Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Driving from Waiouru to the Wairarapa I ran out of petrol at Mangaweka having forgot to fuel up at Taihape. The café front-of-house employee kindly messaged the local community asking if anyone could assist, and a 'yes' reply came in within ten minutes. The gentleman turned up with a jerry can and around 5 litres of 91, and all he sought in return was a coffee and mashmellows - and we made a new friend sitting in the sun having a chat. We also purchased a jar of the cafe's homemade 'The Dukes of Sandwich" beetroot chutney. I can't recommend the café and community enough :)

I was heading from Wellington to the Waikato this past weekend and stopped in on both the way up and way down ...it's in a great spot that won't slow down your travel time as its right on your journey and roadside . The place is nicely cooled on even the hottest day and the owners and staff know hospitality . The menu is simple and not overloaded with choices to bog you down . I ordered the ' Dukes Burger ' each time and each time was epic ! Everything a good burger should be. ..great bun...good sauces ..meat pattie well seasoned and cooked and great filling ..fries were lovely crunchy and golden and the aeoli and ketchup soooo good. To top it off I needed coffee and I'm happy to say this was outstanding too ..strong , not bitter and well made .. Every journey north I do will go through the Dukes Roadhouse and I suggest you do to !

Usually on a drive through rural NZ we are lucky to get weak coffee and a half warm pie. This place is the exact opposite. Delicious, healthy and filling snacks and meals, and great coffee. Friendly staff and atmosphere. We will stop again.

We were heading home from Turangi to Upper Hutt and needed to stop somewhere along the way for a bite to eat and a coffee. We were originally going to stop in Taihape, however decided to continue on to Mangaweka as we’d see The Duke’s Roadhouse on our journey up and after checking out reviews thought it was a good idea. We were acknowledged and greeted as soon as we came in the door. There’s a blackboard menu and cabinet food. As it was about 11am we decided to do an early lunch and both ordered the beef burger, we both added bacon and my partner added an egg. We also ordered a bowl of fries to share. Our drinks order was two large extra hot lattes. Our coffees came out and were extra hot and it was really nice coffee. Not long after our meals came out and we both polished off our burgers and the fries - again really nice food. When we left we bought two cheese scones to have later as they looked so good. With having a big lunch the cheese scones went down well that night for dinner with a cup of tea. If you’re looking for a good place to stop to enjoy good food and drink then The Duke’s Roadhouse is the spot..

We stopped for the EV charger but would return for the food. A generous late breakfast/early lunch after leaving Auckland was ideal. Truly excellent, generous pancakes with bacon, a fruity red sauce, home-preserved peaches and sour cream. OMG. The service was helpful and friendly, the place was clean and the staff helpful and welcoming. The jars of preserves lining one wall was testament to a chef making things from scratch. No WiFi was only slightly disappointing, but no big deal. An ideal stop on a North Island roadie.

A wonderful addition to the SH1 road trip. Excellent original cooking and baking, first rate coffee (no need to explain what a dry cappuccino is here) and an array of tempting preserves to take away. Try the brisket hash with homemade chilli oil. Really nice young local proprietors too, who deserve credit not only for the food they produce but for the courage of their investment. Gems like this deserve public appreciation, so stop, sample and smile.

This was recommended by family We stopped for lunch today while travelling north The menu and cabinet good food looked and sounded so delicious it was hard to choose.we had a reuben sandwich with all housemade ingredients-sourdough, brisket, sauerkraut, pickle. The best reuben we've ever had. Also the cauliflower with salad, hummus and flatbread was delicious. Coffee was strong and hot. Expect to find everything you would expect to find at a roadhouse except everything is housemade, with a modern touch by a chef who knows what good food is. We look forward to visiting again on our next road trip

Gorgeous food and coffee, lovely cozy fires and fresh decor. Plenty to love here. Cabinet food is attractive and menu has all the brunch and lunch essentials as well as some surprises. The vegan burger was awesome. We'll definitely return

I am a keen motorcyclist. I often stop in or even specifically take a ride from Wellington for a properly good coffee and a bite to eat at the Dukes Roadhouse. They do a really good job and have courage to set up and run a business in the sticks. Sometimes I even bring friends along for lunch. The service and food are always good. Good old fashioned pies made on site as well. Some great riding and scenery to be had in the Rangatiki River Valley too. Highly recommended 😉

A perfect spot for a pooch pitstop, made even better by one of the best cheese scones I’ve ever had - and I’m a connoisseur. Properly toasted and crunchy with real butter … almost worth a daily commute from the capital for. Good coffee, my husband had a great mince and cheese pie, and our two dogs had a sunny break on the grass. This will definitely be our SH1 go-to from now on.

Great place to stop, delicious homemade cabinet food and plenty of choice on the blackboard menu. Very friendly staff and freshly picked Mangaweka asparagus for sale in season. Quick service, will be our stop of choice on SH1 in the central North Island
