As an overall experience, it was the best lunch out I’ve had in ages. The food was delicious and so authentic tasting. The staff were exceptional and it really did remind me that you can have a great meal out at an affordable price.
We had the lunch time pizza deal; a glass of wine with a whole pizza for £12 each. I ended up taking 2 slices of pizza away with me as it was such a good amount of food.
I can’t recommend this place enough and it has restored my faith in eating out in Shrewsbury. Nothing this good since Paolos…

Together with my wife we took our 2 young girls out for Sunday Lunch at Osteria. We hadn’t visited before but had one of the happiest and most joyful family meals we’ve had anywhere!
A relaxed, laid back vibe with some Italian rock and pop playing, it felt very Italian and very authentic from the start.
The lad who served us was an absolute superstar! I can’t tell you how good his service was. Attentive yet not over bearing and absolutely nothing was a problem for him. With the two girls, our ordering got a little complicated throughout the meal but he always checked he understood us before leaving the table and everything arrived exactly as we needed it. This lad needs protecting at all costs! Such an asset to the restaurant!
The girls shared a pizza, it turned up freshly made to order and almost the size of the table! We weren’t sure they’d finish it but devoured it in about 3 seconds!
My wife and I shared an antipasti board for 2, I thought it seemed pricey on paper but when it arrived you could see why it had the price tag - totally worth it. Great flavours, great produce!
We then had 2 main dishes which were absolutely packed with flavour and served piping hot, clearly fresh out the kitchen!
Osteria does not shy away when it comes to generosity and flavour! Such a fulfilling and lovely meal in so many ways!
Truly happy, comfort food. It put us all in such a lovely mood! Eating out with our kids can be tricky but this place put them in a relaxed place and filled them with delicious food!
We almost felt like we were on holiday!
This was a really special family meal and we can’t wait to be back!
Thank you to everyone!

Popped in on a Sunday, early evening without a reservation and was surprised to see it so quiet based on all the amazing reviews and news articles surrounding the recent chef awards.
We were having an impromptu birthday celebration (which we failed to mention incidentally, so no special treatment was expected). We chose to share a couple of bruschetta starters; mushroom and tomato/burrata. They were extremely tasty and just enough to tantalise our taste buds for what was to come.
For mains, we ordered belly pork, chicken, monkfish and a seafood spaghetti. We were each delighted with our choices, and also had a taste of each others. It was extremely difficult to choose a winner, but by a narrow margin the belly pork won. We also had a couple of desserts, a cocktail and a coffee, and along with several beers, wine and some soft drinks. The bill came to around £190 including an optional tip, which we were happy to pay as the food and service were lovely.
The only thing that could have made it better would have been a busier atmosphere, but I can’t deduct a point off the restaurant for people not recognising quality Italian food when it’s there for the taking…. however the lighting, music and charming staff made up for that. They did say they had been extremely busy the night before.
Thank you! We will be back.

Going to start here with the positives… the wine was fabulous, the pasta dish was probably the best pasta dish ever. However, this was eclipsed by my husband’s meal - he only wanted a small dish so opted for bread and olives with a side order of fries. The fries were stone cold and the olives mushy and the bread thin. The chef came round and we complained about the chips and all he did was apologise. We then complained to the waitress about the bread, olives and fries and she said she would sort something out for us. We were never offered a replacement. When the bill came everything was on there including the optional service charge. It was someone different who brought the bill and we explained we had already complained about the bread, olives and fries. He took it away and came back with the cost of the fries removed (not the bread and olives).
Additionally this appears to be a restaurant for families (it did resemble a crèche in there with kids running around and a whole family vamping on the piano!) Additionally dogs were also in there, which is not something we are keen on. Personally, for a couples night out, it wasn’t for us, though we are pretty sure it is a great place for families.
Unfortunately we will not be returning, mainly because of one of the dishes and the way our complaint was handled (and we are not normally ones to complain!) Having said that if you do go there we would highly recommend the pasta which is was genuinely homemade and tasted absolutely delicious!

