Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were staying at the Tapawera hotel units. Unfortunately the hotel is now closed to locals and the public. Only guests staying at the hotel can eat there. There were only 4 of us for dinner so lacked a pub like atmosphere Meal and desert were delicious

So we stayed here one night while cycle touring. It looks closed at the moment while they’re renovating but round the back, the units are still open and the bottle store is running. They have adapted the restaurant just now so they will still feed guests. The menu is small but the food is decent. Suzy is the manager I think. She is a star. She made us very welcome. Lent us a multi tool to adjust one of our bikes. Then gave us a private tasting of the locally brewed beers before dinner. For breakfast, you pick your menu in advance and take your food back to the unit the night before so you can make your breakfast in your own time in the morning. I think it will be great when it’s fully operational again but I think they’re doing really well to accommodate guests and keep it going just now. The only negative I have to say is the bloody security light which must be motion sensitive and was going on and off ALL night….like every 20 seconds!!

We took two vans out from our retirement village in Richmond and had the most superb, plentiful afternoon tea very tasty savouries potato top/mince and mince pies, sausage rolls and chocolate cake which others had. Drinks were as ordered mine was cappuccino with cinnamon quite strong asked for more milk got it with a smile enough for two others and then it was excellent. We had enough food over to take back to the village for other residents as a treat and were given little boxes to put it in, again with a friendly helpful smile. All good well done staff!!

The food was not great. Service was friendly but it took over an hour for fish and chips. The chips were cold and not salted despite asking them to be. Fish was alright but I wouldn't order that again.

Stayed one night whilst cycling GTT. Had a plate of nachos in the afternoon and that was very good. For the evening meal we both had the roast dinner. Bad choice. Gravy was watery and tasteless, potato was like reconstituted mush, the frozen peas and corn was unappetising and the meat was chewy. Should have had fish and chips as that looked good

The service was almost none existent. Our meals, 4 from the specials menu, took almost 90 minutes to arrive in a restaurant that had very few patrons. The hot pot was anything but hot, the meat chewy and vegetables overcooked and dry. The soup was also luke warm and the chicken salad dish inedible. Our accommodation was very basic.

Hotel was booked for one night as part of the Great Taste Cycle Trail. However the place was closed on arrival late afternoon. Eventually a member of staff arrived to show us to our room. Room was basic but clean although no shower toiletries (body wash, shampoo etc) are supplied. Just a small bar of soap, which is hardly appropriate after 6 hours of cycling. The staff member then informed us that they were closing the hotel for the night so they could have a night off. Therefore no food or bar available at all. This was not mentioned at time of booking. There are no alternatives in the area so it was packets of chips and biscuits for dinner. We were not alone, as there were other cyclists and contractors staying that night who were also in the same situation. WIFI was advertised but not available. Overall a stay I would never recommend, unfortunately there are no alternatives in Tapawera.

Stayed here on night 2 of the Tasman Taste Trail. There are 8 ensuite units out behind the pub. They are modern and clean and just what you need. It looks like 2 of them could sleep 4 and the rest are doubles. You can not book on line but need to call to book. The pub is right in the town with a Four Square next door. The locals are very friendly and chatting over a beer is a pleasure at the end of a day cycling. The pub offers meals and they are delicious. The steak was the best ever as was the Chatham island Blue cod. Great value. Can't recommend it enough. It is a hidden gem.

We stayed at the hotel for one night while cycling the Great Taste Trail. The units are behind the hotel. Small but clean including bathroom. Small kitchenette with basic breakfast. Double bed. Restaurant has pub meals. Fast, efficient and friendly service. This place will do well with the development of the Great Taste Trail. Worth supporting.

Nice clean rooms well equipped with small kitchen area. Continental Breakfast provided in room. All the staff were exceptionally nice and helpful even allowed us to use the washing machine. Found a lovely school pool open for a swim after our hot cycle here. There is a pub restaurant and bottle store on the premises and 4 square next door no need to go any further.

Great meal served by friendly staff. Good size portions and a choice of specials. The white bait fritters were delicious.

Had a wonderful morning tea for our bus group of 31. Yummy sandwiches, savouries, muffins etc. and a lovely hot drink. Friendly and efficient service. The hotel was warm and inviting with the fire going. Great value.

called in because we were passing through and so glad I did. The bar is something out of the eighties, large, open and more or less featureless but has a good range of beers and wines. However the restaurant is it's gem. An impressive menu for such an out of the way place and the standard and amount of food served exceeds many in-town expensive eateries. Credit to the chef(s). Will definitely make this a stop in the future.
