Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We thoroughly enjoyed our fish& chips tonight. Light & crispy with the fish freshly battered & cooked to perfection. Well done to the lovely young cook.

There aren't to many places for lunch in Haast. We drove in near to where this place was then drove out and down to the tourist information center a little down the road to ask where to have lunch. They suggested this place, the "Grumpy...Cow Cafe". We drove back to the place and went in. Its in the local supermarket. You have a good selection for food for take out or eat in at the little tables inside. 3 of us had the burgers and one had a toastie. The burger patties were par-cooked but still were a nice tasting patty. The burgers were good. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly as we were the only ones in there. I would go back.More

... avoid this place if you can.. if you look like a tourist be sure they'll charged a wopping 25% more and unfriendly service. Back in February, 2 normal size latte coffee t/away ended up NZ$14 (he ran the cash machine 4 times until it...came up max. price ) and waited 》10 minutes . While I was waiting for my coffee a local came in asked for the same thing - latte coffee t/a she paid NZ$5, Terrible policy! If you do need to buy coffee ask for the price first.More

Stopped here for a quick bite on a drive from Franz Josef and Wanaka. Food was good, I had a pie and my wife had a sandwich. Decent food reasonably priced. However we will remember the place more apart from the food. My wife left...her handbag in this restaurant and we didn’t discover this until hours later in Wanaka. We phoned the restaurant and they assured us they had the bag and would arrange for it to be sent to Wanaka by courier the next day. We didn’t expect this and are extremely grateful as it contained cash and cards and would have been a big issue to have lost it. We got in contact with the courier lady, who we met the next day. She was a very nice friendly lady and had a lovely good willed nature. We are extremely appreciative to the courier and also the staff of the grumpy cow for helping us out so much on our holidayMore

Da Wandering Wabbits pulled into Haast village (pop.250) late one day, having come through the Haast Pass to reach the South Island's West coast. We tried our luck at the Grumpy Cow Cafe: a basic takeaway with some seating space; cabinet food and deep-fry; part...of the local grocery store. The store closes at 7pm and shuts its kitchen an hour earlier...but bless em! They could see we were hungry and tired, and went out of their way to feed us. Talk about Coaster Hospitality! Some good coffee, a seafood basket and a large plate of fish and chips hit the spot! Considering how isolated Haast is, the prices were the same as elsewhere. We really appreciated the hospitality when we're sure you really wanted to close up for the evening. We'll drop in again next time we're through...More

I found all my resupply here except fresh vegetables. It's of course bit pricey but that is expected in a remote place as Haast. The fish was nice that I ate with coffee.

Take a short break at a small town Haast, we saw a sign Grumpy Cow Cafe on the ute parked on the main road, and give a try. The fish n chip was OK, not the best in NZ but OK for us and also...the coffee was good. The shop is inside of the bigger building which is actually a small mini market with plenty of stuff available, including ice cream.More

It was a quick stop for lunch and this cafe was the only place that we could find so we did not expect much. The fish and chips were just average. They did not refill the tartar sauce so we had it with tomato sauce...only. Surprisingly, the coffee was really good. It was creamy and very tasty. Anyway, the staff was cold and indifferent as if someone forced him to work there. If you have other alternatives, I suggest you skip this place to find a better one.More

Well apart from the poor and arrogant service we received the fish n chips were given to us in brown paper bags with pretty much all the oil nearly breaking the bag what happened to wrapping a two person meal in newspaper. The fish was...as small as your palm, the chips were tasteless especially for the price. We love our kiwi fish n chips and sadly this (grocery store) puts good kiwi fish n chips to shame. Probably best stick to selling groceries. Try it if you dare maybe we just got them on a really really bad day.More

Coffee wasn't very good. I asked for boiling hot, but it was only just hot! Sandwich was dry. There isn't much choice for lunches in Haast.

We stopped for breakfast, and left happy with full bellies. We're vegetarians, and were pleased to see they offered more than just eggs and toast (i.e. roasted tomatoes and potatoes). Coffee was good too. I would stop here again for sure!
