Classic Italian restaurant next to the Pantheon. The red tuna tartare with avocado, capers, and red onion was incredibly fresh. The mozzarella and anchovy stuffed fried zucchini were disappointingly bland and slightly greasy. The classic spaghetti alla carbonara was delicious but a bit too rich.

This place is beyond incredible. Cesar was super helpful from wine selection to food recommendations. Also location is incredible. The wall is full of celebrities who have visited the place more than once including Clinton, Reagan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dustin Hoffman and more.

With so many touristy restaurants near the Pantheon, it’s not easy to find a great dinner at a moderate price. Da Fortunato has proper service, both inside and outside dining, and very good food. Wide choice of good wines by the glass.

This was a wonderful evening with good food and wine. The wine was an interesting bottle from Lazio. The sommelier’s suggest of a small local vineyard made from Bellone grape was an excellent choice for us to try. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We tried this restaurant because it looked elegant and was literally a few steps from the door of our hotel. It turned out to be a superb experience. The waiters were old school - helpful , polite, well informed, unobtrusive yet still friendly. Service was...efficient but not rushed. The atmosphere was very pleasant. Visited a few times as we enjoyed it so much! Sampled a number of excellent pasta dishes including linguini with fresh white truffle, and spagatonni with artichoke and baby calamari. The grilled porcini mushrooms were fabulous! Would happily returnMore

Watch your wallet at this place. We really got taken. My husband and I ordered a fish to share (Orata). We were never shown the fish until the waiter brought it out to us to eat. 90 EUROS!!!!! For just a plain white meat fish...barely...enough for 2. Couple that with stodgy waiters with attitude and a boring atmosphere to make for a very forgettable experience. There are MUCH better places, at half the price, to eat in Rome. Try Al 34. They are the antithesis especially if you get Mario!More

We must have walked past this restaurant hundreds of times. The reason why we haven’t eaten here is simple – we tend to visit places listed in our Italian food guide. Why that changed is also simple. We are not (ahem) “in the full flush...of youth” and as such, don’t like eating late. Da Fortuno is one establishment that advertises all day opening - and actually is. Unlike some establishments we visited, whose website opening times were pure fiction. Walking past, the food at least looked pretty good. The tables had classic white tablecloths, (always a good sign) and the staff in the smart white coats so popular in old-style Italian restaurants. It was very hot outside, so we had a table indoors which was both cool and extremely comfortable. The food on our first visit was wonderful. The three starters of Mozzarella, (shared), a superb Vitello Tonnato and one of the best fried Calamari, (with anchovies) I have tasted. It was so good that my wife and I had it on the next visit. For the mains, we had a fairly standard Fettucine with Ragu and an excellent Spaghetti Vongole. The star was the Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe. This is the trickiest of the three Roman classics to get right. Look at any recipe and you think, “How hard is that”? It’s very, very hard to get that cheesy creaminess and this was simply perfect. Possibly the best I’ve ever had and no touristy “fireworks” by having it served from a cheese wheel. Just, simple, excellent, pasta perfection. A Saltimbocca was also given the “thumbs-up”. Desserts of a Ricotta Cake and a stunning Tiramisu deserve full marks. Our second visit was just me and my wife and, as I said, we started by sharing the large plate of Calamari and Anchovies – excellent. We were both craving a bit of red meat, so I chose the Beef Fillet with Green Pepper Sauce and my wife had the Entrecote Steak with roast potato. We also ordered a side of fried Porcini (which we spotted in a display on the way in). My steak was not cooked as requested but luckily, I’m not too bothered by my meat being underdone. Quite a lot of the “juices” bled into the pepper sauce (which was excellent by the way). If I were squeamish, that level of “rare” was pure “Send it back” territory. My wife’s Entrecote was a little better and was of a considerable size. Way bigger than the advertised 300gr but a lot of that extra weight was fat. The worst crime was how the porcini was served, being way too oily. All funghi have a propensity for absorbing a lot of the cooking medium and those “meaty” porcini slices had done just that. Not particularly pleasant. As for drinks, the bottle of Primitivo we had on our first visit was excellent and fairly priced. The Cesanese we had on our second visit was even better. Service was polite and impeccable. On the basis of visit number one I’d say it’s a five star place but a point (at least) was deducted for the failings of the second. There are lots of photographs of "celebrity" diners from previous years - if you're impressed by that kind of thing. I think we will return on our next trip to Rome.More

