Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This should be highlighted as a fabulous stop. The owner is fun and a great host. Whilst in conversation he heard it was my friends birthday so brought out a banana choc chip muffin with a candle on. The toilet is as clean as can be. Coffee great. Now. The filled rolls he did for the 8 of us were the best ever. Freshly made to order and we enjoyed them further down the track. Great to see such service. Top marks.

We stopped here after departing Ophir in the morning and planned a pit stop along the way. Lovely cafe operating in Lauder, adjacent to the Otago Rail Trail. The cakes, coffee and tea were excellent and delivered to your table with a smile. We chose to have fresh rolls made for lunch later on the trail, these are made to order and sealed in bags which is handy when your riding. Gardens were in bloom in Spring and we were lucky to have a clear blue sky to enjoy.

This is truly a very special cafe out in country, beside the Central Otago Rail Trail. I was keen to go to the cafe after reading the Otago Daily Times newspaper, that it won a people's choice award. So we went for lunch. It was delicious. I can highly recommend the bacon and egg pie with salad and the chocolate fudge cake. The chocolate fudge cake was scrumptious. I am guessing that it was made from a traditional recipe. The tea for two came in a teapot with real tea leaves. The English Breakfast tea was well appreciated. Thanks to the friendly ladies for the lovely lunch.

Popped in to this oasis in the middle of nowhere while cycling the rail trail. The owners welcomed us in & had such awesome humour. Being a vegan & vegetarian couple a lot of cafes/restaurants must see us as painful but not these lovely hosts. They couldn’t have been more pleasant & accommodating. HUGHLY rate this tiny treasure on your exquisite rail trail experience. Cheers guys 😘

Our cycling group of five arrived around 9 30am and were treated by superhosts with super breakfast and coffee. Nothing was a problem for these two and the visit gave our day the kicker it needed. When we left several large cycling groups were arriving who were all being treated the same way. Gorgeous location....take your time and enjoy.

So here we are on the Rail Trail and come to Lauder Station and here's this gorgeous Cafe packed with fresh home baking and everything to tempt you. I went for a sausage roll and being the Sausage Roll Queen I have to say this is feginitely the best I've ever had. I quietly dissected it to see what our chef here put in it. He told me his 'loose' recipe, but my lips are sealed. Think fennel, cumin, pork for starters. They are wholesome and big. The coffee was a perfect flat white. The toilet was spotless and had very nice classy toiletries and a little vase of flowers. Highly recommend you stop in to the Lauder Stationside Cafe whether riding your bike on the Trail or driving past. Thankyou to all the staff, we appreciate a really good cafe.

WHAT A FIND! Slightly off the main trail & road, the middle of nowhere (except for Otago rail trail!) with the nicest staff, best coffee & food to die for, how is it that no one told us that this is an absolute must~stop?! Try the toasted cheese (& onion) rolls ~ apparently widely referred to as Southland sushi: perfect comfort food & cycling fuel on a chilly morning.

In the middle of January we, a family of four (including an 11 year old), were biking in driving rain and wind in only 8 degrees. Despite all our wet weather gear we arrived soaked at the Stationside Cafe. The owners kindly took our gloves and put them in the drier. The food and drink was awesome, the hospitality outstanding. Board games were offered, and advice given for the rail trail. After an hour we left, fuelled to tackle the wind and rain again glowing from the warmth of both the food and company. If you are cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail, or driving past, there is no better cafe. Don't miss it.

Second day into the Otago Rail Trail journey and after less than an hours cycling we stopped at the Stationside cafe simply because it was there! What an amazing little place! taking full advantage of the fact that there was little else between Lauder and Oturehua 22kms further on, the cafe offers a service whereby it will pack food for you to take on the journey. We had a good coffee and muffin to eat at the cafe and then bought a gourmet sandwich and a muffin each to take away-the sandwich was big enough for two of us to share. Great surroundings and i love the entrepreneurship of the owners who have set out to service the requirements of cyclists using the trail.

This was our first stop on a wet morning on the Otago Rail Trail after leaving our overnight stop at Omakau and was thus very welcome. Magic food and the big sandwich they made for me to take away for lunch was just bliss. I'm told the coffee was really good but I wouldn't know about that side of things. Very pleasant hosts with a bit of humour and good cheer.

We stopped here on the rail trail for coffees and got some cabinet food “to go” to eat later. Coffee was great and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. It was a clear hot day when we visited so we’re seated outside .... lovely atmosphere. You must stop in here if you’re doing the rail trail.

In a sudden hailstorm during the last 10 minutes of our bike ride with 9 kids and 3 adults who were soaking wet and shivering, Darryl and Helen were lifesavers who reopened their cafe and provided towels and blankets along with yummy warm drinks and goodies. Even tumbled dried some of our wet gear. Went above and beyond, and we were so thankful for your hospitality!!!!

We stopped off here on our way to Alexandra and we’re warmly greeted. Great coffee and lovely basil pesto savoury. My hubby had a homemade sausage roll that he’s still raving about! Great wee spot.

One of the best corn fritters (with bacon and salad) that I have ever had - possibly because I was so hungry from a bike ride. Others had toasted sandwiches which they said totally hit the spot. Brownies and muffins also great. A great outdoor eating area plus a very nice clean toilet!

So good to see all the rave reviews about this cafe because they totally echo my own thoughts. We last visited two years ago and raved about the food and the same goes for our latest visit, The sad thing is that two years ago the place was packed, last week because of Covid, there were less than half a dozen of us-they\ owners deserve so much better. The coffee here is great and the scones and muffins superb. Its just a lovely place to relax after a hard ride and to enjoy the surroundings in the sunshine. It truly is a must-stop place both for ORT users and for locals.
