Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This restaurant is located in an urban area a few blocks inland from the beach district. No ocean views or many tourists. Very popular with locals, expats and snowbirds. Large combination plates of grilled items can easily be shared. Good prices and credit cards accepted. TV's and occaisonal live music.

Best meal of our trip so far. Service excellent. Vibe energetic. And the food!!! Also great value - 4 drinks, the loco, 2 sirloin tacos, queso normal, vegetarian quesadilla, chicken quesadilla, and extra order of pico to go… about USD $25. A rotation of local musicians playing on the street outside restaurant (bring a few small bills to tip if you want), street parking ($1/hr) and free parking for a few cars behind restaurant. The place was packed (mostly locals so you know it’s good) even at 4pm on a rainy Tuesday but wait for a table was short. Go!!!

If you visit Playa del Carmen, do not miss this. The specialty is the Taco Pastor, which is slow cooked pork which is carved in open view. It's hard to describe how tasty it is. And it's cheap! I also had a sirloin taco, also very good.

Great fast friendly service, awesome flavors and price!
We had 5 different types of tacos and a skirt steak platter, also the ranchero beans and 6 ice cold beers.
Our party of four ate until full, and our bill was under $40us dollars!
This is a stop NOT to be missed, so glad we stopped in on the recommendation of a local on where to get good authentic food.
He was right!

We went to El Fogon after asking a hotel employee where would he take his family to eat in his days off. He recommended El Fogon and we are happy he did! The restaurant is very basic, but clean. At the time we went ( on a Tuesday evening during Covid) we were the only tourists and the place was full of locals.
The menu is in Spanish only but the waiter translated it for us. The tacos and guacamole are to die for! Their margaritas are huge, and I mean huge and not watered down ( be careful loll).
All in all, 2 adults and a teenager ate and had drinks , all for about $20.
We cannot wait to go back in 2 months.

We just finished our dinner at El Fogon and it was the best, authentic Mexican food we have had all trip. The food is soo good we stuffed ourselves till we could eat no more. The portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable (even cheap). Thomas was our server and he was fantastic - fast, efficient and very helpful. This place is well worth the 10 minute walk from the over priced, over crowded, mediocre food places on 5th Ave.

We were in Playa Del Carmen for the day recently. While shopping on 5th Ave., we asked a local about the best restaurants, were that the locals liked to go, not the tourists. El Fogon was the first place mentioned, and was recommended for tacos. We were so happy we tried the place. Early afternoon, mid-week, just after the place opened, and the place was hopping, not just locals, we were obviously not the only turistas who had heard about the place, and there were many repeat diners.
The staff was great, super friendly; service was perfect, attentive but not intrusive. We received the complimentary dish of salsas, radishes and limes, and we ordered guacamole to begin the meal. It was fantastic. We also sipped on top shelf massive margheritas, which were also terrific.
For lunch we tried the sirloin taco and the "Taco Loco," both were delicious. The Taco Loco was a massive burrito with bacon on top, filled with all the various meats available on tacos. Awesomeness! All of the salsas were outstanding, but our favorite had to be the green super-hot salsa. The meal was great, easily a 5-star lunch in a neighborhood taqueria in PDC. Highly recommend!

We ducked in here for a quick bite to eat. As Australians, we don’t speak much Spanish but I’d recommend learning a few words because they’ll look after the rest once you give it a go. We had the beef and chicken tacos, they were simple but so so so delicious. Best food we had of the trip so far, and really really cheap. They also gave us free cactus and side salad, along with three salsas to add to our meals. We’re going back to try a few more dishes before we leave PDC. Huge cocktails too, for really cheap prices.

Looking for the best pastor tacos In town? Look no further, this are definitely it. We are people who live locally and have been to this place with just about all our visitors and this is definitely a must. You also try their taco loco with is a big fat burrito with all sort of meats and cheese, it even comes with a chunk of beacon. Try with a bit of the red hot sauce, just a tiny bit though!

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant when we are in Playa -- it is not a tourist trip, but rather a place where locals gather. My stomach is touchy, but I have never had a problem with the food here. The Taco Loco and the tortas are great, and we love the charros frijoles, which we call "bean soup."

Playa del Carmen is a completely messed up town; all the charm that ever existed is destroyed by ugly hotels that leave only a couple of meters of ‘beach’, ugly, loud shopping streets etc. The only reason to visit Play del Carmen is the very good, authentic restaurant Fogon for a really very good taco. For the rest, get out of the probably most depressing town of the region as soon as possible..

I had the most incredible dining experience at El Fogon! I decided to try the whole fish Belizean Creol. The food and service were beyond amazing - I was truly impressed. If you ever find yourself in San Pedro, make sure to treat yourself to a meal at El Fogon for a taste of authentic Belizean cuisine!

Amazing! Super fast service and such great food. A group of 8 enjoyed a nice meal here. We all agreed the pork with pineapple was such a treat. We had to wait for a short time outside but not long. Definitely the top three place we ate at in playa del Carmen

Everything was great ! The food was unbelievable. I had the Taco Loco which’s a huge Burrito with bacon on top. I am not a Mexican food fan but this is the best food ever. The sides of Mexican Salso, hot sauces were excellent. The staff are unbelievable. We had to wait a few minutes to get in . By the ime we left, about 4:30 in the afternoon there was about 15 people waiting o get in .
Te Tao Loco could have been shared by 2 it was so big.

Tried several Mexican restaurants in Playa and Fogon is my favourite. The prices are low but the quality of the food is exceptional. The place is simple but nice and the staff are very friendly and attentive. I stayed in Playa for 2 weeks and probably went here 6 or 7 times... Sometimes twice in a day! Those pastor tacos... Dios mio!
