My dining experience at Hooked, found along the idyllic shorefront of Marahau, was one of the highlights of my trip around the South Island. This cafe/restaurant would rival many of the best restaurants in major cities. Following several visits to Hooked over the week I was in Marahau it’s impossible to choose a favourite main from the menu, but from the starters, the bao buns surpass any I’ve had previously, and the chicken nibbles were coated with the most amazing combination of flavours. Along with the ever popular chips my children kept wanting to come back for more. From the main menu, one of my favourites would have to be the seafood spaghetti, where I ordered more bread so as not to waste any of the delicious sauce. Keeping my friends away from it was the hard part! The drinks menu included wines which focused on quality over your usual standard selection, and I enjoyed the best berry cider I have ever tasted. Happy (two) Hour was a must each night. Finally, I must mention the amazing cheese scones the size of pancakes, along with the best flat white coffee I’d had from the region. Hooked has a casual, relaxing al fresco dining feel, yet is run by polite, friendly and professional staff, some of whom I believe have worked there for some years. I am hooked on Hooked, and hope to get back there one day. Marahau in general is a hidden treasure and closest gateway to the Abel Tasman and all water activities.

We ate here twice for dinner after our long walks in the beautiful Abel Tasman national park. ( Had tried another local cafe that wasn’t half as good as Hooked) The food was healthy and very tasty. We loved the squid and chicken bites for sharing starters, good portion size and the pork and beef mains were perfectly cooked with fresh vegetables. My mum really enjoyed the fish and chips too. The honeycomb ice cream and profiteroles were a really yummy on one of our nights ! All the girls were super friendly and efficient especially Amelie, Mae, Camille and Sky. Definitely recommend! Many thanks. Tip - you can book a table online, as very busy.

This is probably the best restaurant in the Abel Tasman area. You cannot miss lt. Food is really really good and fresh, you eat while enjoying ocean views and the service is great. I came 2 nights in a row! Make sure you make reservations because it gets packed!

We ate here both nights of our stay. The food is fine but overpriced. If Hooked want to charge $30 for a spaghetti dish, the chef might make the spaghetti. It looked and tasted like cheap packet dried stuff. The last sitting is at 6.30pm and the restaurant closes at about 8pm. I felt a bit rushed to eat and leave. $140 for two, no time to just relax and enjoy the food or the place.

This restaurant was recommended to us by someone from Nelson and it was really very disappointing, We were seated out the front which could have been nice with a nice outlook except we were seated next to noisy kids ++ who were talking/yelling/singing at the top of their voices with parents who were oblivious to how it was affecting other diners- not the restaurant's fault but not a great start. The menu not very exciting at all and really wasn't any much different to a pub menu really. We ordered ceviche which I have had many times and like to have with a large squeeze of lemon so asked for lemon when ordering it. It arrived without it, so reminded the waitress who came back with 2 small slices you would put in a drink- not at all squeezable, so asked for a proper wedge. This was met with a reaction like I was asking for something special or expensive. 1 wedge arrived My husband asked for wasabi and he was looked at as if he was talking a different language and then told 'no' they did not have any. The ceviche arrived and unfortunately, the fresh herbs mentioned in the description in the menu was coriander which my husband cannot eat. Lucky for me because the serving was very small with fish cut into very tiny pieces and not big enough to share anyway. Something like coriander should be specified in the description as it is so polarising and many people do not like it. The squid we ordered was just ok. The 'special coating' was pretty underwhelming really. The mayonnaise that accompanies it was also on the small side and we had to ask for more. Not enough provided for the amount of squid. The Bao buns with lamb were ok. The buns texture was as if they had been over steamed, not light and fluffy, a bit dense (I often use these so had a fair idea how they should be) The best part of the meal was the iced coffee at the end which came with ice cream and cream- very tasty. The whole experience was underwhelming, with very average food, served by wait staff who seemed not very friendly and flustered and reacted to requests like we were asking for the world when we had been told it was excellent. Very disappointing.

We loved this waterfront restaurant... The staff in our lodge had recommended us to go there and had arranged for dinner reservation. This is a breezy place - nautical deco, wonderful view, lovely staff AND delicious meals. It was packed when we arrived at 6.30 pm on the first evening but a nice table was ready for us. We ordered artisan bread with a beetroot dip and fish and chips with slaw plus (ignoring the fish's beer batter) a bottle of local Pinot Noir. Our waitress from Marseille was a gem - quick, attentive and witty. And the tasty food made us come back a second time. This time we had the artisan bread again plus the oka (ceviche) followed by seafood spaghetti and a burger - with the Pinot Noir again. We enjoyed everything. No wonder that we were not the only guests from the lodge...

