A unique, memorable and flavorful experience. We had a taste of Chef Daniel's culinary talents on a FlavorTeller food tour. Our appetites were whetted and we wanted to explore more of Daniel's creations so we arranged to come for a "tasting." Reservations are required so when we returned we had to ring the bell to be admitted to the cozy and tasteful interior. Our meal consisted of 7 distinct courses which ranged from an incredibly flavorful cheese ball to tender octopus. Chef Daniel explained each course's composition and preparation in passionate and rapid (and occasionally hard to understand for these old ears) English which created great anticipation for each taste sensation. My husband, not a big drinking man, enjoyed each of the 3 mezcal cocktails and declared them fantastic. Dessert was incredible; one of the most beautiful and delicious sweet creations ever to be consumed. Daniel made sure we weren't too full to be able to appreciate each successive course. This was the most expensive meal we have ever eaten but it was a gastronomic investment well spent.

This restaurant is not to be missed. Chef Daniel has done an excellent job of combining the flavors of various regions of Mexico to create flavor explosions! The food presentation is very artistic and for the care and quality with which each dish is prepared it is a great value for the money. We shared 3 dishes, the Dorado Tiradito was a bit spicy but the fish was very tender and the sweetness from the passion fruit was awesome. Our second dish was the Conchita Pibil Sopes with super tender chunks of pork with just the right amount of spice and smoke. The piece de resistance was the Pulpo in a dark mole. Chef Daniel makes the mole himself and it is the best I've had! Smooth, a little spice and just the right amount of sweetness from the chocolate which he gets from Tabasco. The octopus is so incredibly tender and the hand made tortillas to soak up all this deliciousness are divine! The location is a bit off the beaten track for Centro restaurants but you will be very glad you made the effort to get here. It is right across the street from the Centro CFE office. Chef Daniel has a passion to showcase all the amazing culinary delights of Mexico and it shows in every dish. Come now and often! This restaurant is going in our regular rotation. Especially since we live so close!

OMG, what an experience. Fantastic, delicious, amazing. As residents of Mazatlan we have visited many restaurants, but ATOL takes the biscuit. Daniel was so cool and attentive throughout the totally exclusive birthday dinner for my wife Deb. We had the doors closed and locked behind us and we were the only customers allowed in ! We sat at the bar overlooking the prep and cooking area and sampled the tasting menu, one of everything on the evening menu (not on the website) and each especially cooked right in front of us. Each dish fed the eyes before the belly, so beautifully constructed and presented they were. Everything was so tasty and authentic to the old Mexico ways of cooking. We paired cocktails and wines from Daniel’s recommendation which did not disappoint. Each dish described in detail the history and origin as well as all the ingredients and method of preparation. It was so interesting. We had a lovely time and would thoroughly recommend ATOL when you visit Mazatlan.

I bought in to all the positive reviews and decided one of our few nights out at Atol. I generally liked the ambience of the restaurant and style. We sat at the bar with two other groups. Chef Daniel makes a set course dinner it seems. What is interesting is that the portions served to each party looked about the same even though the groups varried in size. This seemed strange to me. Daniel's idea is to bring food from other parts of Mexico to Mazatlan. It's not a bad idea, but the food really doesn't match the quality of what you get in those other places. I guess it's good that he is exposing tourists to food they aren't familiar with, but ATOL really isn't a 5 star location. I also thought his price for a red wine at 1000 pesos was a bit over the top. It was good, but not $50+ good. He needs a more econmical red wine choice. My bottom line - If you aren't familar with Mexican food beyond normal tacos and burritos it might be a good call. If you have dined in good restaurants in Mexico City or Oxacca I might just pass and enjoy the local cuisine instead.

Atol Mexico is a fairly new restaurant in Mazatlan, having opened only six weeks ago. Being our first visit, we chose to order the chef’s recommendations for the entire meal. We dined at the bar, up front and personal with the action in the kitchen, and Chef Daniel was sure to suss out any diet limitations we might have prior to planning his creative genius. Everything was prepared a few feet from us, other than sauces or smoked meats requiring hours to complete, and the sumptuous tortillas and sopes were made to order from his own fermented maíz flour. Chef Daniel visited with us as he and the sous chef prepared our meal, describing the individual plates, their history, and the region from which they came. The meal was served to us tapas-style, a beautiful visual and sensory feast that was layered with unique and authentic flavors. Bottom line, I’d wager this is amongst a few top tier gastronomic delights in Mazatlan, and although it’s off the beaten path it is simply not to be missed!

I had the pleasure of dining at Atol last evening! I was really impressed by the engaging chef and the history of each dish that he presented to us. The food was exquisite and my taste buds experienced something like they had never been able before. Each dish was a combination of of flavors. Every time that I felt that it could not be any better, the next dish would arrive with an equally delicious experience. This was probably my best dining experience ever! Thanks so much and I will certainly be back soon. John Lynch

We booked in for breakfast at Atol while visiting Mazatlan. Chef and team were so welcoming and explained a lot about the menu, he offered to choose dishes for us and made us some of the best food we have had in Mexico. Hand made tortillas as we watched, lots of nice drink options. Would highly recommend.

We had the most awesome experience here. We let the chef do his magic and surprise us, and everything was absolutely delicious. Each dish was unique, and the sauces were amazing and like none I have had in other Mexican restaurants. Also, the owner and family are so friendly and inclusive. If you're on a budget you may want to ask about the wine price before you buy - ours was more pricey than the entire dinner, but it was very good. You must come and try this restaurant!

