Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Still open! Call 027 272 7082 to make a booking. The place is a little rundown, because of Covid, but has facilities like shower/toilet/kitchen/powersite. Madeline who runs this place is really nice! She gave us a lot of info/recommendations on our further trip.

Came to Whataroa for White Heron Tour, staying overnight in motel unit. Called in this pub both evenings we were here. Given a friendly welcome from locals and proprietors. Decent beer and varied food menu. Although we didn't eat here, we were given a free sample of whitebait patties which were absolutely delicious. Definitely worth a visit.

I didn't stay in the hotel (stayed in a cabin down the road) but ate my evening meal each of the 2 nights I was in Whataroa. Whitebait sandwich one night and a very large (and tasty) "Whataroa burger" the next. I chose to eat at the bar but there are tables indoors and tables outside too. Locals and tourists in equal numbers and a good variety of beer (and other drinks) available from the bar. A great place to chat and meet people.

This hotel is now closed. Has been for quite a few months, there is not much more to say about it because it is closed and I just wanted to make sure any travellers knew about it.

In short: bad service and rude waitress - she needs to learn some manners urgently. Waited over an hour for 2 burguers. At minute 40, I had to order a second beer and asked for the burgers... "being cooked" I was told. At minute 60 I asked again and was told I could get a refund if I wanted. When the burguers arrived not even one simple "I'm sorry for the delay" and then one of them was wrong, I ask to correct it and got an eye roll. When it was delivered again she didn't even look at us and the burguer was falling apart. I understand we're not the typical customers and we're just visiting but still, basic good education applies. Hopefully this waitress will read this and learn some manners. PS: the bar wasn't even full, far from it (9 other people were having dinner only)

My family and stayed in Whataroa and on a Thursday night, my mother and I popped into the Hotel at 6pm for dinner. We were ignored initially so I went up to the bar to ask if we could order dinner. The bar man's response was "I don't want to cook dinner tonight". I asked he would reconsider letting us order dinner and was told "No". He then went back to talking to the guy sitting up at the bar. We walked out.

If you are wanting to experience the true West Coast as experienced by the locals this is the place for you. Rural New Zealand at its most honest. Highly recommend

Small Hotel that provided a bit of fun during our stay in Whataroa with some very uninhibited locals dressed in strange and colourful clothing for a dart match. Friendly staff and patrons. Good night out..

On arrival we ordered a couple of drinks and were not impressed that the woman behind the bar used her fingers to put the ice into the drinks. This same woman then coughed all over the food whilst it was being served. The cleanliness of the hotel left much to be desired. Some small biting insect had a meal off me at the same time. I recommend if you are staying a night in the town that you bring food in with you. There are no shops open after 5pm and the Whataroa Hotel is the only place to eat.

Fair service but staff personal cleanliness left a bit to be desired. Hopefully waitress was not involved in the food preparation, food was okay but out of a freezer box. Mixed grill was substantial. Hotel was scruffy and unkempt, seemingly a workmans pub on the way home from work. Seat was broken and furniture had to be rearranged to allow four to sit comfortably. Left feeling itchy. Not to be recommended under present regime.

The pub serves meals in the evening and the food is fine and reasonably priced. This is not a first class restaurant but you won't find that in Whataroa. What you will find is pleasant, honest service and decent food and wine or beer.

A great country pub on the West Coast. We stayed the night. Food was great. We had both dinner and Breakfast while there. Rooms are basic but comfortable.
