Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the worst dinners we've encountered. Family of four and only one meal was finished with all others returned not even half eaten. Some were overcooked, others under cooked and one with greens bordering on becoming rotten. One meal basically inedible. Given the cost...of the meals it was very substandard, the menu was terribly overpriced. Diner beware.More

A semi regular visitor to Dune. The last few visits were 5*. This time, things were different. Seated quickly but water not offered straight away like in previous visits. Neither were the specials of the day and Market Fish advised. When it came to order...and the market fish was advised to be salmon we had to pause and re-review the menu as salmon wasn’t well liked. A further delay in ordering. The menu seems to have shrunk as well. Previously there were at least 5 sides to chose from - now there are 2 - where has the No8 slaw gone?? When the food arrived it was well cooked but nothing special. The pork belly starter was the standout. Mains at $42 each, I’d have expected a bit more on the plate. We passed on dessert. Mmm, I hope things improve.More

We were a little nervous of eating here as the reviews seem to be a bit mixed. Happy to say we had a good breakfast and coffee here - eggs bene and smoked brisket smash. The staff were nice.

Worst meal out I’ve had! Can’t believe I’m even typing this, I’m not one to complain but that entire experience was awful! From the maître de pouring a glass of wine and most of it going into the water! Food was terrible seafood chowder is...full of carrot, pork belly is tougher than rubber, pork ribs almost as tough and served with pickled veges.. odd combo! Market fish itself was beautiful but the sauce and accompaniments did not work! Best part was the fries for the table I ordered which weren’t even on the menu! Didn’t stick around for desert! And when asked for feedback still got charged full price on everythingMore

Kia ora, Went here with my husband and four year old son. The waitress was very good and did her job well. There were 3 tables occupied and as a small town outside Auckland on a Friday it wasn’t very busy. The entree- chicken wings...were good but then the main meal arrived. I had pork ribs while my hubby had venison with macaroni and cheese, my son had chips and fish. The pork was perfect but the veggies- uncooked onion and cuspicum was not to my liking, garnished with coriander which didn’t make sense. Then the venison was medium rare which l,didn’t ask for( wanted medium well done). The chips were full of oil and the dip of white mayo which the restaurant tried to make for their own version was rather salty. I for one love my salty n but once it doesn’t taste like sea water a, it looses its essence indeed. Otherwise my family enjoyed being out. It is a star from me but the waitress was very kind and very welcoming. Very poor food.More

Earlier this year, we visited The Dune for dinner which was disappointing and we also noted a creep in the prices. Last week, we went back with the same friends, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, not to be. For starters, we shared a Margarita...Pizza, absolutely tasteless, and so dry, you couldn’t cut it with a knife. On our last visit, the wood fired pizza oven wasn’t operating due to staff shortage, this time it wasn’t working properly. Instead of a wood fired pizza, the Pizza were being made and rotated in an electric Pizza Oven. The mains, eye fillet, Pork Spare Ribs and Short Beef Ribs were surprisingly good. Disappointing were the reduced menu (the great slaw is gone), the prices for the Side dishes and in particular, the ridiculous price of the wine. In fact, it was so obvious as most tables were drinking wine by the glass, not by the bottle. We try to support local businesses but for these prices and continual wishful thinking that things would improve, we will not be going back.More

Not been to Dune for a few months but visited today and there looks to be a new, smaller menu. We were a party of 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids. The kids shared a pizza and some fries - they both gave a...thumbs up! My steak with a side of Mac and cheese was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and the Mac and cheese was soft and gooey on the inside but crunchy on top. The beef short rib and kale ceased salad were also perfectly prepared. Dune is a perfect stop to dinner. The staff are friendly and precessional.More

It was a shocker of a meal! The staff were lovely and the wine was nice but the food was terrible. No love or finesse for the prices. We came just before the second covid lock down and it was a 5 star review Goodness...knows what has happened since. We turned off specifically to stay at Mangawhai Heads to eat here - it won't be haopening again thats for sure! Smoked and brined chicken on a plate with no sauce to speak of. Dry as a peice of leather. Ordered bearnaisse sauce as it was the only one on the list at $4 to go with the chicken. It was foul. Carrots were underwhelming for a $16 side. Steak was ok but over cooked, kumera came but only 1/4 portion. Had finished my meal by the time the rest had arrived. The truffle jus had no truffle in it and just tasted Iike beef stock. Oh I forgot the Tuna Tartare starter - it was left over smoked kūmara in chunks (not sure where the tuna was) in a bland dressing. Just poor uninspired food all round. Will not go back. It felt like it was the only restaurant in the area and they couldn't be bothered.More

Liked this place for its warm and nice interior. Two nights dining. The first with wife and returned 2nd night with friends. The pizzas are straight out of a wood oven, crunchy base and generous toppings. I suspect the sish and chips are straight out...of a frozen pack. Coming from Oz we don't know why the menu options are limited, this seems to be the case in most restaurants we have been to.More

Friendly staff. Good food. Service a bit slow for a quiet time but otherwise ok. Can accommodate bigger groups and does have a high chair. Does have gluten free options. Overall, would recommend, especially for their pizzas.

Surprisingly quiet for a Saturday evening. We were quickly seated and water provided. The Specials Board seems to have disappeared of late. Despite being quiet our 4 mains took nearly 1hr to leave the kitchen. All were cooked well and very tasty. The Wellington was...delicious. A thumbs up from everyone.More
