Modena as well as the region is the home for the famous tortellini…and we had to stop! A quality trattoria with authentic food and a friendly host.

What a great find this restaurant was. We tried the polenta starter followed by a few different pastas and their special dumpling main. All superb along with their own version of tiramasu. A feeling of having a wonderful home cooked family meal.
Thank you 961gabriellec ! We are really happy to have let you take home an excellent memory of Modena cuisine We hope to see you again soon! The staff Trattoria Pomposa al re gras
From my visit in January 2023. I know this place as Trattoria Pomposa al Re gras. I read about this place on a couple of food blogs and knew I had to try it. I came early but since it was the offseason (January) there...was no problem getting a table although reservations are recommended. Serving homemade pastas and traditional Modena food they do most things well. All of the employees were very friendly and accommodating to me and my limited Italian language skills. This made up for the lack of 5 star service but if it had been busy I could see where it may be a problem. I had: Antipasti- Calzagatti (fried polenta with beans): and ricotta. 4/5 This was on my list of food to try and it didn’t disappoint. Primi- Tortelloni with ricotta and spinach, butter and Parmigiano Reggiano 5/5 OMG! The best pasta dish I had in Italy. It literally melted in my mouth. I still dream about this. Secondi- "La Petroniana": Bolognese style cutlet (with ham and Parmesan Cheese), mashed potatoes 3.5/5 Another on my list of food to try. It was flavorful it’s just the cutlet was too dry, otherwise would have been good. Dolci- Chocolate salame with mascarpone cream 4.5/5 Rich chocolate flavor balanced nicely with the mascarpone. If not for the dry La Petroniana this would have been a 5/5. When I returned to Modena 3 weeks later I decided to eat here again because the tortelloni was so good. This time I had: Antipasti- Parmesan and spinach pudding, walnuts, mustard or jam 4.5/5 Primi- I said tortellini not realizing I wanted tortelloni so I got Tortellini in chicken broth 4/5 It was good I just wanted tortelloni. Primi- Yes I ordered a second Primi because of my mistake so I had to try the Green Lasagne 5/5 Secondi- Pork Scaloppine: with Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Igp, mashed patatoes 3.5/5 Once again a flavorful dish just too dry for my liking. Dolci- Panna cotta with Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Igp 5/5 Overall a very good restaurant I recommend when in Modena.More
The food was delicious, polenta and the medenese ragu were amazing. The service was very good as well. Price was amazingly low.
This restaurant is located in one of the most traditional squares in Modena, the Piazza della Pomposa from which it takes its name. It takes its name from the church dedicated to Santa Maria, founded in the 9th century. I recommend visiting it before entering...the restaurant. The restaurant it's like a culinary journey to discover those authentic flavors passed down from generation to generation with the simplicity of an authentic and rustic meal.More
We had a gourmet menu It was weak Ham was very good but sliced one day before Ragù was good but fettuccine overcoocked Stracotto meat was so do Tiramisu was very weak
We visited tonight – only 3 appetizers were available (even proscuitto was unavailable) only 3 first courses were available and only 3 main courses (out of 8 items listed on the menu for each course!) We were only advised of this after ordering wine which...was brought to the table – a tasting poured without even showing us the bottle and the bottle put down on the table after which the server just walked away. The main course was served on a cold plate which meant it was barely luke warm by the time it was half eaten. Really, really disappointing.More
We had high hopes for this restaurant but we will not be returning any time soon. Some of the courses were very good, but we ordered the wood oven roast, which turned out to be a cut of pork that was so grey, tough, and...dry that it could not be cut with a knife. I was surprised the kitchen was willing to serve it. We wondered whether we simply had bad luck, but the table next to us also complained about it.More
The first issue was the smell. We almost left it was so terrible. Thought it was the bathroom, but no. Maybe mold? Other problem? Both my husband and I were repulsed and had I been in their position I would have canceled any reservations and...rooted out the problem instead of allowing the wrong impression. Our waitress was very good. Warm and welcoming. (Blonde lady). The girl who greeted us was unfriendly. Felt like we were putting her out even though we had a reservation. The gnocchi was excellent.More
I had dinner outside with a friend who attended university in Modena in the 80s. Heaters kept us comfortably warm. We both had spinach pasta lasagne aka green pasta and a glass of local red wine. The lasagne was one of the best I’ve ever...had. The service was excellent and the restaurant perfectly located on one of Modena’s most idyllic piazzas.More
The restaurant is in the middle of old town on a beautiful, lively square. Service is outstanding. The menu is all local food. Very authentic and of highest quality and taste. Just the Tagliata was somewhat overcooked. If you order that you should order medium...rare or rare, not medium. Taste was outstanding though, so we still give 5 points.More
It was rather busy with a queue but luckily i gay booked in advance. The location is lovely. Right by one of the squares with a nice quiet location. The outside terrace is spacious and well kept. Service was great if on the slow side....It was rather let down by the food - both courses salty, dry and tbh a bit unpleasant. I had the polpette and lasagne verde so nothing too ambitious.More
We were group of five. We tried lasagna, tortellini, pork meat and aubergine. The food was average quality, the problem is that they cheated us with the bill, and they did it twice ! Never had such experience in other restaurants in Italy. Do not...recommend to visit it.More

Along with a friend from Modena we wanted to try local Tortellini, with Sorbara Lambrusco, followed by zampone e lentils. Good wholesome food, extremely tasty and satisfying. The place is genuine, not remodeled and the service was friendly.More
