Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Outstanding food. We'll priced. Created by an eccentric Italian chef and served by a charming Romanian waitress. These two worked hard and succeeded in producing highly original dishes of freshly prepared food. Not a meal to hurry as the chef enjoys the occasional fag break to replenish his batteries, but we'll worth the wait.

Great restaurant. Superb food, the fish was fresh and done to a turn. The spaghetti with sea food was better than I could cook which is my criterion and the care and attention were excellent. Yes, service was a little slow, but after eight days here on the island I go to bed comfortable and replete. The owners are from North Italy, so they know quality and food. What can I say? I will be back for food and hospitality on a lovely island.

When I got back home, I made myself a few slices of bread. I was hungry.
Wine is good, service friendly, but the food was bland, insufficient, and could have been served warmer. We had pasta since the cook is italian: they were served without parmesan and were simply not hot.
The bill was acceptable, but credit cards were not accepted!

Terrible experience for our family of four. We still felt hungry after leaving and were verbally abused by the ‘Italian’ chef. There are unreasonable reviews and factual ones, this one will be the latter.
When we arrived, it took 15min for the waitress to notice us (even though there were only 2 other tables occupied). There was a big language barrier, so we decided to keep it simple and just order a bottle of wine, 2 tuna steaks, gamba’s and risotto.
The gamba’s and risotto arrived quite quickly and the waitress told us the rest would come soon. However, the chef came outside for a smoke, shouting ‘5 minutes brake!’. We were flabbergasted.
The risotto wasn’t risotto at all but a tiny plate of overcooked rice with some Parmesan. The gamba’s were dry but the taste was ok.
15 minutes later, it turned out something went wrong, because the waitress asked us if we would like to order desert, not noticing that half of us didn’t have dinner yet.
After another 10 minutes the tuna arrived. It was a sad, cold, overcooked piece of fish tasting like the grill it came from. The vegetables and potatoes we ordered with it were nowhere to be seen.
We decided to take our loss and get the hell out, but the bill added up to €65,- (we’ve had great meals on La Gomera for much much less). We decided €50 was enough. Instead of apologizing for the bad service, the chef started shouting at us in Italian. We were sorry for the guests still waiting for their meals.

"El Tropico" became one of our favourite restaurants during our yearly Gomera visits. Overall we have been there ten to fifteen times, in the course of three years. We had drinks only (coffee or wine), breakfast, lunch, dinner - with and without friends and even brought family at some point.
The reason why we always come back to enjoy the varying menu at "El Tropico" is simple:
The restaurant owner and chef, Romano, is successfully creating dishes and snacks with fresh, mostly local ingredients, that taste exceptionally good.
They are often simple, but with a little twist, that makes you smile and think..."hm, never thought of that, but it fits perfectly". Also his play with flavours and textures is on point.
One might try to describe the cooking style as fusion cuisine with lots of varieties from dish to dish with influences of asian, oriental, italian, french and other cuisines - integrating a lot of canary-specialties like palm honey, guava, khaki, iberico pork, avocados etc.
If you look for the "typical" Gomera-dishes like "papas arrugadas" with mojo or other traditional dishes, "El Tropico" might not be your first choice, although they have excellent local wines from the garajonay.
So, bring some time and curiosity to explore the menu and let Romano recommend a course and you will not be disappointed.
The prices are moderate and the portions neither too big nor too small (which is a good thing, especially when having starters and dessert as well).
The restaurant is a bit hidden, in a side alley in the inner city of San Sebastian so there is no sea view. But the interieur is cozy and put together with love. You can sit outside aswell without car noises or touristgroups taking pictures of your food. The music is good, not too loud and often jazzy. Sometimes you can listen to live bands and take part in special events like Christmas dinner at the 25th of December.

A place for people who like to instagram their food, not eat it. Bland, no salt, without the spice and ingredients specified on the menu
A friendly hostess and a charming chef who apologized and gave us a discount on the otherwise shameless price. Too bad on the cozy venue as well.
