we didn’t not get to enjoy it.More

This establishment presented an exceptionally disappointing experience, one that falls far short of acceptable standards. Initially enticed by the promise of market-fresh fish, I was dismayed to find that the dish served was nothing more than ordinary pub-style fish and chips, yet priced exorbitantly. Suspicions...regarding the value were further confirmed when a measurement of a 250 ml wine serving revealed a significant shortfall. My displeasure was compounded by the egregiously slow service. An incident involving the use of profane language by the individual identified as the general manager – a certain Mat or Nat, distinguishable by his glasses and dismissive demeanor – occurred within earshot of my children, prompting a relocation to an outdoor seating area. This change, however, did little to alleviate the situation. Upon lodging a complaint, I was met with an attitude from the manager that suggested I was the issue, an utterly disrespectful and unprofessional response. This encounter seemed to precipitate a deliberate delay in service, as evidenced by the 40-minute wait for our meal on a day that was far from busy. Observations of hygiene practices, or the lack thereof, further marred the experience. A bartender was seen garnishing drinks without gloves, raising concerns about contamination. This, coupled with the sight of glasses being washed in murky water and the questionable ice handling practices, raises serious health and safety concerns. While the location's natural beauty is undeniable, it is grossly undermined by the subpar management and service. This establishment, in its current state, is a lamentable waste of a splendid setting.More

CFs commands a good view of the beach given its location and the staff are friendly. Sadly that’s all the positives, unfortunately the menu is a little off, seemly interesting but just not working. The basics looked.. well pretty basic. Fries were below average looking...so we upgraded to the truffle fries which were basically fries with a skimpy dash of Parmasan. I ordered the ceviche which came with raw diced kumera which felt like an odd combination, the rice cracker was stale and chewy., the fish was very raw rather than properly cured. Partner chose the Cesar salad which tasted like it had been sat in the fridge for a few days. The dishes were expensive so you’d expect a little more refinement in flavor and presentation.More

This place is OK for coffee and maybe a beer. . The view is great, the staff are friendly, and the fries are good. But we went for dinner yesterday and were VERY disappointed. The waitress suggested the favourites and we ordered . My partner...had the wagyu burger. This was a simple affair with a crumbed onion ring and the patties and a gherkin, and nothing else. It was however the best of the meal . My grand daughter had the salmon poke bowl, but did not eat any of it it as the whole had an odd dressing, the salmon was cut up into small pieces and mixed / jumbled up with odd things not expected in a poke bowl. I ordered the caesar salad : a whole bowl of cos lettuce with brown patches, prawns with heads on that were not very fresh, a refrigerated poached egg (!) stale croutons and again an odd dressing. The anchovies were one good thing taste wise, but were a bit odd with the cold egg and the prawns . Quite disgusting. The truffle fries were nice so we ate them up and drank more wine. I would suggest you think twice before going to Charlies for anything apart from a coffee, which is such a pity. Onetangi needs a more casual restaurant ( the other 2 are high priced with a dress code which seems crazy for a beach) but really it should be serving good quality simple food.More

Great spot close to the beach! I used to be a regular, but unfortunately the last couple of times I have been disappointed. Experience tarnished due to menu deterioration - options have reduced along with plate diversity and portion sizes. Fish and chips is literally...just that (when previously served with a nice salad), $27 for an entree of calamari (again, full plate of fried food with a few dollops of hummus). Would prefer more garnish on my plate from an establishment, rather than entirely fried food, otherwise would rather opt for takeaway fish and chips on the beach. Alternatively, would rather spend an extra $5-$10 for a delicious main and classier service at neighbouring restaurants.More

Relaxing beach restaurant with a great view over Onetangi beach. We came here twice during our trip and loved the vibe. We just had beers and snacks, but the menu offers much more. A great place to hang out and watch the waves. It is...on the hop on hop off bus route and we also saw the regular island busses stopping here. Very friendy staff.More