Let me start off by saying this was one of the best meals we had in a very long time. Fresh flavors, meal prepared skillfully in front of you (we had the luxury of seating right in front of chef Daniel preparing our dishes). We were very early for our reservation and we were fortunate to witness the preparation of ingredients and mise en place for the lunch service. The chef was very friendly and explained to us all steps taken into preparing the ingredients, the pork process taking 3+ days to prepare really shined through with an explosion of flavors that really impressed us. We did the chef tasting course and we were presented with some of the most beautiful presented and thoroughly explained dishes you can expect only at a very high rated restaurant. A MUST visit if you are in Mazatlan

First things first: order a mezcal or glass of wine from the special selection or a custom cocktail, then settle in to peruse the list of small plates and unique dishes at this hidden gem (it won’t be hidden for long). This is the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Mazatlan! The cuisine at ATOL has a restrained heat that emphasizes the fresh, bright flavors of Mexico. You can literally taste the regions and cities that Chef Daniel explores throughout the menu, with dishes he’s perfected over his career traveling the country and a few recipes from his childhood, honoring his lovely mother whom we had the pleasure to meet.  Everything was perfectly prepared, cleverly presented, and DELICIOUS! From the melt in your mouth braised pork belly with warm tortillas pressed and cooked in front of you, to the succulent lamb tamale with double mole, to the maiz tostada topped with fresh fish and juice of cactus. Chef Daniel meticulously paired the perfect accent for each dish; the flavorful sweet, spicy, smokey, and nutty combinations were an utter delight. His passion for cooking is present in every dish. And the dessert cheesecake with warm waffle prepared by Chef Daniel’s wife Sabrina, scrumptious! For a real treat, come early, sit at the bar, and immerse yourself in the Chef’s Choice - creative gastronomy experience. You’ll enjoy unique off menu items and a personal touch like none other. We sat at the bar and opted for the Chef’s creations, and it was the most amazing culinary adventure, a Michelin Star experience. Thank you ATOL Family!

From the moment my wife and I arrived, chef/owner Daniel made it his mission to make us feel special. He offered to select our dishes - we gladly agreed, being unfamiliar with the traditional Mexican offerings. Then he invited us to sit at the bar and watch as he prepared our food. Every step of every course was explained to us as he cooked. Daniel said (more than once) "I love what I do!" His pride and his passion for his food was like a secret ingredient and everything tasted amazing. The food had a southern Mexico influence, Oaxacan I believe. Ingredients, preparations and flavors which were completely new to us. We very highly recommend Atol and, if you are lucky enough to do so, try to sit at the bar!

I have no idea how this business has 5.0. We came here with great expectations in our short trip to Mazatlán. Other reviews have stated how friendly and entertaining the chef is. Maybe we caught the chef on a very bad day. He could not even be bothered with saying hello to us. We tried multiple times to be friendly and compliment him on the food and the most we got was a nod out of him as we left. The food was good but we felt very unwelcome. The young lady that served us was nice, but it almost felt she had to go ask the chef any question we asked before she could give us an answer. It was a very awkward situation and we were the only customers there during the hour we spent. So there was no reason to be so rude. We had a reservation, but actually got there early. Like I said the food was good, but not good enough to receive this treatment. There may have even been some sort of cockiness or arrogance about the chef. Maybe he wakes up and makes his dinner customers feel special, but we were surely neglected. Not the place to go if you are visiting Mazatlán.

In a sea of mazatlán restaurants that are very similar in nature, Atol stands out from the crowd. This Oaxacan influenced restaurant really allows the food to shine. The décor is simple because the dishes are the star. Chef Daniel pays attention to every detail on each of his plates. He imports many of the very important ingredients to make these authentic Oaxacan dishes. Several of the dishes feature the most incredible black green and red moles. The moles are so good that it is understandable if you will want to lick the plates. Don’t miss the Pulpo (octopus) with black Mole, the Tetela(handmade tortillas stuffed with smoked beef brisket) and any of the fish dishes which are made from the catch of the day. One of the cooks is also the fisherman! Atol Is located across the street from the main CFE building in downtown Mazatlan. It is well worth seeking out this out-of-the-way gem!

We had a cruise port day in Mazatlan and were looking for something to do with our short stop and we are SO happy we visited Atol! My partner had been researching stuff to do and came across some other Trip Advisor reviews, and was interested in the tasting menu people had talked about. We got super lucky and came in for lunch, and since we were the only ones there we were able to sit up at the bar (something I think you normally need reservations for). Chef Daniel and his awesome new sous chef were so accommodating and fun to talk to. He asked about allergies and started serving us plate after plate of some of the most delicious food I've ever had! Every dish was so flavorful and full of depth, and it was awesome to hear about the history of each dish and what regions they came from. It didn't have all the stuffiness that fancy tasting menus can sometimes have, and we walked away so full and happy with everything! It was really fun to watch them put together each beautiful creation and it's so clear how much passion and thought Daniel puts into each dish. It was overall just amazing food, and we loved that we could experience some local dishes and culture to fill our afternoon. Could not recommend this place enough! Pro tip: If you're not able to do the tasting menu at the bar, make sure to at least order the black mole. It was UNREAL!

We reserved a lunch seating through their website prior to our visit to make sure we would be able to visit them during our cruise port time. I'm glad we did since they only serve a limited number of people per day. The space is quaint and intimate, with the kitchen only an arms reach away where all of the magic happens. We ordered a sampling of three dishes that sounded delicious: the huitlacoche quesadilla, short rib sope, and green chile chilaquiles topped with cochinita pibil. The flavors were wonderfully combined, and the presentation was beautiful. We finished out the visit with pan de muerto that is baked fresh in small batches. It is absolutely the best I've ever had - yeasty, soft, and scented with orange blossoms. Atol was more than we expected and exactly what we had hoped: an experience into the talented mind of a chef who melded together the flavors of Mexico.
