I was in Greece for the first time in my life and wanted to try an authentic souvlaki. The hotel recommended this place. The souvlaki was decent. It did not make me jump up and down with joy but it was proper good food. I...also had a Greek salad that was very good. The wine was bad but I only ordered cheap wine anyway. I guess because of Spain I am used to much better cheap wine. Maybe cheap wine is supposed to be bad in Greece? There was one thing I did not like. The restaurant had different prices for people who ate there and who ordered take away. Despite that fact the waiter started to insist that I had to give him extra money. This felt disturbing because: A. I had intended to leave him a tip anyway; B. This was the first time in my life I had this situation and I have travelled in many countries. A waiter begging for extra money and then getting too familiar with his "Where are you from?" seemed very rude to me. But maybe such manners are acceptable in Greece. I would not know.More

This restaurant was recommended to us by an acquaintance from Athens. It is in a pretty high traffic area - maybe considered touristy - so I was a little skeptical. This is a larger, high volume, restaurant and as expected the service was efficient but...not over the top by any means. We were able to order food and drinks in a timely manner. When the food arrived we absolutely smashed it. We have souvlaki and I believe some fries (chips). Great quality, arrived hot, the plate didn’t stand a chance. This place seems to have found a good recipe of great location and also delivers a great product. When it was time to leave we were also able to pay in a timely manner with a courteous server. This wasn’t life changing but if in the area with so many other options this is a good one.More

O Thanasis is a popular, local Greek restaurant in a lively area, just off Monastiraki Square. It’s casual and fun and we had a great lunch here. Would definitely go back. We started with the saganaki, the spicy peppers and a Greek salad, then ordered...platters of souvlaki skewers of grilled meat which was served with warm pita bread, tzatziki, onions, and tomatoes. Food was great but this was way too much for two people as the servings are very generous. The Greek salad was one of the best we had. It was large serving with fresh salad topped by a big, creamy slab of feta and drizzled with olive oil, oregano and capers. We sat outside which was crowded but had lots of lively atmosphere. The restaurant was constantly busy but service was quick and they were very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed it a lot. Prices were very reasonable (especially considering the serving size). Most mains ranged around the €9 - €12 mark. We didn’t book ahead and walked in off the street. It was just the two of us so they were able to find us a table almost straight away. O Thanasis is open until very late and doesn’t close during the day which is incredibly convenient.More

After a morning of walking around Monastiraki, we settled into O’Thanasis for a quick lunch. We both ordered the Pork Gyro, which is stuffed full of fries, tzatziki, tomato, purple onion, and lettuce. It was so good and really hit the spot. It’s just the...perfect size for a quick lunch. If you skipped breakfast, I could see ordering 2 but I was very satisfied. The price was so fair too - that same gyro would’ve cost 2x in NYC.More

This is an interesting place. Definitely in the tourist area and crazy busy at times(I went twice) but the food is great. I first came across O Thanasis, in a Rick Steve’s review. The service can be a bit abrupt/pushy/transactional but the food is worth...it. The prices are decent and the portions are a good size. I wasn’t hungry after. Try to get a table towards the back a bit, so you aren’t right on the road/path and can people watch a little longer. I live in a city with a large Greek population and have eaten chicken souvlaki many many times. This was far the best I have ever had which, frankly shocked me(given the location). You don’t expect it. But the hands down star was the pita bread. It was like little puffy clouds. In lieu of desert, I finished every last piece of pita(with tzatziki of course). Opa!More

This is the place in Athens to eat souvlaki and yiaourtlou (kebab with yoghurt spread). Souvlaki is the fast food of Greece but the quality here is very good. I donot consider a visit in Athens complete unless we have souvlaki at Thanasis. And this...time again the place did not disappoint. Succulent souvlaki. Lots of outdoor space . I donot think a reservation is required.More

Terrible food.they make the kebabs taste ok with spices and artificial tastes, however the meat is of lowest quality probably expired minced meats from local butchers. Will definitely give you a bad stomach. The fries too, never fresh,pre-frozen variety cooked in overused veg oil. Even the...tomatoes and onions are tasteless factory grown..don't be fooled This is a rip off, present nicely. Not at all representing good Greek foodMore

Came for a late dinner at almost 11pm. This restaurant is by far the most popular on the street. Servings are generous and pricing fair. Tried the pork souvlaki and the Thanasis kebab. Found the pork a little dry/tough, but the kebab (skewers of lamb/beef...mince) was quite tender and very enjoyable. The food pared well with a bottle of retsina. Would definitely come back again if looking for a kebab late night around Monastraki Square.More

The hunt is over, undoubtedly the best Souvalaki and yeros in Athens. Super service and uncomplicated! Also the perfect place to watch the passing parade!

Have been here a few times many years ago and always have had good experiences. Brought new friends to eat here - food was great (although the gyro was a bit dry so we asked for more tzatziki). Staff were very busy so not as...attentive as one would like. Atmosphere was great as it is in the bustling heart of Athens. Would definitely return as it is very close to my heart ❤️More

The best food we had in not just Athens, but on our whole trip to Greece. If you like a fancy dinner, just stop here for lunch, it’s more of a casual place. We dined on a Saturday night and there were more locals than...tourists, which to me says a lot. To address other reviews, yes the service is not the most attentive, and the street is a mad house around you - but as soon as you bite in whatever you order - that just doesn’t matter! As well as being the most delicious food we had it was also the cheapest. I highly recommend making this a must do on your trip.More

Have been coming to this place for years, but will no longer recommend. The kebab was too fatty and the tzatziki was extra money for the kebab plate. We had much better food at many other locations all across Greece and Athens. Even though O...Thanasis has been making tons of money hand over fist for well over 20 years, the bathrooms were filthy and falling apart. Carboard on the floor of the women's restroom, broken fixtures, tiles, etc.. When I complained, an employee said they were so busy they didn't have time to clean it or fix anything. Give me a break! Labor is so cheap in Greece that can not be used as an excuse..especially when so many managers/owners(?) were standing around, doing nothing. Re-model your bathrooms for 1000 euro and hire a full time cleaner for 25 euro/day!More

We decided to have dinner here on our last night in Athens as we had a busy day and it was in walking distance from the hotel. The place is very popular and the staff are friendly with a good atmosphere and selection of Greek...dishes. We both had the chicken souvaliki with a Greek salad to start. The portions are big enough that we struggle to finish our plates. Very good quality and right on the square of monisterakiMore

Yes you can. You should ask for souvlaki with pita. Not a whole plate. It's by pieces. For example 3 kebab on pita not a plate of kebab.!!!

AT THANASSIS ONE ORDERS THE LAMB KEBABS! They never served Gyros until recently, when they added it for some tourists asking for it. Lamb kebab is the real thing here.
