Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had dinner at the Matakohe house, whilst staying there. The steaks were perfectly cooked and served with salad and chips.

The food was good and very fairly priced. ...Being close to the major attraction in the area, I thought it might be overpriced, but it was more than fair. And there was a choice of indoor or outdoor seating.

I've been here a couple of times for a meal, and enjoyed the food, atmosphere and the hosts. I do recommend to anyone. PS. Their Pea and Ham soup is to die for.

We were staying at the Matakohe camp ground with friends and noticed that Matakohe House had a sign out saying “licensed cafe and bar” so on Saturday late morning all walked there for something to eat and drink. We approached the house from the lawns at the front and the owner yelled from the veranda “You can f*#k off with those dogs this is private property “. We were stunned to say the least at both the language and the reception! We moved away but my partner approached and asked if the bar and cafe was open and was very rudely told “No!” Not exactly the friendly hospitable reaction one expects from someone in hospitality. Needless to say will never stay there and will give it a wide berth. It does make for an amusing “dining with friends” story though.

Beautiful pies and great coffee. Plus it's the only cafe near the kauri museum so make sure you schedule your visit around lunch time!

This is the only eatery in the area so if you are visiting the museum, do stop by for a lovely drink to absorb the beauty of the countryside.

Delicious home made food. Perfect for warming the soul during the winter time when we visited Situated across from the Kauri museum, prices were very reasonable.

This is the perfect place to stop after visiting the Matakohe Museum. You have to walk or drive a wee bit down the hill towards the water the same side as the museum. Most food is cooked on the premises - yummy fresh savoury tarts, sandwiches, delicious mini carrot cakes with cream cheese icing etc. There's good accommodation as well. This cafe/BB is run by people who know how to run a good business. They are welcoming , hospitable, knowledgeable hosts.

We popped in here after touring the Kauri Museum, the staff were really friendly, we only had a snack because we had already eaten but the coffee was delicious!

We visited the Kauri Museum and walked all through the exhibits and worked up an appetite. We walked past the museum cafe and found the Matahohe House Cafe a little further up the road. It was busy at lunchtime but the service was efficient and the food excellent. The views from the porch and the restaurant are lovely. If you are driving north and even if you don't stop at the museum--this cafe is worth a stop.

Excellent quiches and carrotcake at lunch, and rack of lamb at dinner! Outstandingly superior to any we had elsewhere during our 3 weeks in NZ.

Popped in for lunch after visiting the museum just 50 yards down the road. My wife and I had a very tasty lunch along with tea for two. Lovely kauri chairs and tables. Beautiful garden setting all said and done made a very pleasant dining experience.

We'd pre-selected, Matakohe House Cafe for one day and night stop over, intending to visit the Kauri Museum 50 - 60 meters away. Our hosts (Lynn + Alex) were exemplary. They provided my wife and I with discounted tickets for the Museum thus allowing a completion of our visit next day - fabulous!! There is nothing but praise for the service accorded us, and, the steak and eggs with salad was an absolute treat, my wife enjoying thoroughly the salmon with a side dish of steamed vegetables. Breakfast, bacon and eggs, toast and coffee, were as good as that offered at various Auckland venues. Lynn and Alex are just wonderful warm-hearted hosts with facilities to match. We will revisit again when moving further north via Dargaville.
