To be honest, almost all pastry to can try in Napoli (Naples) is excellent, and Gran Caffe Gambrinus is the most recognized in the whole region because of the tradition and quality of their pastry. Excellent! Perfect!
However, as an international traveler, you could be expecting a little more pleasant experience for a pastry shop. Sadly, that not what you will get. It is not bad! But it is just a plain and simple pay at the cashier and take your product. Sadly, this is maybe the Naples code for a living, it is the same everywhere.
Definitely, you have to go there and try at least a couple of their pastries specialties. The Vesuvio is great!

Love this place! My heart just sings when I enter it- such a decor with all the art and history! I have a thing for old historical cafés. Here you can have excellent coffee, cocktails, gelato and other desserts. Atmosphere is just so fabulous and only to imagine that Oscar Wilde, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway and other amazing personalities including royalty frequented this place gives me the chills! Our friend from Naples suggested to take Gambrinus’ beer gelato. We also took a violet gelato and a milkshake. The day was hot.
In my previous review from a couple of years ago I rated Gran Caffe Gambrinus with the highest possible rating but this time I would like to mention that the service was so slow - it felt as if we almost were ignored on purpose. We were literally the only ones in the main dining room (the other customers were sitting outside) so I don’t know what happened but I would be definitely back here next time we are in Naples and would love to see the service I experienced during the first visits.

Located at the Plebiscito Square this big grand cafe has everything to offer for coffee or a lunch. They also have beer and spirits. The staff is formal but correct. Service is quick and efficient. Prices as you might expect and surprise me. Lunch for four persons with two glasses of wine each came at 96 EUR.

If you are charging €10 for a cappuccino, maybe customer service should be a thing! We sat for 10 minutes while 3 waiters stood around staring at the sky. Walked 2 minutes away and were welcomed with smiles, an equivalent menu & an entire breakfast for the cost of one overpriced, underwhelming espresso. Feels like these folks are coasting on reputation alone. Better everything 2 minutes in any direction. Hard pass.

We were just looking for a place to have a coffee and a piece of cake during an afternoon of walk on Napoli.
This café wants to be a fancy old French style place but is clearly not by the food nor by the service.
Cake and coffee are everything but great, very standard and even close to bad. You’ll find better in a lot of tiny places in town.
When it comes to the service, well I’d say please go learn the job and come back. We’re on a terrace where 3 tables were occupied. One of the waiter went through the 3 tables to know to whom he had to serve his plates. He even came back twice to the same wrong table to serve some cakes even if he already served them their cakes.
I mean guys, just by looking at the 3 tables you knew who was alreadly served. Also come on, don’t you work with table numbers??? And they have waiters to serve and table managers to take orders which is more than well staffed.
On top of this we were next to a small table were dirty plates and cups which were leaning there for an hour...
It’s a very expensive place so a least the service could be correct. Fancy means quality of food and service and none of these were there. I strongly recommend to avoid this place. Expensive, bad and terrible service.
If you still want to queue up just because it looks fancy and people put some stories on Instagram... well I won’t judge you for the human being you are ;)

Very rude and ignorant staff!
As a party of six of us sat down, food menus unceremoniously thrown over the table but we only wanted a coffee. The waiter evidently wasn’t interested and decided to go serve the Italian clients who sat down. Three times I politely indicated I wished to place my order and was ignored.
If you’re anything other than Italian I’d suggest you look elsewhere as the ignorant and arrogant staff are full of self importance and appear to have utter contempt for the English.

Ciao Tim,

The location is amazing which explains the price (the most expensive coffee we've had since in Napoli) the thing that was so off-putting is the service, the rudest we've ever seen. Not a smile to ever be seen on the faces, we asked for food (in Italian) the waiter walked away after nodding and never returned. We asked another waiter and were given food but the waiter was so awful, even telling my mum to 'calm' when she went to pay with card. Very disappointing for such a nice looking place. Don't come here as a tourist.

