About
Passion. It is quite often impossible to summarise the experience created within a restaurant with just one word. Passion. Passion to produce the best food possible with the freshest and finest ingredients we can scour the world to find. Passion to strive to be the best. Passion to ensure that our customers remember. Passion to cater for people from all walks of life and give them a lasting memory of our restaurant. We're not going to tell you about how we have stunning river views with outdoor dining set in a 13th Century cellar conversion. We're not going to bore you with how difficult we are to find. We want you to come here, seek us out, walk down those narrow steps, be surprised by what

Went here to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. Outside table with lovely glimpses of river wear. Highly knowledgeable waitresses and excellent wine recommendation. The food was absolutely superb and lovely anniversary surprise too from them. Faultless and a very memorable meal. Whatever you do, don’t...miss this superb restaurant-it’s great value too!More

Lovely quirky restaurant with nice Devore and friendly efficient staff. The food was good and delicious - but I don’t expect to pay London prices in the North East of England !!

What an amazing restaurant! This is a proper hidden jem which serves fantastic food, one of those places that you wished they were where you live. I had goat cheese and melon for starter and Jerusalem artichokes risotto with black truffle. My husband had scotch...eggs for starter and seabass for main. Everything was cooked with a twist but cooked to perfection. The prices are actually very reasonable for those high standards they have. Really our compliments to the chef(s)!More

As first time visitors to the city we stumbled upon this restaurant by accident. We completely ignored the notice outside that stated diners would only be accommodated if they’d booked & beseeched the staff to squeeze us in , which they kindly did. Well, thank...heavens they did. How this place doesn’t have a Michelin star is beyond me. The staff were quietly competent, efficient and helpful. The food was startling in its magnificence. Each course was a vision to behold and each mouthful was an intense explosion of flavours. The restaurant has a delightful ambiance; the surroundings are quirky & quaint. Huge thanks to the delightful Alex who went above & beyond to make our evening extra special. She showed immense passion for the place & was really knowledgeable about the food & wine. Would we return? Hell yes , in a heartbeat!!!!More

Visited today for Sunday lunch with a friend, and really enjoyed everything! Staff were great, food was fantastic and such good value. Our server was Eve who was polite and attentive. I had watermelon, trout and espresso dessert and my friend had watermelon, chicken dinner...(which was huge) and fondant which she said was delicious. Would definitely recommend!More

Disappointing meal, but staff kind enough to offer discount off main meals. We had as a party of 4 meals that had undercooked dauphinoise, fondant potato and burned onion rings. Plus due to a party we never got to see the cellar area. Hey ho,...glad we went, staff were lovely, wine was good xxMore

We chose this restaurant because of the good reviews and we liked the rather posh setting. The service was excellent and I was almost impressed by the way in which the GF menu tells you what you can't have, which turns out to be almost...everything! The Flat White Kitchen does something similar but with the opposite effect - you end up being able to have almost everything - clearly a better outcome for me! The wine was good - a very crisp Italian Pinot Grigio. The ambiance is tricky - it is quite spartan and clearly a question of taste - we thought it was almost there, but perhaps something colourful and live would have helped to break it, as there are some very nice touches, like the hands and the little people on the light fittings. The food...excellent ingredients, food well prepared, good use of natural flavours and herbs, but somehow it just didn't quite work - it was almost there...the balance of flavours was a little out. One of our favourite UK restaurants is Skosh in York. The chef and their team are magicians when it comes to flavour and creativity. The chef at The Cellar Door is clearly very capable, but for us there was no magic. It was so close, but we wouldn't go back. Of our 6 nights dining out in Durham, it turned out to be the most underwhelming. I suspect we may have expected too much.More

So we booked The Cellar Door in Durham for my Birthday, we were greeted and seated by very polite staff, drinks served and food ordered I complimented the beautiful wine glasses , our waitress asked if I would like to know what they were called...and brought the details, our starters, mains and desserts were faultless, absolutely delicious and presented beautifully, all served with just the right amount of time between courses in a lovely setting, I can not fault this place at all, thank you to the wonderful staff for a delightful evening , we will definitely return.More

They have tables outside overlooking the river but it would all depend on the weather, I’m sure they will have “heaters”

Have just seen this question - I'd say more for an adult taste than a child's unless very cosmopolitan. No judgment intended, but if you have to ask for your child, the answer's probably 'no'. Not that I'm sure they wouldn't... More
