Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The fish was lovely and fresh but the price was a bit over the top. $16.90 for a piece of blue cod!!!!

Went for lunch on a Saturday. We were blown away by the range of fish on offer. We had a variety, but I'll be blowed if I can remember what was what. They were all great.

We stop here often when going through Hampden, and the only time we’re disappointed is when we come through after hours and they’re closed! Beautiful fresh seafood, and very good chips at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

We always try to pass through Hampden when the fish n chip shop is open so we can get a piece of crumbed elephant fish. Over the years we tied paua and whitebait patties as well as other fish and it is great as well....But the good old crumbed elephant fish is still our favorite...More

Honestly, they are too rushed and don't drain the fish in chips so they are super oiky. I wasn't bothered with the service either, went out of the way to be a bit rude in what should have been a pretty quick interaction. Keep going...to moderateMore

We are very experienced in the realm of fish and chip procurement, having taste -tested out way the length and breadth of the great NZ. These fish and chips were - without a word of a lie, and no exaggeration - the best fish and...chips we have ever eaten! Thanks to the team at the chippie who made sure our freshly cooked morsels were so tasty, we cannot tell you how nice it was to stop in a small town and get such a wonderful feed. Keep up the good work!More

We stopped to buy some chips on our way through, never been there before. We weren’t sure of the portion size... should we buy two lots or not? So we asked Two questions and the guy behind the counter replied ‘if you ask anymore stupid...questions, I’ll punch your bloody nose in’! Is that normal behaviour when you enter a shop to purchase anything? I commented that he seemed to tell it how it was... to which he replied that he didn’t care, that’s why he said what he did... the chips weren’t improved by the unpleasant experience! Behaviour like that does not do New Zealand proud... If you are in the service industry then good manners, a smile and patience are necessary qualities... If that’s too hard then I’d say it’s not an industry you should be in!More

Ordered Blue Cod and chips for 4 people. The shop was busy but we didn't have to wait long. Ate them outside in the sunny seating area. Friendly service, would definitely eat there again.

Best blue cod in NZ! With a crispy crumb coating and moist white flesh this fresh, cooked while you wait blue cod is the best deep fried fish I’ve ever eaten. Located in Hampden on the main road as you drive through town, it is...definitely worth stopping in no matter what time of day. Don’t expect to see a Lockies sign tho, instead just look for the blue house with sign saying World Famous Blue Cod.More

Whenever I travel between Chch & Dunedin, I stop for battered blue cod & chips here. They are the absolute best in NZ, & I don't care how much they cost. From "Thelma & Louise"!
