From Henley-on-Thames take a short trip through the countryside, into the woods at Witheridge hill and you will find the warm picturesque 17th century pub, the Rising Sun. There is a large sunny garden at the front of the pub surrounded by stunning woodlands as well as ample parking. Rustic floorboards, open fires and original beams inside fill the place with character & charm, it feels just like home - somewhere you can relax, settle in and have a great time.
The food used to be pub food done very well. Now it's just very average. Veg either almost raw (which I liked) or so overcooked it is like school dinners (which is so 1970s retro). The rest - meh! together it needs to try much...harder.
Staff are super polite - just not that well trained.
e.g. £5 for one teacup of hot chocolate. Seriously? It just aint that good - zero ambience and it was quite cold inside.
Charge me more I don't care but make it good not deeply average please.More
Witheridge Hill at Highmoor Cross is a bit off the beaten track, but my ancestor came from there so we went there for a day trip. The staff at the pub were super friendly and the food was great. Its a Breakspears Pub so my...husband loved the real ale. I f you are in the area I would highly recommend it. The advantages over lunching at Henley on Thames were more peaceful and free parking. If you want to pop down to Henley its not far, but I would definitely eat here first.More
The service was excellent, staff couldn’t do enough for us. Wasn’t waiting too long for drinks and food even though they were busy. When the food came it was well presented and was amazing we both cleared our plates, couldn’t fault anything. Great evenings entertainment...with the open the mic night, which showcases quality local artists!!!
Also dogs are welcome as well!
Will be visiting again for sure! Highly recommendedMore
With a group of friends we went for Sunday lunch. Food choice and quality was very good and you certainly couldn't grumble about the portion sizes
But the enthusiastic and friendly service wasn't up to scratch. Half our drinks order was delivered but the other...half of the order didn't appear so we had to go chasing it. A tureen of gravy, together with two bowls of cauliflower cheese was put on the table about ten minutes before the meat was brought to us. The server didn't seem to see this as strange1
All in all we enjoyed our meal but poor service when the pub was quite quiet stops me rating this as excellent overall.More
My husband and I had an excellent Sunday lunch at The Rising Sun. the staff were friendly and helpful and the portions were very generous. It was very pleasant sitting in the garden with a glass of sangria.
The current management has put this pub up to the top of our favourite list again. We’ve eaten here a few times recently - as a couple, with a group of friends and even for my hen do. The food has always been spot on...but most importantly, the atmosphere and service is what every pub should aspire to. Simple things like calling to check if we wanted a table outside as the weather was going to be good! When planning my hen do, Kate was super helpful, enthusiastic and personable. She prepared a perfect sharing menu and made sure we were well looked after all evening. The staff were lovely - really attentive but not pretentious at all and we had the secret garden to ourselves. Can’t recommend this pub enough! We eat out a lot and what really stands out is their passion for what they do. Looking forward to spending many more happy times here :)More
The pub and surrounds were looking glorious as we came up the garden path for our Father's Day lunch. We were immediately looked after by the attentive and well trained young staff and a lovely tempo was maintained throughout our meal. The roast chicken and...roast pork options (best tasting pork I've had in a long time) came with all the usual accompaniments - excellent! The mussels were so fresh, with a finger licking garlic, white wine and cream sauce - my 91 year old father didn't speak throughout, he was enjoying his lunch so much. Added to that, he chose the banoffee ice cream sundae which topped off his special day. This is the second time we've eaten out recently at The Rising Sun, which also serves a fine SA Chenin Blanc and a well kept Brakspear Oxford Gold, and we will be back soon. Recommend a visit.More

Hi Michael, thank you for your enquiry. Yes we are dog friendly - we have a large beer garden, we provide water bowls inside and outside and have free dog treats available from the bar. We do not usually allow dogs into the main restaurant area however we do allow dogs in the bar area and also into the adjacent 'snug' area where there are tables for food service (from the main restaurant menu). Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you. Simon @ The Rising Sun, Witheridge Hill.