The crass exterior to this setup should have been a red flag but still we went inside...big mistake :/
Having recently returned from a wonderful break in Italy we were craving some Italian food. Visiting lovely Shrewsbury, we read the reviews of the place and off we went.
Osteria inside it was not - gaudy wall paintings, cheap tables and chairs. One member of our party likened it to a cheap cantina. We thought it strange that a bouncer type female staff member was guarding the door during our visit.
In sum - menu has a preface that reads like war and peace.
The food, utterly awful, overcooked; my pasta was served in a dessert bowl, the slow braised ragout dish was awful...over salted, overcooked, resulting in pellet-like mince beef and pork. When we asked for salt and pepper for the other dishes we were given a lecture by a young staff member that we shouldn't need it as all food is expertly seasoned in the kitchen. Our food was not seasoned. He went off to hunt for salt and pepper at our insistence. We didn't finish our food, our plates were taken away without any query as to why we had left most of our food.
When we left the cantina we were immediately confronted by a member of staff (older chap, beard, Italian) standing outside the restaurant smoking and he proceeded to flick his finished cigarette on the pavement. Gross!
Conclusion:
1. We should have refused to pay for the awful food and settled payment for our drinks, however we just wanted out of the place, as one of our party members felt unwell after eating his meal and wanted to leave to return to our hotel. The bill was over £100....we felt we had met up with Sir Humphrey Kynaston, Shropshire's local highwayman!
2. The people eating in this 'establishment' are very, very easily pleased with the food that is served and likely do not cook at home and/or people are being paid to write inflated reviews.
We have eaten in establishments all over the the UK, USA and Europe and extensively in Italy, and this has to be the worst, yes, the worst food we have ever eaten.
Final point - we see the owner personally replies to reviews on Google. He does not take criticism well!

Dear Imaginary Guest,
So, your imaginary visit took place in October, and you chose to share your review on November 23rd (how quite fascinating!).
This has to be one of the most entertaining pieces I’ve read in ages and I'd love to engage in a meaningful conversation, but honestly, why waste this time?
You mentioned half a dish, a bill over £100, and a party that I can only assume exists solely in your imagination and soo much more.
You've dined in the UK, USA, Europe, and extensively in Italy, yet you’ve managed to write just two reviews, both in the UK, out of all those imaginary adventures. That’s quite a feat, isn’t it?
I take criticism seriously, especially when it’s delivered face-to-face. But you? You come off as rather bitter and sad 😊.
You want to critique my food? Go ahead, I can handle it. Not a fan of the canti...oops! The restaurant? That’s entirely your prerogative. However, I draw the line at disrespecting our real customers. You seem to find happiness only in crafting imaginary tales. Just another keyboard warrior. I genuinely feel sorry for you. Best of luck with everything! Take care! 🙏

We had quick meal here on Saturday eve. Food was great but our waitress was so rude it was almost comical. My hubby only wanted a starter Porco v2 bites and I had ravioli chiantigiana main and we ordered a bottle of wine.
The waitress said is that all your ordering and we explained that my husband had lunch out and sorry he was not that hungry. She then whipped the menu of the table like she was in a huff.
I had a desert and my husband wanted a grappa an Italian digestive , which apprantly they don't sell even though they have a grappa on the menu.
Our bill came to £69 I am really sorry if our order was to small. Not the best experience luckly we were in a good mood and decided not to let the waitress ruin our evening.
So suggest go hungry.

We were eating dinner with whole family and our experience is really bad, unfortunately. Staff treating us with superiority and haughtiness, they weee very inpatient /only 3 tables were occupied/.Carbonara was very average but pizza quite tasty. We paid over £130 for 3 carbonaras ,tiramisu and margerita pizza and wine and it’s the worst spent my money in restaurant in my life. I don’t know why the restaurant is rated such a high stars. I am disappointed.

Magdalena, I greatly appreciate your feedback. It took me a couple of days to locate your food order in the system, but I managed to find it: Table 22 on Sunday, July 21st at 7:55 pm. The waitress who served you was very friendly and promptly took your drink order in a professional manner.
When the waiter arrived to take your food order, upon hearing the request for 3 carbonaras, in accordance with company policy, he inquired if you had ever experienced a truly authentic Italian carbonara. At our establishment, we believe in the adage "prevention is better than cure." Our carbonara is prepared using traditional Italian methods, featuring fresh pasta, Pecorino Romano, Guanciale di Norcia, black pepper, and egg yolk. It stands apart from the standard "carbonara" dish found in 98% of inauthentic Italian restaurants.
The waiter felt compelled to mention this, despite its unusual nature, as most individuals have never experienced it before. In 30% of instances, customers opt for an alternative to carbonara due to its intense and robust flavor profile.
To maintain politeness and professionalism, we consistently inform customers who choose to order carbonara. If this communication made you feel as though you were being treated with superiority or arrogance, we sincerely apologize, as it was not our intention.
I wanted to inform you that in our traditional carbonara dish, we exclusively use Guanciale di Norcia, a specialty ingredient that only two restaurants in the UK incorporate. If you have any doubts, feel free to verify this information yourself. 😊
Regarding your bill, it amounted to £125.84, which includes an optional service charge of £11.44 that you opted to pay. Without the service charge, the total would have been £114.40.
The bill covers the following items: 3 servings of carbonara, 1 Margherita pizza, 1 bottle of sparkling water, 1 pint of coke, 1 dessert, and 1 bottle of wine. I also want to point out that although you did order a bottle of wine, it was the £40 option.
Do we value our patrons based on the fact that the majority, around 90-95%, of our customers at the Osteria comprehend and appreciate the culinary experience we offer?
However, there is always that remaining 5-10% who end up ordering £50 worth of food and £60 worth of drinks, only to later express dissatisfaction with the total cost.
At Osteria, our range allows you to dine for as little as £8 or as much as £150 per person. The choice is entirely yours, not ours. All prices are clearly displayed on the menu, and the responsibility for the cost of your meal lies solely with you. It's unfair to attribute your decision to us.
I must emphasize that throughout your visit, you were graciously attended to while dining and upon finishing your meal, and on both occasions, you graciously shared positive remarks. However, what prompted your transformation into a "keyboard warrior" a whole 10 days later?

