Unusual location, but a real must-visit! Nice welcome, modern decor and a varied, enticing menu. Food all very appealingly plated and the flavors certainly didn’t disappoint. What an experience and an excellent project too. Best wishes to all those making this work so well 👏👏👏

This is a hidden gem in Milan. Situated in a medium security prison, this is a succesful rehabilitation project training prisoners in the art of gastronomic cuisine. The meals are cooked and served by inmates and other than the entrance to the restaurant, one would...never know that. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with posters of « prison » movies. The food is excellent and generous and their wine list is impressive but reasonable. A very pleasant evening and a good cause to support. Note that it is located about 35 minutes from the city centre.More

Just back from a lovely meal. Enjoyed the vegetarian options too. A great concept and lovely atmosphere. Liked the little touches of welcome processco drinks, little taster dish and lovely nutty chocolate I between courses. Presentation of food was good and very big portions.

I went here for a meal with a work colleague on a recent business trip to Saronno just outside Milan. The concept sounded interesting ( rehabilitation of medium security prisoners through restaurant working and training opportunities) and the website and menu options appeared good value...and offered a selection of vegetarian options - if advised in advance. I booked through our hotel concierge and also advised that one of the party was vegetarian and this seemed to be a problem over the phone. After a long discussion the concierge said the restaurant would be able to accommodate me with some food but it was a problem.....not a great start. On arrival we were escorted to the restaurant from the security gatehouse and quickly seated. I did note that we were not provided a menu option to view ( unlike many other customers - some of whom were ordering from a menu) but we were literally ‘ told’ what we would be eating. First course for both of us was piece of fruit wrapped in Parma ham....so I gave this to my colleague and was offered no vegetarian alternative. Second course was a small pasta plate - mine was tomato based but bland and tasteless. My colleague had seafood pasta...which he said was ok. My main course was an extremely disappointing plate of a selection of local ? cheeses with some pickled fruit and walnuts ( which I found inedible) - while my colleague received yet more seafood steamed in a plastic bag which arrived at the table tied with a tie wrap. This included razor clams, octopus, fish, mussels etc ...but was too much and he didn’t enjoy - particularly whole baby octopus! . We were then finally given a menu for desserts choice and I chose semi-fredo with berries...which was tasteless ice too. Whilst my colleague chose a chocolate dessert which looked the best dish of the night. The meal was 110 Euros ( including a 20 euro bottle of wine) - and I left hungry and could have cooked better myself. For a supposed good quality restaurant to serve a platter of cheeses for a vegetarian Main course and charge these prices is shameful and lazy. Not great value or tasty food....that didn’t show any great skill. Avoid if you are vegetarian - this is a no go. We have a Michelin star restaurant local in the UK which has a 3 course vegetarian menu for the same price and is outstanding...I could have cooked better than this.More

Quite a good choice of good dishes, accurately prepared and presented. Professional personnel and pleasant environment (with ironical posters and pictures on the wall). All in all a very positive experience - only possible problem the fact that the restaurant can only be reached by...car (no metro).More

As stated in many reviews that proceeded mine, I would agree. It is a great concept that is done well. Nice interior, although all the prison based film posters seemed a little cliché. The service (staff were very professional and friendly) and the quality of...food was very good, and the price equally. I'll happily go there again just so others can share this experience.More

Not the easiest of places to get to on public transport, but well worth the effort. We entered the prison and waited for our escort to the restaurant. A charming young guard marched us across the carpark-a novel start to the evening. Inside the restaurant...is elegant-and amusing-the posters are all film posters about prison escapes! The wine list is interesting and the menu, while limited is well;balanced and varied. The food was well-cooked and beautifully presented. The service was attentive; all the staff (except the maitre d')-front of house and kitchen-are "guests" (the word used on the restaurant's website) of the prison. They were all happy to talk about the project, which has been running for 2 years now. It is easy to forget where you are while you are eating. A brilliant idea, well-executed. Worth the trip both for the food and to support the concept.More

The meal was excellent, the wine list quite impressive. As important is what the Silvia Polleri and others are doing in the prison. They have created a remarkably successful program for prisoners, who not only do all of the cooking and other work in the...restaurant but who successfully transition to freedom. Its 'graduates' have a recidivism rate of 20%, well below the typical 60% rate. We met a number of inmates, now proud that they contribute to their families and to society. Enjoy the entire experience.More

The location is special and elegant. The project is really interesting and the coordinator can show you all the deatils about that. You have the opportunity to meet the staff High quality food and service. We were lucky 'cause one of the chefs explained us...the menu and the secret of the "pil pil of codfish". We took spinach flan and the best fresh scallops never tried with choccolate and truffle. The Risotto was really tasty! You cannot leave if you have not tasted the dessert.. more than one ;-) The plates presentation is amazing!!! Good balance quality-price. Is an experience to try...and try again.More

I think it's one of the best restaurants where I've been! Futhermore, it has also another facet which is the reintegration in the society of imprisoned. Excellent food, terrific presentation and really good waiters are the elements for the perfect supper!!

Excellent dinner. Excellent wine list. Dedicated, warm, funny and welcoming staff. Overall we have spent a very pleasant evening and at the same time we have supported a nice project with a crucial goal: help prisoners learn a job to prepare them for their future...life out of jail, giving them to have a second chance. I will definitely go back, and I can certainly recommend it. Reservation is mandatory.More

Thanks for other reviewers comments, we were encouraged to visit with various media reports and had heard the food was good despite this being literally in a Minimum Security prison. You enter through the administration/civilian entrance and walk through parking lot to arrive at In...Galera (Follow the Red signs). Menus are a la carte or by Set Menu (30 euros), which represents good value. Food is updated traditional Italian and Starters and Deserts in the 10-15e and Main Courses 22-35e. Staff are friendly and take their work seriously. Many are near the end of their Sentences and hoping that InGalera prepares them for future life in the Restaurant industry. Also note the decor is simple with Movie posters (in Italian) like Shawshank Redemption or Escape from Alcatraz. This opportunity makes good social justice and I hope more people visit them. Good luck and enjoy!More

Our pasta dishes were among the best we had on an 8 day stay in Italy. The wine by the glass was excellent, not the usual questionable table wine. As for the service, all the men were attentive, professional, delightful to interact with and so...accommodating. We asked to move into an unused half of the space because there was a happy noisy group in the main space. Despite the inconvenience to them, they moved us without hesitation. Toward the end of our meal the manager and mastermind behind this unimaginable project placing a trendy restaurant in a prison arrived. Signora Polleri had heard that we were from New York and came over to thank us for coming. We had a nice chat about how well things are going and how happy she is that more people are learning about this great (if a bit out of the way) eatery. The warm welcome spreads even to staff beyond the restaurant. I called for a taxi to take us back to the center of Milan and I was having a hard time explaining exactly where I was. I handed the phone to the guard who welcomes visitors, explaining that my Italian was not doing the trick. He gave me one of those Italian shrugs, then got the job done. Do not hesitate to venture a bit north of the center of Milan to enjoy a meal and support this wonderful project. I highly recommend it.More

Very friendly and professional service. Wonderful project. You forget to be in a real prison and feel in a smart downtown restaurant. Food experience is good but can be improved. You need a reservation in order to find a table.
