About
The three buildings housing D’Swarte Walvis tell us much about the rich history of the Zaan region. The kitchen is part of a Merchant’s House. The restaurant, the brasserie, the Regents Room, and the upstairs room are located in a former Orphanage. And in the Whaler’s Warehouse (warehouse for whale hunters), the bar and the Commander’s Room have been established.

We had a fantastic lunch today overlooking the water. It was so peaceful and an escape from the crowds. We had a Caesar salad and a lunch platter with mushroom soup, green salad, soft bound egg, Fish salad and a shrimp croquette. The meal was excellent. Make reservations if you want to eat outside as it fills up. The dinner menu also looked great.

De Hoop is a pretty classy outfit with a lot if history in it. Nicely located inside the Zaanse Schans history park. Staff is friendly and their Mackerel salad lunch sandwich was actually very tasty with excellent quality bread. Prices not too high certainly given the touristic location.

On October 10 delicious dinner in the Black Whale. The food was exquisite and very nicely made up. A number of areas for improvement: We were already asked what we want to drink, even before we could take our place!! Too bad the employee didn't want to tell us if the main course with the chef's menu was meat or fish!! The empty tables in the middle do not contribute to a warm ambiance. In addition, we find the decoration of the tables very sober for such a restaurant. We lacked a bit of the atmosphere and grandeur of years ago!

I visited this restaurant while visiting the area with friends. They were touring the windmills in the area and I had already visited them so I went in search of a lunch and drink. This restaurant was nearly empty. I ordered three items, one of which was fries. The service was extremely slow even though there was hardly anyone at the restaurant. The food came and the waitress told me that I wasn’t allowed to be in there as I wasn’t allowed to just order fries. But I had 3 items. A drink, a dessert and fries. My bill was 20 euros. They came in 3 times and told me again that I wasn’t allowed to sit in there and only order fries. The table next to me was a group of people that mostly only had a cup of soup or fries and they were drinking water. I then told them that I had 10 people joining me and was told they were not allowed in if they were only ordering fries. I told them that I wasn’t sure what they would be ordering but that people would eat and have drinks. Then the manager came and told me that I wasn’t allowed to sit there and only order fries. I have no idea why I was treated so poorly but it was very upsetting. Especially as I was told 3 times by different people. I finished up my items and paid and joined my friends sitting outside as they were not allowed in. Maybe it was because I am an American? The other table that had fries was not American so maybe that’s why?

Hello Katemclaren83, I am sorry to hear about your experience and I will ask the staff if they can recall what happened. The problem we often face is that people ordering food and drink from the 'To Go' counter want to sit in the a la carte restaurant. I don't know what happened in your case but I will found out. It has nothing to do with where people come from, we never exclude anybody.

We arrived by car, barrier in front of the parking lot did not work. Were welcomed confused. Restaurant lacks ambiance despite the fantastic history of the property. Tea lights were out (and at most tables we could see burned out). 3 tables occupied out of 12. All guests were seated side by side, no privacy. No tablecloth, no flower, baldness. Drink on the table without being poured. Warm brown ball with frozen butter as a starter a 6 eu. for 3 people. When the plates were picked up, one knife went too many. "Is there still one?" was the response. Hospitality is a talent, a gift, not a job. No advice or tips with the map. 3 main courses chosen: Sea bass, steak and fries, hamburger. Sea bass seemed a roach so small (and not fresh), steak was cold. Hamburger was good and tasty. Accompanying vegetables limp. Black chips here and there, lots of hard little bits. Mayonnaise in a limp paper thimble, was empty after 5 fries. But full prices as if you were coming to eat in a real restaurant. Staff wear sneakers and jeans, something we did not expect in this ambience. Website creates an impression of atmosphere that is not there in reality. Empty water bottles were silently removed from the table. All in all absolute disappointment.

It was a disappointing evening for us (4 adults). As soon as we sat there was already a waiter who did not greet us but immediately asked what we wanted to drink. No warm welcome, no menu with drinks and no wine list. Wine list asked and then the waiter initially stood there as if you made a choice in a minute. The menu was not quite to our taste. There are 4 starters on it, some small dishes to share or to create your own menu where they advise to have 2 and then 3 main courses. We decided to have a small dish beforehand. We had the salmon with horseradish which was very good only a pity that no toast was served with it. One bao bun with pork belly which unfortunately was a piece of fried pork belly instead of softly cooked pork belly. Wasn't bad in taste but not a winner. And then another gamba pill, which was with little pill pill. Wash bland, not enough garlic and not enough pepper. There was toast in this but that was hard, not getting through. For the main course 3 of us chose the chicken satay, which is special because we never order this when we are out to dinner. But because we didn't know how to make any other choice from this menu, we chose a dish that can't go wrong. Unfortunately, a seat can still be ruined! The chicken was lukewarm to cold and had no taste. The chicken was not marinated or seasoned and the satay sauce tasteless. Luckily the steak was good only a pity that they do not offer the choice for other sauces. Hollandaise sauce with steak would not be our first choice, that sauce goes better with fish or eggs benedict. All in all a very disappointing evening and not worth repeating. Still our compliments for the cook who came to our table after our satays went back kitchen to listen to our experience. So everything that is here he has heard from us personally.