Both the food and service is incredible. Staff are all super friendly and easy to talk to, they have great knowledge of the menu and create a really nice relaxed atmosphere. The food is both authentic and modern, the chefs’ ability to play with flavours is next level. This is an experience and not something you will get anywhere else. Highly recommend the Ox cheek risotto it’s amazing ! They’ve really captured a little piece of Italy. Full of heart and soul.

What a disappointment, nothing like it used to be in the old place, I understand you had to move but what has gone wrong…Poorly dressed waiters and waitresses who haven’t a clue, teach them the menu and how to serve would be a start. The authentic carbonara was not authentic at all I make a better one myself. Music playing was up to date, people want a taste of Italy, won’t be returning wish I had spoken to the owner or chef now, you may have bigger place but you’ve cut corners in all the wrong places.

I love the titles of this kind of review.
You should be honored, because of you, from now on i will give a head titles to all my response, and yours will be the first one. 🤌🏻👍🏻
CODSWALLOP.
Nothing like it used to be in the old place? By the amount of previous review left by you i can really tell how much do you know about the old place, you know that much about the old place that you only register on the 18/06/2023 around 19.26. just for this fantastic review, and this one only.... Im speechless, fantastico!!
Poorly dressed staff?? Our dress code is total black. Black trousers/skirt (long) black t-shirt/polo even black shirt.
Not too smart shoes. You expected tie and suits?? you are in the wrong place.
Apparently waiter and waitress dont have a clue? OMG!! Nobody knows nothing in this place.... INCLUDING THE ITALIAN CHEF WHO MADE YOUR CARBONARA!!! This comment of yours make me laugh. There are 3 tipes of waiting staff here.. And if you really were here you could have seen how they were divided.
If you do a fantastic carbinara at home that's absolutely great! Don't go for a meal and order something that you can easily make yourself!
Our authentic carbonara that you called not authentic is made of :
Guanciale di Norcia, Pecorino romano scorcia nera, Egg yolks, Black pepper
And love!
If this is not authentic, i cant do much for you sorry!
I really wish I could talk to you too, but unfortunately we are aware of your "issue" only after X amount of days, as nothing has be mentioned to us about carbonara or issue related to meals. And when i say nothing has been mentioned, i mean in a very very very long time!!
To be fair, im glad about your decision!
There is no space here at OSTERIA for people that lying on our faces then writing such as fantastic story about their "experience" (im still thinking that you are a troll or a scam)
We may had to cut corners true! But i will never cut corners on food and staff!!! As you should know by previous visit at the old place, we didn't change our standard, suppliers, or recipes!! But again, i really find this funny review of yours very dodgy!
By the way, you messaged me in private here on tripadvisor, and when I've asked info about your experience.. As response you deleted your private message???? Once again, seems to dodgy to be real.
Don't be just another keyboard warrior on our list.... 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Hopefully one day you can teach me how to make a proper carbonara will you? I'm always up for improvement!
In the meantime, i wish you all the best with the usual boring fake carbonara made with: cream, bacon, mushrooms, peas, garlic, Parsley, chicken, parmesan...
Gladly to have reviewers above and below yours that have actually been here and shared their experience..
All the best!

I have to say, I wish I had read some reviews before booking. I was tempted by the awards won and didn't think to research - that's my own fault. We went on Saturday evening at 7.45pm and the place was packed. I took this as a good sign but 90 minutes after arriving we were still waiting for our mains and the place was empty.
The staff are all very young and really don't want to be there. The restaurant is cold, so much so we put our coats back on and there is little to no atmosphere and although our starters were OK none of us enjoyed our mains.
I had the Carbonara which when I ordered the waiter reminded me was made of egg, was salty and not the kind you get as a ready meal. I loved this, it made me think I was going to get a great dish but the reality was it was bone dry, no sauce at all and just a bowl of cannelloni (which I thought was an odd pasta choice) with what I really think was bacon lardons rather than guanciale.
We did mention the wait time and the disappointing food to our waiter and his response was I'll get you some Limoncello - I had already seen that every other table got Limoncello at the end of their meals anyway. We paid and left but I couldn't recommend this place to anyone and I do wonder what has changed since they won their award as surely it must have been a lot better back then.
I strongly suspect they wouldn't win any awards now.