A friend of my husband's recommended Da Fortunato and frequently mentioned that it was his favorite restaurant in Rome. We looked at the menu online and decided to try it since his friend loves it so much and has raved about how wonderful it is....We did not make a reservation, but my husband and I had dinner at Da Fortunato restaurant, and although the meals were good (I ordered chicken and my husband had cottolleta), it was not a positive experience. After asking if we wanted wine, which we did not choose to order, our waiter never spoke again at all, but his negative attitude was very clearly disrespectful. After he tossed the menus on our table, he walked away, and did not speak to us. He never asked if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our meals. We noticed that he approached the next customers in much the same way, tossing menus on the table, scowling, and walking away without greeting them. Dining at DA Fortunato was an unpleasant experience, and we cannot ever recommend it to anyone. Our waiter's attitude and behavior were rude, surly, obnoxious, insolent, and unwelcoming. As a result, he ruined our evening. We were in Rome for more than a week and visited several excellent restaurants to which we would love to return at the next visit, but this restaurant was by far the absolute worst. We were very uncomfortable and very disappointed. I will say that when the waiter brought the bill, I said to him "Is there a reason why you have been so rude? Do you realize how rude you are?" No reply. We have never had such a terrible experience, and felt it important to let others know about our experience. I suggest that this Da Fortunato waiter needs training and help in learning how to be polite and personable with customers. He had the personality of a wet spaghetti noodle and is not a good representative of the restaurant. For the first time ever, we left without leaving a tip.More

Having very nearly cancelled our reservation after looking at some previous reviews, we were so glad we didn’t. This wasn’t the cheapest meal out in Rome but overall we were happy with what we paid for. Located down an alley not far from the Pantheon...we were greeted by smartly dressed waiters who, after some initial confusion with our reservation, seated us inside. The menu is expansive and our 12 year old had to decide between three dishes he’d picked out. There is no kids menu but the pasta dish size wasn’t too over the top as we’ve seen elsewhere in Italy. The wine list is huge with a good spread of choice and cost. As I was the only one drinking wine, I asked for a glass and was shown a different menu of around 20 “by the glass” options. The food was excellent. Between us we had pasta, smoked salmon, lamb chops and steak - clear plates every time. We made room for desert and they didn’t disappoint either. Service was professional and not rushed. We enjoyed our 2 hours in the restaurant. Much has been said about the friendliness of (or lack of) the staff but we found them to be polite, despite some language barrier challenges. They made our son laugh or several occasions! Overall, it wasn’t the cheapest of evenings but we walked away happy with our choice and look forward to going back again in the future.More

What an amazing dinner - from start to finish. The atmosphere (white tableclothes, well heeled waiters, tableside decanting and fish prepartion) and the food could not be better. This is fine dining in a small and "clublike" atmosphere. They have a full bar and the...martini for me was most welcome after having days of wine and spritzes. The wine list for dinner was also very extensive. Their fish are on ice and you can choose what they will cook. We started with the roman artichoke which was very large and well prepared. We shared a pasta and had beef filet and chicken for the main course with some sides of potatoes and vegetables. Dessert was tiramisu since one of the missions was to try every "nona's" version of the famed dessert while traveling through Italy. This version was not a dissapointment. Every dish was tasty and the right temperature. This is definitely a restaurant you want to try to reservations for as I cannot say enough good things about the food, waiters, and ambience.More

We went for a late (4pm) Sunday lunch and had booked by telephone the week before. It was a wonderful couple of hours from the greeting when we arrived. Service was impeccable and the food gorgeous. We had read reviews before going and none of...the concerns arising came to fruition. Yes our waiter didn’t write anything down but yes we got precisely what we ordered ((equally we didn’t keep changing our minds). We were given plenty of time whilst we had a cocktail and never felt rushed. Every member of staff we encountered was incredibly polite and very friendly. The anti pasti were delicious and of an ideal portion size for an Italian meal and the pasta primi were also a perfect size. I would definitely go back and, over a 4 day stay this was, by a considerable margin, our best meal.More
