We had a wonderful meal at this magical place in the courtyard of ‘grad’ of Stanjel. Actually they are closed on Monday evening, but a large group came and so they decided to open for dinner. A four-course dinner; beforehand a delicious ham that had matured for months in the ‘bora’ of the Vipava; particularly tasteful. But even more special was the red sparkling wine that came with it; never tasted before: but super tasty with the ham and afterwards two of these special bottles brought home. After the ham came ravioli: filled with ricotta and a hint of lavender; never before had such a delicious creamy, soft ravioli; with a delicious glass of white from oak barrel-aged rebula from the Brda region. As head we got veal cheek; a super tender piece of stew; with a fresh slightly cooled red wine from the Vipava valley. Finally a dessert of chocolate mousse with raspberries and we chose a white sparkling wine from the region to make it completely beautiful! 🥂 We enjoyed; ☺️ and our two young kids too; staying up late and playing on the square.

The family team have created a wonderful menu in a pretty hilltop castle courtyard, with fairy lights. There are a few tables inside overlooking the stunning, rolling countryside - a little warm on a summer evening so we chose the courtyard. The menu is all local and seasonal; we had the 6 course degustation. Highlights were silky pasta filled with local cheese and wild herbs, citrusy tartar, aged prosciutto which melted in the mouth, sea bass with samphire and peas, wild rabbit with peas and barley, risotto with local tomatoes and creamy desserts made with local fruits and yoghurt. All dishes were beautifully balanced and seasoned. The sommelier recommended two incredibly good wines - one honeyed with elderflower and peach overtones; the other drier and more citrusy. They were both delicious and incredibly reasonably priced. Front of house were very attentive, friendly and obviously passionate about the produce, cooking and entertaining. There were guests at smartly laid tables and also those enjoying a glass of wine at casual tables at the edge of the courtyard - all very relaxed in ambience. It was such a lovely evening.

Me and my friends have been dying at Bistro grad Štanjel on 24th Jun. We have been all very satisfied with the food, because the chef has really managed to combine different tastes together and the presentation of the food on the plate was also on a high level. I have given this restaurant a 5 star review also because the employees of the restaurant were so professional and they have explained for every plate what exactly we are eating + they were so kind. I would definitely suggest to anyone to come here to eat if he wants to taste so great local food ofcourse on a little higher price.

I had lunch during the 'week of restaurants' as we were lucky enough to get a table just a couple days before. The place was packed but the waiters were still nice and made sure we were served on time. We decided to choose a wine selection and desert on top of the 'regular' menu and it was a good choice. We had 9 course-lunch with 4 different wines in between. Each plate was perfectly prepared with the most amazing tastes combined in unique experience.

I had the best experience so far at Restaurant Week, better than anything I’ve encountered in previous editions. Everything was exceptional – from the ambiance, the friendly staff, to the incredibly delicious food. Each dish was perfectly crafted and truly outstanding. The only small downside was that I wasn’t asked about my drink preferences, nor did anyone suggest which wine would pair well with the food. Despite that, it was a fantastic experience, and I will definitely return.

The place doesn't feel or look local at all, expensive, pretentious, tasteless lounge music playlist. Feels like it lives of being instagrammable. I didn't see any people there who'd look like a local either, which is strange in my opinion.. It's sad to see unwillingness to bring local community and travellers together. Last time (10 years ago) i visited upper Štanjel and the castles restaurant, there were locals playing cards, their kids buying ice cream from the counter along with the tourists in the same courtyard. Food and drinks were affordable, place respected it's history and people living in both upper and lower village along with tourists and travellers. Different owners back then i assume. Best, EM

A great culinary afternoon spent in Grad Štanjel. We came for “teden restavracij” which happens every spring and fall in Slovenia. We chose a 5 course menu with a wine pairing done by sommelier Tine. We wished to explore the Carst region and the local producers so he poured us 12 different wines to taste. Every single course was amazing. The combination of tastes was above our expectations. We both left full but not too full, just enough…And my boyfriend eats alot 😄 The atmosphere inside and outside is very homely and cozy..as is the staff that works there, you can feel the family energy. We will come back for sure 💯

The bistro is situated in the heart of the historical village of Štanjel. we've visited for lunch and we could choose between 3, 4 and 5 course tasting menu. We've opted for the 4 one. The menu was based on local ingredients like local pork breed Krškopoljec prosciutto, aged in their own cellar, local cheese, home made beetroot gnocchi all spiced up with local herbs that can be found in the Karst region. They offer local (biodynamic) wines and the cherry on the top was their own homemade vermouth where again they used local herbs. If you are looking for smart, elegant but non pretentious food, you will enjoy this experience. The venue itself it seems elegant and modern, but on the same time it enhances the local traditional architecture. We've visited the place on a February Sunday but I can only imagine how beautiful can it be in a hot summer night, seating on the beautiful terrace. The bistro is a family run business and the family style warm hospitality can be felt on every step. For sure a place to return.

We came today afternoon for a glass of wine and plate of “pršut”. We got the wine in few minutes, for food they said to wait 15-20 minutes due to the “teden restavracij”. After 50 (!) minutes (withouth getting our order) we asked for the bill to pay to be able to leave. Unbeliveable is that the waiter didn’t even noticed we were not served at all. You will hardly find more confused and desorgnised team as this one today.

Their previous restaurant Kobjeglava was our favourite in the area, last year they moved to Grad Štanjel. Setting and interior is relaxed and warm place to be. Inside (restaurant part) they serve 4/6/8 course menus. Their ingredients are on really high level and they favour local suppliers of meat, cheese and veggies. Wine list is impressive, best advice is to leave their sommelier suggest wine pairing with each dish. Take a look at the food pictures, they speak for them selves. Kindness and professionalism of the owners and all serving staff is on the level of the best restaurants we visited. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

After kind of expecting a step-up from Kobjeglava, we were slightly disappointed. Yes, the event of "teden restavracij"in combination with roadblocks brought a bit of organisational chaoss, but the staff was professional, kind and attentive. Still, instead of charging tap water just name it cover charge. Unfortunately, the food did not meet the expectations. Below average bread made a disservice to the meal that in itself had potential but failed to deliver in ingredient harmony and proportions like drenching in cheese foam and raw vegetable sides. Cooking for masses should not leave the guest craving a digestive for the whole day.

Bistro Grad proved a perfect place for a lunch stop with the pretty landscape of the Vipava valley and Mount Nanos. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable of their dishes, the service was timely and well-paced and the value for money was great. The plates were very well presented. We had the pumpkin soup (delicious!), charcuterie and cheese board (also delicious!) and nocciola mousse and strudel cake for dessert (light and flavourful). Brilliant little restaurant!

A nice retreat from the drizzling winter rain. The bistro windows overlook the access to to the hill on which this picturesque medieval village is located but you need to order food in order to get access to these tables. Our drinks were ok, the place has been restored just right and if the weather cooperated it'd be perfect.

We went for a short visit to Stanjel and stayed for the whole evening. Very delicious menue with 4 courses (more courses available), very friendly staff, vine recommendations to each course possible, if you wish. We drank homemade lemonade though. All ingredients, vegetables, meat from different regions of Slovenia, also vegan/vegetarian alternatives possible. Highly but fair priced respecting the effort with each plate and the greetings from the kitchen. Hvala!