Called in for lunch with my son, as I'd seen the lunchtime deal on the board outside and heard the restaurant was award-winning. Having been to Italy and loving the food and culture, we have been searching for a genuine taste of the country in the area. We've finally found it.
As soon as we walked in, we received a warm welcome, and excellent customer service. My son chose a buffalo margherita pizza and I asked if I might have the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina as a main course. This was absolutely no problem at all. The food looked amazing and tasted even better. All ingredients were fresh. My son noticed the crushed tomato topping on his pizza and was delighted it had been "made properly". My gnocchi tasted just like the same dish I'd enjoyed in Sorrento. With Italian songs playing, Italian staff and superb food, we could just as well have been back in Italy!
So if you like friendly, attentive, professional service and you value high quality fresh produce and enjoy genuine Italian food, this is THE place to go. You won't find a better, more authentic Italian dining experience...possibly anywhere in the UK. We will be back for more. Thank you to everyone at Osteria.

It’s a sorry state of a affairs becomes a meal in between shopping on Saturday becomes your date night , but this was such an unexpected treat. Situated on the ever picturesque Mardol, the restaurant offers well priced, stunningly prepared meals, served by exceptional nice staff. If you live within say 20 miles , you’ll be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don’t take advantage of some top food in a great environment!

Osteria an Italian restaurant in top 5 of trip advisor restaurants in Shrewbury list. Walked from Prince Rupert hotel through olde worlde Shrewsbury high street to historic Mardol street. Interior is modern but lacking atmosphere. Staff are very helpful and obliging and I was asked many times if they could help me further during the course of my meal. Wine list was overpriced for the wines on offer. I baulk at paying £30 a bottle so I settled for a delicious lager similar to Peroni. I had a huge bowl of olives and bread to start(great)followed by a large pizza tasty and well cooked. I left a space for a dessert which was strawberry cheesecake and ice cream. An optional 10% service charge is added to the bill and the staff asked me if I was still happy with the charge. I would have left a larger tip the food was so good. All in 3 courses and two large beers including optional 10% service charge came to £41.A bargain.

Amazing as always.
Visited here once again with family and friends before I resume travelling.
The service first of all was excellent. Staff were friendly and polite and could have done more for us. It was also nice to see a sense of humour. Especially from the older gentleman behind the bar.
As for the food in my opinion it could not have been better! We shared an assortment of starters before the mains and whoever came up with the idea of putting ice cream on a plate of pork is a genius.
I had the lasagna with a side of truffle fries and it was out of those world. It may now be my new favourite dish! Finally the tiramisu with the ‘chocolate soil’ concluded the trifecta of excellent courses.
For a group of 8 the bill was well priced and justifiable for the quality of food we had.
A perfect send off at a perfect restaurant.
To all the staff thank you and I’ll see you again.

We visited at lunchtime and enjoyed the £8 meal deal, which included pizza and pasta choices plus drink. My husband’s pizza was served with a generous portion of fries and salad, and I’m told was very tasty indeed! I thought for the price it was fabulous value. My prawn and chilli pasta was also very tasty indeed, the sauce was delicious! We couldn’t resist puddings, and my tiramisu was one of the best I’ve had anywhere, including in Italy! My husband’s chocolate and caramel cake was also top notch. Service was very attentive and most helpful, we felt very well looked after. We commented to each other that we’ll now struggle to find another place in Shrewsbury that offers as good a lunch! On a side note, it’s so nice to have current Italian charts playing as background music (I’m not Italian but pretty familiar with Top 40 stuff, and hearing these artists not just on my Spotify was great!) Grazie and till next time!

Thank you for sharing your fantastic lunch experience with us! It sounds like you and your husband had a delightful time at our restaurant. Our £8 meal deal, including pizza, pasta, and a drink, is indeed designed to offer great value without compromising on taste.
We're thrilled to hear that your husband's pizza was accompanied by a generous portion of fries and salad, and he found it to be incredibly tasty. Your prawn and chilli pasta also received high praise, especially for its flavorful sauce. We take pride in ensuring our dishes are delicious and satisfying.
Indulging in desserts is always a treat, and we're delighted that both the tiramisu and the chocolate and caramel cake exceeded your expectations. It's an honor to be compared to the tiramisu you've had in Italy!
Our attentive and helpful service is dedicated to making sure every customer feels well taken care of. We're glad to hear that you appreciated the level of attention you received.
We're humbled by your comment that it may be challenging to find another place in Shrewsbury that offers as good a lunch as ours. It's a testament to the care and quality we put into our offerings.
Lastly, we're thrilled that you enjoyed the background music featuring current Italian charts. We believe it adds to the overall ambiance and helps create a truly immersive experience.
Grazie for your kind words and for choosing our restaurant. We look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable dining experience in the near future!
