Came by this restaurant for lunch while passing through to the beach. We ordered their seafood baskets and was told it would be quite a wait as it was a busy time of the day. So we went over to the park across the street...for a walk. Not long later they came over and called us in (very friendly service!). The portions for our seafood basket was quite generous. Fish and mussels could be fresher though but everything else was nice. You could dine-in or takeaway. We had an ice cream each for dessert - kiddie scoop for $1. Couldn't believe the generous mountainous scoop of an ice cream. Overall generous portions and very friendly service.More

What you expect from a perveyor of food in a quaint place like Kawhia. Having driven 100 kms to show my wife this cute coastal town , we decided to have a meal at the supposed excellent cafe called Rusty Scnapper , you could excuse...my surprise on entering the premises at 3.40 pm to be told “ we’re shut” despite the on line advice that they were open till 6 pm. Don’t bother going to Kawhia cause the locals don’t want you !!!!!More

Got the burger meal, simple fresh ingredients (patty, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, cheese, fried onion) cooked perfectly; and the BEST hot chips ever! Like actually served HOT, perfectly crunchy on the outside and hot soft potato on the inside. The only downside to this meal was...having too many perfect hot chips so there was no room to fit one of the massive ice creams we saw other people getting while we were there.More

Nice little cafe. We just had drinks. Friendly and prompt service. Good coffee and the thick shake was fantastic.

We had a quick lunch here and found it to be very good. The food was good and served quickly by friendly helpful staff. What more could you want? They had a small gluten free choice which was very helpful. Also, the fish and chips...looked a lot be a lot better than the local fish and chip shop.More

We dined at the Rusty Snapper and really enjoyed it. The staff were super friendly and meal portions were big and well priced! The icecreams were HUGE!! Coffee was great, we were very pleasantly surprised. It looks a little run down, but it's charming in...its own way.More

We recently visited Kawhia for the first time and really liked the quaint little place. We found this large cafe for lunch, sat outside and enjoyed a good meal of potato wedges (a massive bowl !) , toasted sandwiches and coffee. Our food and beverage...was very good indeed and our only regret was that I ordered the large plate of potato wedges which was very large indeed (a small plate would definately have sufficed) ! The service was good although a bit on the slow side. All in all we had a very good lunch and would certainly call to this eatery again if we ever visited Kawhia again. Sadly we did not synchronise our visit with the New Year`s Day `whale-boat racing` although we did get a bit of a guided tour around the boat shed housing the fabulous old boats and we also had a very interesting look around the Kawhia Museum.More

Get there early to score a great pie. Good great ice creams. Coffee seems to rely on who is making it unfortunately.

This place may have nice food but do not have their coffee. It was tasteless and watery. One thing they need to remember if you say you are a cafe get your coffee right.

This establishment is casual understated dining with tasty breakfasts, enormous ice creams, and delicious coffee (made with love) - service with a smile, and real down to earth friendly accommodating staff - always a pleasure visiting!