Dropped in to Hooked after an amble up the Abel Tasman track - needed some rest and food. This was perfect. Sat outside in the shade, watching the world walk or jog by, had perfect tea and the most amazing cheese scone ever - maybe the sea air influenced my taste buds but I would travel across the globe for another scone like that!! Friendly staff and quick service.

Was quite worried at first impression of this place as we waited a while to be seen by someone to get a table, but following that we had the opposite experience and everything was amazing. Staff very attentive and helpful and the food was great. My partner is vegan and they had multiple options which we could try/share and they were all delicious. Highly recommend

We live 45 minutes drive away and often make the trip to Marahau just to eat at this amazing cafe. Is often really busy but the service is great, the food is quick to arrive and tastes delicious. We had the salt and pepper squid, crispy chicken nibbles, bao buns and the pork ribs special at our table today and all was demolished quickly with lots of mmmms and ahhhs. Throughly recommend this awesome wee cafe in beautiful Marahau.

Hooked is a large restaurant with extensive seating inside and outside - which is great. And as we dropped in without a booking, it meant we were able to get a table. The views are lovely but do remember to bring insect repellent. Only one of us ordered a meal, a fish burger - and sadly the crumbed fish fillet was beyond over cooked. The crumb coating was also too salty. Oh well 😕. Dessert was nice if not a bit fussy in the plating...$71 for a glass of beer a mocktail, fish burger and two cheesecakes. I'd call it an average experience, nothing special, which is a shame given the idyllic setting.

This is opposite the beach and the fresh breeze which blows constantly keeps the air temperature under control. We ate lunch outside and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and vibe of the place. My cerviche was freshly made and nicely tangy with lime cutting into the raw fish and coconut milk. My companion’s soup was tasty too and we enjoyed a couple of local sodas.

Arrived to all the tables with reserved signs even though most of them were empty. Food was tasty and arrived fast. Asked at the end if we could sit on another table that wasn’t reserved to continue having drinks in the sun and was told no as all the tables in the sun were reserved. Paid 30seconds later to over hear the lady at the desk saying that they had tables in the sun out of the wind free. Feel like our dress code didn’t meet standards as we were quickly shuffled out. Understandable that every restaurant it trying to make the most out of their customers but sad and uncomfortable when it was as transparent as this place. Hope this is seen and encourages less judgemental attitudes as they have a great view and great food.

Thank you for your feedback. Please accept our apologies. We are sincerely sorry you felt this way. We do have many reservations on an evening hence all the reservation signs. We certainly do not have a dress code, being located in the waterfront our guests are often half dressed with sandy bare feet.

We visited twice on way in and out of the National Park (in fact on the way out we drove to Kaiteriteri and it was so busy that we came straight back again). Good service, excellent food, lovely ambience, some really nice items on menu and good attention to detail. Kahurangi Rose was delicious as was the berry cider in lovely cold glass mugs. Would definitely return and recommend.

Having just finished a 5 day kayaking trip, me and a friend had wanted a lovely chill REFRESHING beverage. Nothing too complicated or difficult one would think. Upon entering this ‘establishment,’ we were greeted by a staff member who would rather continue her job than even look our way. Immediately the vibes were off. When we were seated, it took maybe 10 minutes for someone to even come to our table, which was interesting considering a blonde chick would regularly come outside and peruse the outdoors with no regard to our table....or anyone else’s for that matter. The staff looked like they didn’t give a rats ass about their job which is fair because neither would I if I worked at a place such as yours. Giving you guys the benefit of the doubt, we waited in anticipation for our refreshing drinks. But no, not to be. We were severely confused as to the drinks that sat before us. An Ice tea is a simple beverage that one shouldn’t be able to stuff up. How wrong we were. First of all, it arrived on a tray that I would expect to be served whilst laying in a hospital bed. Second, who on earth thought it was a good idea to deconstruct a deconstructable drink??? It’s not hipster, it’s absurd. I had to pour my own syrup?????? The drink, to put it politely could only be described as left over, petrol station ice block liquid. What kind of ice tea is neon pink? This was not what I was expecting. I am just flabbergasted to this level of idiocy. However the beer was lovely. 4.5 stars? More like no stars.

Not much open around Abel Tasman in May so we were thrilled to find Hooked. Even though they were out of a lot of items in the menu, the service and the atmosphere more than made up for the menu shortfall. I had the mushroom risotto which was one of the best; my husband had the generous portion of ribs which were charred to perfection. The restaurant is nicely decorated with an attention to detail - look around at the interesting items on the walls. The staff were friendly, making an excellent dessert recommendation - the banana, passion fruit cake - so delicious. We hope to visit again soon.