We stopped here for a drink on a rainy Naples pre-lunch drink. The waiter gave us a heads-up that service could be a little slow, and by that he meant ten minutes. As we love people watching, that was fine....and in the end I am pretty sure it was closer to five minutes wait only until our drinks arrived, accompanied by a generous amount of snacks. Chatting with the waiter, he made some amazing suggestions for a seafood restaurant...wrote down the names for us. Very kind, very professional and highly recommended. I would definitely come here again!

The restaurant had a long queue and it was unbelievably busy, so we opted for a takeout box instead.
The patisserie was lovely looking and lovely tasting. The ordering has to be paid for at the cashier first, before the goods will be handed to you in a box, which wasn’t clear from the start.
It is therefore a good idea to go and have a look at what you want, get the staff to write down the prices of the things that you want, and they give you a ticket and you take it to the cashier to pay for it. Then you come back to the counter and then they hand over your goodies.

This apparently famous cafe has lovely surroundings in which to have something delicious looking to eat, but that's about as much as we can say about our visit. We stepped into the cafe and stood at what we took to be the waiting point to be attended to, but were told to step back outside the main cafe into the shop. After then being allowed inside the head waiter pointed at a table a few metres away and told us we'd have to wait 10 minutes to be served. We sat down and looked at the lovely decor. Waiters passed by, other people came in, they got menus (thrown onto their tables), we didn't get anything. After a while we attracted the attention of another passing writer and asked for a menu. He looked at us then continued on his way. No menu. After waiting for at least 15 minutes we decided enough was enough and left. The service wasn't horrendous, it was non existent, and we will be advising our friends against visiting. It might be an iconic Neapolitan cafe but no one should rely on their history for custom if they treat their customers as if they're an irritation and an inconvenience!

Gran Caffè Gambrinus is a rare example of a café that is so famous, it is a destination in its own right. This creates very high expectations, which may be difficult to live up to.
The opulence of the decor is incredible and it has to be seen to be believed. While the prices reflect this, they perhaps don't reflect the relative merits of the food and drink so much. The coffee is good but other, smaller cafés do better and the same goes for the pastries. Whereas the service in Naples is almost universally excellent, there is an aloofness here that makes it feel as though you are expected to drink your coffee, pay and then leave.
I still think it's worth visiting such a famous and attractive café, but be aware that it is out of step with the friendliness and informality offered by most places in this wonderful city.

Tourist Trap!!!
We stopped by for lunch…ordered drinks and club sandwiches and some other dishes Received 1/2 turkey club and the wrong drinks & disappointing caprese salad The waiters insisted that I ordered an ice coffee(I did not) but I didn’t acquiesce they finally took it off the bill. The waiters were quite rude and acted as though they were doing us a favour.
Decided to skip the over priced desserts.
It’s a shame that a beautiful historical cafe has become a tourist trap instead of a fine dining institution.
Go have a look then go somewhere else to eat.

The space is as beautiful as the staff are cold and unwelcoming. Surely, they deal with way too many tourists every day to care about you. We paid 6 euros for tiny cafe nocciolas that were barely warm by the time they made it to our table and had to stop different servers to get menus in the fancy tea room. The only part that was swift was paying the bill. 60 euros and it was an experience best forgotten. We found much tastier and friendlier spaces all over Napoli.

Really bad service. We waited a long time to be seated even though there was no one else there and the waiters didn’t seem to do anything else then look at each other doing nothing. I think they could feel that we were going to give them a bad review because they gave us some extra free food. The food and cocktail was ok and that’s why they get 2 stars.

I came here for breakfast and had to wait 15 minutes at my table before my server even acknowledged me and gave me a menu. The service was poor but the croissant was great and the pistachio coffee was pretty good. Overall I’d say it’s a bit overrated since everyone seems to be saying you must go there while in Naples. I had better experiences at smaller, lesser advertised cafes.