We had read that the concept had been modified, which prompted us to make a reservation again. You get a pleasant, friendly welcome to start with and the whole atmosphere is still casual and cozy. The card made it clear that the concept was not completely changed at once, we got the impression that some adjustments had been made to the menu. Nothing wrong with that, there was still plenty to choose from, but the advance information had raised some different expectations. The quality of the food was good, we had absolutely delicious food. One comment: the staff apparently still have to get a little on top of each other, until twice we had to indicate that we had ordered another glass of wine which apparently had been forgotten. We were also offered 2 glasses of wine, which we had not ordered, that were for another table (can happen of course, it remains human work). It's just a pity that this was in our account and paid by us. But despite a small minus we had a nice evening and ate fine. We will be back sometime!

Fine food in this still beautiful place. Great appetizers, tasty sharing dishes and we also got a discount because of the new menu. The cacophony because of the dramatic acoustics in the dining room was overwhelming. That was nicely solved for us when we could eat in the bar. That was nice and attentive from the service.

Our experience at restaurant DeHoop on d’Swarte Walvis was very enjoyable. The ambiance of the building has a lot of history and you can see that and experience it. The music was pleasant and not too loud. The staff was very friendly. The food was beautifully presented and we didn't have to wait long for it. We really liked the new concept of sharing between dishes. This introduces you to multiple flavors. And it was really delicious! And the beer comes from brewery de Hoop from Zaandijk, highly recommended! Only the dessert I found somewhat unimaginative compared to the between dishes we had consumed. A lot of ice cream and the whipped cream wasn't so good. I had Hangop with caramel sauce and that was very sweet and the hangop didn't look like hangop. Because I sometimes make them myself at home and then it is firmer and slightly sour which would be a nice counterpart for the very sweet caramel sauce. The presentation was good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends. The prices are also nice. Even without the October discount, it is quite feasible for the average wallet.

Great food and service. We had the dishes to share and they were all delicious. Also nicely made, good portions and on every plate was not only fish or meat but also a lot of vegetables and possibly a sandwich. Highly recommended!

The location is great. The welcome friendly. Still some critical points. Price quality out of proportion. The portions are small. gyoza from the supermarket?! The hamburger was raw inside. Table next to us sent food back because the meat was cold. Glasses remained empty (in two hours we were only asked what we wanted to drink when we sat down and the menu was removed after the first round of shared dining dishes, while maybe a second round could be done. All in all a mediocre experience, For the location I will come back again for a drink on the terrace. But not for dinner.

A bad spoiler to the place! Staff have terrible attitude welcoming me with almost as if why you came here. The waiters are so unbothered to keep the customers that they leave you waiting to order for over 20 minutes and when you tell them that you are leaving because of it they just say “ok”

The ambiance was superb. Service was friendly but it took some effort to indicate that you still want to order something. For starter I had the gyoza, which was great. Main course was ravioli, it was unfortunately bland and the edges were dried out. I indicated this and that would be discussed with the cook. Unfortunately, no feedback was forthcoming. The other family members had a great meal. And a nice side effect was the 25% discount on the entire bill. All in all we would love to come back again.

The croquettes were good, the greenery that came with it, something like cabbage, was tasteless! I had made a reservation and when I got home I received a reprimand by email because I had not shown up! Maybe you should inquire under what name the reservation was made instead of falsely accusing someone, a bit of a shame! All in all, mediocre

Had lunch with a larger group to celebrate something special. Then you expect them to perhaps go the extra mile. But that turned out to be a vain hope. The quality of the food was downright disappointing. Some starters had little to offer. Some chicory leaves with a filling that you really had to look for. The fish dish that a large part of the party had ordered had a strange purple gray veil. And the fish was simply not prepared well. They did a good job of pouring wine. My conclusion is that there could be a little more love for the product, the plate and the guests. A place that once boasted a Michelin star should want this better.
