Delicious Ravioli, Wonderful Service

We dine at Buona Sera every time we stay in Devonport. This year it seems better than last year. Wonderful service from 2 young men. We shared a caprese salad and my fresh steaming hot ravioli was delicious. My husband enjoyed linguini with calamari. Lovely evening.

Tasty Food and Relaxing Atmosphere

When in Auckland make sure to take the ferry to Devonport. Just 15 minutes and you'll find a lovely "village street" with interesting shops and a handful of nice restaurants. We opted for an Italian dinner at the "Buona Sera" and we sure spent a nice evening there. Our young waiter was a bit shy but all the more charming. We liked the interior - a mixture of brick and wood, plants, modern and nostalgic decoration. We had a wonderful garlic flatbread plus the veal parmigiano and a risotto marinara (regrettably no room for dessert) with a Marlborough Pinot Noir. A relaxing and tasty "getaway" from bustling CBD...

Amazing food and service

The fish of the day was snapper. It came covered with red sauce and shrimp, accompanied by roasted veggies and potatoes. Everything was great and the sauce was amazing. Our other meal was the gnocchi that melted in our mouths. On top of that, we got great service and wine recommendations. Best meal on a two week trip to New Zealand.

Ask to see steak before it’s cooked.

It’s always been a great local, the staff are very friendly, the space is charming, and the food generally better than par. It fell down badly when we ordered 2 steaks, one Pepe Verde and one Rossini, both ordered as “premium” eye fillet. What arrived was eye fillet tail, butterflied, but into very thin steaks, which is a fail for that end of the tenderloin. Eye fillet has a head, which is mainly used for tied roasts of 4-6 inches, as it gets thinner, it’s known as the tournedos, usually sliced thickly for the classic “high” eye fillet steak, notably the Mignon.. Lastly, the very thin tail, which can be butterflied, but needs to be sliced quite thick. We got the tail, sliced thinly. Fail. You could argue I should have been specific on which cut, however it was listed as premium, however when I noted to the waiter it was not really premium eye fillet, I got an aggressive chef. Quite bizarre. It’s disingenuous at best to list tenderloin tail as “premium” eye fillet, and the reaction was very misplaced indeed. Perhaps not the first time he’s been called out on it. The rest of the food, and in fact the cooking of the steak was good. I’d suggest you ask to see the meat cut before it’s cooked. Footnote- The Chianti Classico was very raw, worth avoiding, Overall, given this and value for money, you’d be much better off going across the road to Portofino, who are consistently outstanding, with fabulous staff, and with a much better wine list.

Great Italian in Devonport Village

Top service, authentic cooking, great atmosphere, what more could you want. The key to Buona Sera is consistency. Do try the Calamari, and or the Fillet Mignon.

Wonderful dinner and service

We had beef steaks in white wine and mushroom sauce with roasted potatoes and vegetables and they were superb! Staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was intimate, peaceful and cosy!

Disappointing this time.

We have been fans of Buona Sera for years and have even driven from Takapuna to pick up takeaways in the past. On this occasion we had a family birthday dinner of 8 but left disappointed. The service was friendly and efficient but the food was pretty ordinary. The fish of the day was well overcooked and the pasta and gnocchi dishes were all lacking in flavour. It was a real shame as we have been regulars in the past.

Great Vibe!

We shared a pizza and Caesar salad. The food came quickly and we were lucky to get the last table. The restaurant was pumping, all tables occupied. Wait staff are friendly.

Hit the Spot

I enjoyed the Spaghetti Allo Scoglio. The dish was nice and spicy, and had many good flavors. I wouldn't say the scallops were cooked to perfection, but they didn't need to be, the spices and other ingredients made for a yummy dish.
