A real pre Christmas treat during all the restrictions. Suite stunning and very comfortable, food amazing (a very talented young chef), staff very friendly and so nice to enjoy some luxury as well as being situated in a stunning part of Cumbria with scenic walks....Thank you.More

Exceptional on every level! This place certainly lives up to its reputation of excellence! Simply brilliant! From start to finish, each dish was lovingly prepared and done to perfection. The decor exuded northern harm and simplicity and food was exquisite yet not pretentious. I ordered...the mushroom soup and it completely exceeded my expectations. The bread was amazing to say the least. And the sea bream was also well done but my favourite was the mushroom soup in fairness. I will definitely be back.More

We were revisiting this place after having a great stay there last year so were a little disappointed to see that they seemed to have nothing but lip service to covid regs - the staff wore no masks and the Yurt we stayed in was...full of fluffy cushions and bits and bobs which cannot possibly all have seen sanitised between customers. When I mentioned my concerns about being served in the restaurant by staff not wearing masks and the need for them to lean over customers to put down hot plates the girls said 'is this the first time you've been out since COVID?' I hope she didn't understand how patronising she was but I think she did..... the yurt was lovely but I didn't subscribe to he outdoor shower and the stinky compost loo surrounded by rustling and shuffling undergrowth. I would also add that the menu was way more pedestrian than last year and I can only hope this is a temporary situationMore

We ate here a few nights ago on a stopover on the C2C hike. It was recommended by the landlady in our B&B. The locals just say that the food is quite good, so we were pleasantly surprised to find a well thought out menu...and delicious food. 5 star quality, I asked our waitress who the chef was and she said a chap called Scott Fairweather. One to watch?More

Wow - outstanding food. I have not tasted food that good for a long time. Me and my wife both had 3 courses and each one was fantastic. You can tell by the flavours and presentation that a lot of thought and precision had gone...into each meal to just make it a lovely experience. The staff were all very polite and helpful tooMore

Our first evening meal out since lockdown and it was well worth the wait! Very attentive staff as soon as you walk in, sanitiser everywhere, one way system in place, dining room tables well spaced out, we felt very safe and comfortable the whole time....The food was excellent, recommend the chicken live pate starter and the Lamb. Couldn't manage dessert - big portions. The whole experience was a feast for the tastebuds, different flavours that complimented every bite, So delicious, beautifully presented and I wish I could cook like that! We are very lucky to be quite local so will be back soon to sample the rest of the menu. A big thank you to all the staff and the Chef of course. Can't recommend it enough!More

We arrived for an early sitting for dinner on Sunday evening, served promptly, fabulous food (crab mousse, sea bream, lavender and peach mousse). One small glitch, having initially asked for the tandouri sauce to be provided 'on the side' I was told it would be...'around the edge of the plate which I agreed to 'as long as my food wasnt swimming in sauce'. When the meal arrived the sauce had been poured as if a gravy which meant I could not limit the amount I had. Disappointed , but not to the extent that I asked for another meal.More

We ate here recently on our way over to the Lake District and it did not disappoint. The service, food and welcome was great. We sat outside and there was lots of space in the beer garden for people to socially distance. Our meal was...delicious and we will definitely visit again on our next trip to the Lakes.More

We were staying overnight at the black swan and had a table pre booked for dinner . We had pre dinner drinks by the river where they have some yurts as part of the hotel . After taking our candlelit table in the window we...checked out the small but we'll put together menu . Our starters were chicken liver pate and goats cheese tart with marinated heritage tomato salad. For mains we chose lamb with roasted cauliflower and a raisin and pine nut dressing and pork glazed with mustard with buttery mash cabbage and black pudding all the dishes were delicious and well presented . We didn't have deserts and with hindsight we would have only had the mains as the portions are generous . The staff were excellent throughout our stay . The only thing we might change was to eat in the lovely bar instead of the restaurant which was also very nice .More

We dined at the Black Swan on Wednesday evening, taking advantage of the government's 'Eat out' scheme. Living quite locally, we have dined there many times before and have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We had to wait at the front door before being...shown to our table in the restaurant, having sanitized our hands. Looking through to the 'back bar' area, this appeared very crowded with customers, visitors and dogs. We were alarmed and disappointed that the seating availability in the restaurant (which is not too large) did not appear to have been reduced, and we therefore found ourselves sitting less than one metre from others at adjoining tables. Most places where we have dined in recent weeks have drastically reduced the number of dining tables to allow lots of space between customer groups. Bearing in mind that the majority of diners that night were residents and visitors from other parts of the country (and indeed perhaps from overseas), it was somewhat worrying to be placed in such close proximity to strangers for a couple of hours. At other dining establishments we have visited since lockdown eased, serving staff have had to wear face coverings. This was not in force at the Black Swan. Mondays to Wednesdays will naturally be very busy during August whilst the scheme continues. Although we enjoyed our food, and the service was good, we must report that we felt very uncomfortable on Wednesday evening and will be reluctant to return until better days return.More
