I recommend the place for anyone who wants to discover local cuisine on a low budget (Greek salad, soulvaki).
The terrace is large. We enjoy the atmosphere of the neighborhood without being on top of each other. The service is fast. The menu is simple and complete with photos of the dishes, which helps a lot if you're not good at English.
Please note, not all dishes on the menu are available and this is not indicated.
Furthermore, the servers seem in a huge hurry even if the restaurant is not full and do not say hello, smile or kindness if you struggle to make yourself understood.
We will return there for the cuisine and the atmosphere because we are not susceptible.

Go where they recommend you say, eat where the locals eat they say!! . This amazing restaurant enticed me back for dinner after a lovely lunch it was that good. An amazing; and I mean amazing; lamb kebab and a large beer for €16 with no pressure to vacate your table just soaking up the locals

We went to O Thanasis, very busy and the waiters were not always as attentive.
We ordered two gyros, one chicken and the other pork. A Greek salad and a plate of tzatziki.
They were quite swift in bringing our food.
The Greek salad tasted lovely and tzatziki too 5/5. The gyros came, the chips inside were cold and the meat was warm 3.5/5.
Overall a 4/5 was given.
Wouldn’t really rush to go there again.

The waiter was a little pushy and asked us to order quickly. He suggested what we should order and encouraged additional items. My husband ordered beef souvlaki but was given pork (which was €3 cheaper but not reflected on the bill), however it was delicious so we didn't request a change. I ordered the Thanasis kebab which was apparently "famous". It was tasty but spongy in texture and quite fatty. We were given a shot of spirit to drink quickly as though this was a cheeky extra from our waiter. The total bill was around €38. The waiter told us he gave us a pitta with our tzaziki starter and the alcohol shots for free and then suggested we pay €45 including tip. Overall the food was mostly good but I was left with the aftertaste of being exploited as a tourist.

O Thanasis is a popular, local Greek restaurant in a lively area, just off Monastiraki Square.
It’s casual and fun and we had a great lunch here. Would definitely go back.
We started with the saganaki, the spicy peppers and a Greek salad, then ordered platters of souvlaki skewers of grilled meat which was served with warm pita bread, tzatziki, onions, and tomatoes. Food was great but this was way too much for two people as the servings are very generous.
The Greek salad was one of the best we had. It was large serving with fresh salad topped by a big, creamy slab of feta and drizzled with olive oil, oregano and capers.
We sat outside which was crowded but had lots of lively atmosphere. The restaurant was constantly busy but service was quick and they were very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed it a lot.
Prices were very reasonable (especially considering the serving size). Most mains ranged around the €9 - €12 mark.
We didn’t book ahead and walked in off the street. It was just the two of us so they were able to find us a table almost straight away.
O Thanasis is open until very late and doesn’t close during the day which is incredibly convenient.

Have been coming to this place for years, but will no longer recommend. The kebab was too fatty and the tzatziki was extra money for the kebab plate. We had much better food at many other locations all across Greece and Athens. Even though O Thanasis has been making tons of money hand over fist for well over 20 years, the bathrooms were filthy and falling apart. Carboard on the floor of the women's restroom, broken fixtures, tiles, etc.. When I complained, an employee said they were so busy they didn't have time to clean it or fix anything. Give me a break! Labor is so cheap in Greece that can not be used as an excuse..especially when so many managers/owners(?) were standing around, doing nothing. Re-model your bathrooms for 1000 euro and hire a full time cleaner for 25 euro/day!

We visited tonight after a recommendation from our Greek friends. He is actually called Thanasis. We tried to engage the waiter in relation to this and he was very dismissive.
We went out of our way to find the restaurant and were very excited but then disappointed.
It is busy so I can understand the rushed service.
I wanted a pita wrap and was told what I wanted was Chicken Souvlaki . It wasn’t and I later found the pita wraps on the menu. €14 for the Souvlaki and €3.80 for what I actually wanted! Hmmmmm! Up selling at its best there! But not good from a customer perspective!
I ordered a Mythos, I actually wanted draft, didn’t get asked just bought a bottle with a water glass.
Other people had the nice Mythos glasses. Again rushed and dismissive!
The food is delicious but I felt a bit patronised by the Waiter and also saw him do similar to a few other diners. We paid and didn’t leave a tip and were asked if we were happy with the service. My husband said yes as he didn’t want to cause a fuss. I wasn’t happy with the service at all. It was a real shame as the food was delicious even though it wasn’t what I wanted so some was wasted.
It is a massive restaurant with three different frontages so pick the right one and not Mr Sullen Waiter and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

It is always a very crowded place located on the corner of Monastìraki Square. The tables are arranged almost in the middle of the bustle of a noisy crowd, but... that's just the beauty!
Other tables are located inside a couple of indoor rooms. In short, it is the typical Greek tavern; whitewashed walls, blue shutters and straw chairs! From the menu you can choose various dishes, mainly meat, or (as in the case) a quick snack made of "pita" and the best there is of gyros.
A pita with two gyros (so, as hungry impunity we jumped on the double version). An ice water we paid in two a bill well below € 20. The meat was really very good, with all the various toppings and their tzaziki which was phenomenal. Recommendation!

The waiter unacceptable !! He came to the table to take an order and was looking at the passers-by when we ordered the wraps, we also asked for a wrap with chicken and he said in a tone: there is no such thing here!!! he was talking on his mobile and when we called him to pay he gave us 5.50 change and our 50 minutes he threw it on our table making a gel... of course no thanks or anything... the food was nice...

This place provided a beautiful atmosphere for all 6 of us adults to enjoy our first meal in Greece. The food was delicious, particularly the Tzatziki with the classic pita bread and souvlaki. The price was fair considering the quality of the food, the lovely location of the restaurant, and the friendliness of the staff. We would go back!

Incredibly busy restaurant but they have so many tables it’s rare to not get one. Service is fast and efficient. We ate here 4 times in the 10 days we were in Athens. The yoghurt kebab is absolutely delicious and paired with a greek salad makes a fairly cheap meal for 2. Will be my first stop anytime I return to Athens.

We ate here on our first night of a 3 day break in Athens, the service was good despite being very busy and a meal for 4 with drinks was around 60 euro. We went back on 2 further occasions for quick snacks (chicken gyro wraps) which for 4 and drinks cost around 25 euro and they were amazing. Definitely recommended for good food, quick service and good prices.

I'm a Brazilian tourism agent and I'm in Athens for the fourth time. I travel with senior groups and I was recommended the restaurant because it was among the 150 most legendary in the world. Among the 150 nominees, I know more than 10, but I certainly wouldn't go back or recommend the restaurant O Thanasis, Athens, not even to my worst enemy. I sat at the table with a friend and we ordered two Mythos draft beers. A waiter, whose name unfortunately I don't know, after the two beers had been served, approached us with great rudeness, saying that we could only sit down to eat, that the restaurant was not for drinks. Not on the menu that this is the norm at the highly regarded restaurant. The guy could even make the approach, but in at least a more polite way. We just wanted to have the most legendary experience, have a beer and after a few minutes, order the appetizers and then dinner. A grade is an indication of 0. I suggest the manager gives training to this guy who acts against a title that is so difficult to receive and maintain.

Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
