Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Off the beaten track but worth a visit. Full of memorabilia from the district, this place has atmosphere. Meet the friendly locals and sit out on the deck over the mangroves whilst enjoying a coldly and a basket of tasty crisp hot chips.

A local person recommended the Gumstore Bar and Grill when he learned we would be hiking in the area. It is perhaps worth a short stop. The decor is overwhelming in some ways: marine motifs, stuffed fish trophies, bric-a-brac, almost museum like. We only had time for drinks, which were nothing special.

Being on a boat, we moored near Totara North Wharf. An easy 20 imin (1.5km) walk took us along a shady road, past The local museum and old Timber Yards.
Gumstore Bar and Grill opens about 12.30. What a delightful atmosphere! Stepping back in time to quiet, laid back tranquility, enhanced by the surrounding environment. Inside , The Gumstore is panelled in rich, warm native timbers. To add to the Olde Worlde atmosphere, the upper walls are lined with display cabinets of Gum Digger history and, Fishing Industry History. Looking higher up the walls one is awed by the work of An expert Taxidermist who has skillfully preserved Prize Specimens from the Sea.
A good pool table, nice music, delicious fresh fish, great chips. Local staff and Local patrons make this an interesting place to visit for those who dare to engage.
These delights do not rely on Coffee.
We will be back.

These people should not be running a pub. The woman serving was rude, unhelpful, and unfriendly. The toasted sandwich was good, the ‘flat white’ almost undrinkable, with dozens of bubbles on top of weak coffee. There was no option of trim milk or decaf coffee. On a bleak day it was actually colder inside than out and it would have been nice to have had the fire on which was being set up as we walked in. But it was not to be. Not only that, the toilets and surrounding area smelt strongly of sewage. This quaint little pub surrounded by so much history deserves so much better.

Went in today to try it for the first time. The bar manager was beyond rude. I’ve worked in hospitality for over 20 years and she was one of the rudest people that I’ve come across. She clearly didn’t want customers walking in the doors. We will never go back. We made the trip to try the place too.

This place could do with a face lift, new menu and most of all new staff - unfriendly, rude, unwelcoming not sure why they are there they certainly don't appear to want to be there. Such a shame as this was once a thriving business- move on if you don't want to be there and lease it to someone who does

We live in Northland and had visitors from overseas so after a long drive we stopped here. Our intention was to have a bite to eat and drinks.
The pub is in an historic building with plenty to look at inside on the walls. When we entered we were the only party inside with another 4 people sitting in the outside seating area. The woman behind the bar was writing, did not look up or greet us in any way. We stood at the bar for a good 2 minutes before she lifted her head and scowled at us! We should have left there and then but we ordered drinks passed on the food after this welcome! My friend asked if she minded if she took photos inside. Was advised Yes! no photos allowed inside look at the notice on the wall over there!
Hadn't n seen it amongst the artifacts (junk) all around. She was so rude and as New Zealanders we were very embarrassed. No where have we ever had a welcome!!!! like this. We sat outside amongst the detritus of a birthday party long over we assumed as most of the balloons had gone down and drank up quickly and left. We will never go there again and suggest you try the brilliant bar & bistrot at Whangaroa Harbour just down the road. Good food and great welcome!
