Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Located with great views towards the harbour adjacent to the cemetery and opposite the Kauri Museum. The cafe is pretty basic in layout and furniture. The staff were friendly. The menu is quite limited and there is a blackboard menu with few choices and a pie cabinet and cake/slice selection. The service was quick. One of us got a chicken pie and it was superb. The staff said they bake them on site and they are in high demand. I got the corn fritters with bacon and hot chilli sauce. I can honestly say it they were the nicest I've ever tasted anywhere in the world. The bacon rashers were layered between each fritter and the sour cream and chilli sauce were just the right amount. The fritters were packed with corn and not batter with a little bit of corn. Great value to $12.50. The coffee was fine and the iced coffee just right.

After visiting the Kauri Museum we went across the road to enjoy a lunch at the Gumdiggers Cafe. The homemade cakes and the “steak, bacon & cheese” pie was fantastic. We were recommended to purchase their famous pastie but there were none left when we arrived. I can understand as the pie was really good and wholesome. The staff were also very friendly.

We were there on a Sunday afternoon for lunch after being at the Paparoa Car Show which our club was there. The pub at Paparoa was to busy to be able to feed us. So we went up the road to the Gumdiggers café. This café is opposite the Matakohe Kauri Museum. I understand all the food is baked on the premises by the owners. We both had a pie each, which had the best pastry and fulling I have had in a pie for a very long time. Would highly recommend you have them. The custard slice just melted in our mouths, not full of flour etc... fantastic. All the food in the cabinet looked very fresh, and the blackboard menu was very good. It was just enough of a choice to not be overloaded with choices. Our friend had the soup and bread and a pie. They both said it was great. The place was rathe busy, but the staff were very friendly considering we all seem to come at the same time. There was plenty of parking opposite the Museum as well. We would both highly recommend this cafe when you are going to see the Kauri Museum, take time out to go and enjoy a snack or light meal and drink there.

We stopped here for lunch while visiting the Kauri Museum. We walked in thinking it would have the same ‘vibe’ as the surrounding buildings but instead it was very plain and out of touch with its surroundings. The food was very expensive for what we got, everything was very plain, no side salad or garnish and everything looked like it had just been deep fried from a packet. The food was nice but could have been better for the price. This cafe could be so much better with a few old photos or art work on the walls keeping in touch with the kauri heritage of the area, it was very disappointing.

Now under Museum management, the coffee (Kauri brand of course!) was hot and strong, and the scone with jam and cream was generous serving and fresh. Very friendly staff - other food such as sandwiches looked to be being made to order. Plenty of parking opposite the Museum, with a pleasant outlook towards the Kaipara harbour.

Stopped here for lunch on our road trip back home. Beautifull view and friendly staff however 2 out of five of us left the cafe feeling sick after eating. I ordered waffles which were presented well but they were very dry and were way too sweet and the ham toasti left my son feeling ill. Suggestion to change the recipe for the waffles.you call them belgium waffles but they are a far cry from belgium waffles and no one needs that much sugar.

Clean, friendly staff. Food was delicious. Best Kundera wedges I have tasted in a long time. Very good coffee and generous pot of tea. Lovely views, plenty of parking. Nice cafe, would certainly visit again.

I ordered a chocolate milkshake. As soon as it was delivered I knew I would be disappointed. The level was well below the top of the cup and when I picked it up it was very light. Needless to say I paid $7 for a cup of foam.

Perfect food and coffee - quick and friendly service too. Salmon and BLT bagels and coffees were spot on.

Stopped in for a coffee after visiting the museum. Our long blacks were hot but not very strong - maybe only a single shot? Little carrot cake was ok but a bit dry. Friendly staff.

Great home cooked pies, best we’ve had in a very long time, and the cream and jam scones were just as excellent. Will definitely find an excuse to come back again!
