Unique (terrace) ambiance in Hackesche Höfe. Friendly atmosphere and staff. Menu with relatively limited choice, served with nice presentation and flavours. Worth the detour if you are looking for a quiet alternative in this busy quarter.
Having never been to Oxymoron before this was a try out, my partner and I had been in town and were enjoying the early Summer weather, why not be adventurous? After studying the menu and realising they had some good Vegan options we opted to...stay for a late lunch come early dinner. Albeit only for outdoor seating the venue looked beautiful, we were approached by a charismatic waiter and we sifted through the items.
First of course for drinks, my partner opted for a Shirley Temple and I went for the Homemade Lemonade as neither of us drink alcohol. When they arrived, the Shirley Temple looked quite impressive whilst mine was 95% ice and 5% what was advertised. Although it was tasting good I have to mention that.
Both my partner and I opted for the Vegan Conchiglie with Asparagus both White and Green in Coconut sauce. Which sounded rather nice, however when it arrived, it seemed the waiter had eaten half of it already, it was this miniscule amount at the bottom of the rather large pasta bowl, with a dribble of coconut sauce, now I have to give credit where credit is due, it tasted phenomenal and everything, what there was of it, tasted delicious. The Conchiglie was perfectly al dente, the Asparagus was delightfully crunchy with a vibrant fresh taste, the sauce was beautiful and herbal albeit a touch too thin.
However, this was very 80's, the idea of finer dining, plush surroundings, high prices, yet nothing much to show for it in terms of value. For €15 apiece, this was quite the rip off, it seems Oxymoron want to attract a certain clientele, such as Bertie the Banker, Tony the Tax Avoider and his wife Penelope Most Proper, yet even if bloated with the fat of the land in their wallets and offshore tax havens, the return for even that investment, should be a bit more than what we got. As other diners were onto deserts my partner remarked at how much smaller even those were, so we skipped.
The other problem was the service, one woman next to me had a problem with her order, yet after repeated attempts she couldn't get hold of a waiter for at least ten minutes, the waiter we had serving us was continuously with his back to the dining terrace, whilst chatting to the bar man inside and the second waiter was in and out so fast, it was akin to a game of Whac-A-Mole, and of course diners don't come equipped with tranquiliser darts and lassos.
Yes it is a wonderful city venue, neat and tidy and the food is skilfully cooked but with the perspective stuck in the upside down of the 1980's, which should remain in the movies and/or Netflix, not the mouse sized portions for lion prices.More
We wanted to start our evening in Berlin with cocktails in this nicely situated bar/restaurant in the city center. Ok we ordered 5 different cocktails, but there was much larger choice in the menu. We had to wait too long and reproached that this was...due to our choices. When paying we were moreover offended for not tipping enough. Nice place but poor service.More
I am writing thin is English although I am German because it is a touristic place.
Me and my husband had a reservation for 13:30, we came, stood upfront and one of the waiters saw us and told us where are table is.
we sat...for about 6-7 minutes without a menu, and then I saw one of the waiters looking at us and whispering to another waiter something while pointing at us, I thought to myself maybe feel bad for keeping us waiting for long.
Then the waiter came and told us "this table is reserved it is not yours" we were shocked, we told hit that we reserved and this is our table, he started arguing with us and we told him we spoke to the other waiter and he told us this is our sit. Instead of apologizing, he said "ahhh...why did you went to him and didn't go to me?" really?!
We weren't so exited with the fix menu so we ordered from the regular, the starter was actually good (Eggs Benedict) but the entrees were just plain bad.
I had the goat cheese ravioli, the sauce was separated and swam in oil, the Carbonara was grainy and weirdly sweet.
there are places with much better prices and much better food, really, don't wate your time here.More
Three of us went there for a late breakfast and what a delight it was.
The place is cavernous, huge, even baronial and is finely decorated and very pleasing to the eye.
We had a simple breakfast of coffee and eggs served by a well...presented, polite and good English speaking waiter.
The whole experience was short but memorable.
