Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Checked out the menu in advance and dropped in for dinner. Explained that we would love stay to enjoy a meal and have a few drinks. As we had a self contained motorhome asked if we could stay in their carpark afterwards (ie: to avoid...drink driving). The abrupt answer was NO. Such a shame. You are missing out on so much more business as we would easily have spent $100 on food and drinks. Another wonderful venue down the road showered us with hospitality and use of their carpark for the night. We were happy to spend our $ there. There are small marketing strategies you could use to increase your revenue if you gave it more thought, for example; a minimum spend in order for motorhomes to stay in your carpark? So much of an opportunity going to waste at Frontier disappointingly.More

Stopped in for an early dinner just aftwr 5pm with the menu holding more appeal for my wife (who doesn't eat red meat) than the other main eating option in town. The prices were ok at $50 + drinks, but the peas that came with...the bangers and mash I had seemed under done and the chips with the chicken burger also needed more time in the fryer to colour up and heat through properly. It was a busy place tonight and there only seemed to be one in the kitchen so may have been a little full on to get the timings right.More

Waited a long time just to be served. Garlic bread served- no plates, serviettes etc. Chicken wrapped in bacon on gratin potato- microwaved plastic chicken- totally tasteless in very salty bacon on fried grated potato- not pleasant!!

Big, empty restaurant. Maybe thirty tables but just three occupied. None of the other tables were clean, and evidence remained of a breakfast buffet even though this was lunchtime. Coronation Street blaring out from three or four TVs. We ordered fish and chips after being...told the fish was “Dory”; however it was likely frozen Hoki from a supermaket. Beer was sour. We tried the Hard Antler restaurant before this place, but it seemed horrible. This looked better only because there were fewer miserable patrons, but both are places to avoid. The DoC Information Centre in Haast is great: do not miss. But don’t arrive hungry and move quickly on.More

An entree of seafood chowder followed by white bait fritters and salad provided a real Southland experience for Aussie tourists from the sub tropics. Massive double sided stone fire place completes the excellent frontier vibe.

Market Fish of the day ($28) IMHO was no better than cheap supermarket frozen fish, chips were not cooked and the salad was half plate of lettuce, a tomato and a couple of slivers of carrot and beetroot dripping in a dressing on top. Partners...steak seemed to be missing part of the eye fillet (very small), chips and salad the same. Don’t let the bad food take away from the friendly service of the bar staff and chef.More

Good, well-presented food, excellent service, clean tables, spacious venue, vast mountain views from the enormous windows, classic NZ hotel from the '60s and 70s. Sense of occasion when eating there.

A bit hit and miss. The whitebait fritters were large and tasty, but the mayonnaise was horrendous and the lemon slices tiny. The venison and mushroom pie had one mushroom in it, and a thick layer of oil on top, but the venison itself was...tender and tasty.More

The staff were friendly. The food was amazing, had the whitebait salad and couldn't believe the size of the patties.... massive!! My husband got a different dish and wished he had the same as me.

Both my husband and I had the fish, mine grilled his battered, both ways were perfectly cooked, the chips were amazing and while the salad was very simple it was so fresh like it was straight from the garden.

This restaurant offers good old fashioned food with fantastic hospitality. The staff are very friendly and willing to help. Thank you Grace you were awesome even though you were flat out busy. We both ordered the rib eye steak. It was cooked to perfection.

Where do I even begin. First of all the water tasted very funny. Not sure if this is about the town water supply or something to do with their house recipe but it was definitely off. This should have been the first warning sign for...us but as we were quite desperate for some food we decided to stay. We then waited in a huge line which moved very slow. Then we tried to order some vegetarian options (which was a poor selection to begin with) and it turns out there was only 1/3 available!! They were also out of pasta, chicken and salad. We then waited an hour for three meals, by then it was nearly closing! When the meals arrived they were burnt patties on one side and paler than an albino on the other. We asked for aioli and were presented with a dismal amount of tartare. Close but no cigar. I feel sorry for the staff that work there as obviously they do not enjoy their job either.More

We visited twice. Our first meals of Venison and lamb were great. Our second meals after the rugby were ok pub food but not as good as the previous night. Possibly a big crowd didn't help. Nice country pub. Would recommend.
