Restaurante O Luar da Foia

About
Travellers' Choice
2024
29 years ago, in the same place our restaurant is located, we opened a small wooden bar that little or nothing resembled the current space of O Luar da Foia. Since then, the desire to innovate, preserving all the local traditions, and the desire to transform Monchique into a gastronomic destination of excellence have always been nourishment for our success. However, nothing would be possible without the tireless work of our team and the enormous pride and love we have for the village of Monchique ... They are what define us. Come and try the flavors of our land at the table of those who know them well ...

I had a wonderful dining experience at Luar da Fóia while visiting Monchique! The restaurant offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, which made for a truly relaxing atmosphere.
The fresh food was the highlight of the visit – I enjoyed perfectly cooked fresh fish paired with delicious hand-cut fries. Every bite tasted incredibly fresh and flavorful. The service was warm and attentive, adding to the overall pleasant experience.
Another big plus is the free parking conveniently located just opposite the restaurant, making it easily accessible. Whether you’re in the area for sightseeing or just passing through, this is a fantastic spot to enjoy a memorable meal. Highly recommend!

Good restaurant and beautifully located. Excellent meals. We had the piri-piri chicken and (2? Yes 2) pork chops from the grill with potato chips, spoon of apple sauce and lettuce with orange. Delicious. With a large glass of rosé, 1 bottle of water and 1 coffee and cappuccino with whipped cream for € 48.90.

Excellent food and service. The restaurant run two sittings and so to speed things up encourage diners to start with freshly carved ham, local cheese, bread and olives. There is an extensive range of mains which are interesting, well seasoned and generous portions. Our table had the black pork with bread mash, lamb chops and chicken kebabs which were all cooked on the grill. The pork came with a watercress and orange salad which was very refreshing. Puddings were good and again generous. There were some wines being decanted but the house carafe was good value. With the view, would very much recommend.

Fabulous view down to the coast, but service was slow and black pork was served literally on its own with only a bowl of crisps as ‘vegetables’. We asked for an extra side salad, but there was barely enough for one; there were 7 of us. Very disappointing and not cheap either.

We were looking for a place to eat near Monchique and came across this very well-rated restaurant in Google. The car park was nearly full at lunch time, and even though we did not have a reservation, the friendly staff accommodated us on a table on the terrace. Wow! What an incredible view. The food was also fantastic! We had the platter of cured meat and cheese for the table (the meat was sooo good), then mains of lagartos de porco preto, and the carre de porco preto. Both were delicious. So pleased we stopped here. Highly recommended.

Discrimination in quality of the dishes served with respect to diners at adjacent tables.
Salted ham served from leftovers, dry and inedible when the one we have served at other tables was freshly cut.
The pork feather was dry and hard and couldn't be chewed.
The rest good.
Is this treatment because he is Spanish?
It has disappointed me a lot, and we came recommended
It's a shame we wanted to enjoy the food and it wasn't possible.

Our Algarve home is an hour away from this lovely place but it’s become somewhere we “must visit” every trip. The food is amazing quality, portions are huge and the service is fab. As for the view! Can’t be beaten! It’s much cheaper up here than on the coast for obvious reasons but the quality of food surpasses many of the best places near the sea.

We arrived in family, only with the intention to know the space! We were welcomed by two very nice girls.
After a few steps we were greeted by a gentleman who insistently invited us to sit down, ask for something to petish.
He hurriedly sat down, gave us the letter and entries: bread, olives, ham and cheese.
Then again insisted for some entries. He suggested the dwarf eggs with choirise, whipped gambas and a hamburger on the plate.
All doses were cold, scarce, poorly cooked, very greasy and sincerely NOT to REPEAT.
When we finished the employees were already having lunch, so we were served by another employee.
In fact, we paid 86€ for food that was hit us and leaves much to be desired.
Save yourself the natural orange juice!

Wonderful food, especially hunting meats, super tasty, well cooked and very well served. The view is fantastic and very friendly. Advisable to book because it is always full of people.
Prices have already increased a little this year, but it is worth the experience.

As a previous reviewer commented absolutely no time to relax. Went in with my 5 year old daughter at around 7pm even before sitting down and time to take in the view their normal starters were pushed on us and at the table within 30 seconds. 1st waiter came within 2 minutes and of course not ready to order, then again 2 mins later, then the manager/owner 2 mins later and at that point he got frustrated and said we had to order soon. My daughter is fussy and the menu is more suited to the adult palate and only offered tuna as a fish dish which would t work for her so I insisted on another minute to which he huffed off. At this point I wanted to get of here as they were more keen on a quick turnaround than offering any friendly relaxing atmosphere. To add insult to injury I was then charged €25 for a little cheese, cured ham, bread and a glass of wine. Certainly not a restaurant to choose with young children and you want to relax without feeling the clock is on you. The manager/owner was awful and made me so angry it ruined my night.

Bear in mind this was late Feb, and we were still amongst the last to get a lunch table at 12:45… warmly welcomed by helpful energetic staff - the place was busy. Lots of interesting menu options, many carefully grilled over coals by a couple of chefs barely visible in the smoke, in their dedicated BBQ area just outside the dining room. Several quite rustic Portuguese options we hadn’t come across before. Portions are generous and we agree earlier comments about the offered appetisers. This is the place to go if you are in Monchique, not just for the magnificent view but for quality food. Oh and the banoffee pie was delicious.

We were recommended this restaurant by the family.
It was a bit of a trek from Tavira but with a damp forecast we booked and made the trip.
The views here are spectacular but the food is the star.
The ingredients used are of the highest quality and served in very traditional ways.
The lamb and the roast pork were particularly good.
The roast potatoes a gift from above.
The wine list is well chosen and reasonably priced.
Add this to great service from Sandra and the others and you have an exceptional restaurant.
Probably one of the best in the Algarve.
Looking forward to our next visit.

For anyone going to or passing through the Monchique area, you have to stop at Luar do Foia, as you won't be left indifferent. There were 3 of us and as we had a pet we stayed on the terrace. The food was delicious, we ate oxtail, chickpea stew and veal cheeks, all DIVINE!! We have no complaints whatsoever, from the starters to the desserts and the fabulous service from the staff, who are always in a good mood.
I highly recommend it! Congratulations!

The restaurant sits looking over the hills to the sea which makes it very popular. It attracts and caters for I presume mainly for tourists and has a very slick operation. You are offered cheese and ham on plates straight away rather than the traditional cover which is rather pushy.
The spare ribs were good but the Piri Piri chicken was poor with some scrawny pieces and the blandest sauce ever tasted. Wines by the glass were good as was the fig and carob dessert. Much prefer the nearby Jardim d’Oliveras which is more genuine but was closed on this Wednesday.

A totally outstanding experience. We enjoyed a stunning tomato salad …. What could be special about that? Tomatoes that actually tasted like fruit as opposed to the red round things that you find in supermarkets that could be cardboard, and beautifully dressed. To follow, the wild boar casserole which was out of this world. Finishing with a chocolate mousse that was pleasant if not epic.
Unfortunately, in August, they do two sittings…. 7-9 or 9-11. The result is that we felt quite significantly rushed (admittedly we were 15 minutes late). I cannot criticize this policy since one has to realize that most of their revenue comes during this period and needs to support their business through the off-season. Hence we will make the effort to return later in the year….it’s a significant trip for us, but we’ll worth the effort.
