Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When in Haast and you need a good value, great feed, go to The Hard Antler. Good atmosphere, with an amazing collection of antlers, plus some local history.

Not many places to eat here in Haast and a little worried as to what to expect. Really friendly place, all the servers were lovely and made you feel welcome. Yes there was quite a wait for the food but just grab yourself a table,...a couple of drinks and chill. The food was good quality comfort food. Had the venison medallions and venison sausages and really enjoyed both our meals. Make sure you don’t arrive too late as they stop serving early, around 8 but would imagine on a quite day it could be earlier. Would recommend.More

I had a fantastic dinner here on Feb 5th, 2024, during an AdventureSouth cycling tour from Christchurch. A bartender(I forgot to ask his name, a tall guy) came to me to convey a greeting because I came from Okinawa, Japan, and my family name was...Miyagi. He told me he liked The Karate Kid movie of 1984 in which the Karate sensei(master of martial arts) named Miyagi(from Okinawa) co-starred with protagonist(Ralph Macchio). I couldn't greet him back enough because I was exhausted after a long cycling. I really want to convey my gratitude to him for his courteous attitude. Thank you very much. There are more than 10,000 Miyagis in Okinwas where Miyagi is a pretty common name, though.More

West Coast character pub with reasonably good pub food. I did try lots of whitebait and it was very good. The Menu on tripadviser is old and inaccurate especially the prices.

We went for Dinner at hard antler for dinner and in the past it was great. We waited 53 minutes and the food wasn't great and would not go again

What a welcoming and super helpful experience! The bar manager(?) was really kind, friendly and accommodating. Food was a little late in arriving, but apologies and offer of another drink were offered. After the unhelpful and non-customer service focussed experience by another venue "down the...road" we were so pleased we ended up here.More

A welcoming place. We grabbed seats at the “local’s table” and had great conversations and probably the best venison loin I’ve ever eaten. Nice local beer on tap, decor appropriate to the pub’s name and an overall fine experience. Recommended.

This was a real pity because the staff were so inviting and friendly, and I just loved the atmosphere. We both ordered salt and pepper squid meals, and at first were impressed with the flavor but ohhh goodness it was so rubbery I’ve never had...squid that badly over cooked. It was like beef jerky. The chips were some of the best chips I’ve had at a pub, the seasoning was yummo. And the seasoning on the squid was also tasty, so I still ate it. Just sad about the texture.More

Whilst passing through the little town of Haast, our rumbly tummies brought us to call on the homely restaurant and bar, The Hard Antler. It overlooks Haast Heli hence we were treated to the sight of helicopters taking off and landing whilst enjoying our meal....Though it was pretty late when we visited, we still managed to get a bowl of creamy and piping hot Soup of the day which was accompanied by crusty and buttery garlic bread (NZD 12). We then paired this with a Seafood Basket (NZD 35) which was overflowing with crumbled crunchy prawns fried to a perfect golden brown. These were joined with scallops, mussels, squid rings, battered fish and crunchy crab sticks with freshly fried chips which arrived with sweet chilli sauce as dipping sauce. The entire platter was pretty substantial and perfect to share between two especially with a hot comforting soup to warm our souls. Good stop for lunch en route from Fox Glacier to Wanaka along the West Coast. This is an interesting place with so many antlers hanging from the ceiling. Food was very good. I had the tuna cooked to perfection and so tasty. My husband had...the whitebait pattie which was the special of the day. Both were served with delicious salads. It is a basic pub with character and good food, beer and wine. A useful stop.More

On my way from Franz Josef / Fox to Queenstown, I stopped at Haast township After having talked to a local, The Hard Antler was highly recommended to me, being described to be as the get together place in town I decided to give it...a shot, and upon entering I immediately felt it was indeed the best place in town, with a very local vibe, through the decoration and people I could feel the friendly vibe going around, it was obvious most people patrons were regulars, but I also felt welcome as a stranger They offer for and drinks, but also have TV screens playing sports, billard, darts... I was well hungry, noticed their venison burgers, wasn't sure which one to choose, and asked for recommendation, and hence went for the hard antler version. It was super super yummy and filling (it included 2 meat patties, and it came with plenty of fries) Nathan at the bar was super friendly, even helping me befriend locals and get a place to stay Oh and they have lots of touristic leaflets at the entrance Indeed a must if you're staying in town, but also highly recommended if you were driving through Haast PS: kitchen usually closes around 8, but as a bar it stays open longer, depending of people inMore
