Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Such a popular fish and chip restaurant for a very good reason - the f and c are very nice indeed. Another good thing about this restaurant is it is either take away or eat in and they tell you [almost to the minute] how long your meal will be. Ours was 45 minutes which gave us the opportunity to look around the town. A great choice of fish - we had hoki and lemon fish. Worth noting that the portions aren't very big and it is quite expensive Well worth a try

We went early on a Friday night, the staff were very unfriendly & unhelpful. Ordered the Fish burger, Battered Blue Nose, Scoop of Chips, Spring Roll & Kids Fish bites: Total = $66. Service was quick and the food was nice but nothing special, in our opinion overpriced for what was essentially fish & chips. Nice atmosphere and outdoor seating area over the water. Good to try, but we wouldn't go back again.

The food is good, but the pricing is over the top expensive. I think they're milking their 'most famous in NZ' tagline a bit too hard. The fish portions are about 100g and are around $14 - $16 per piece, tiny tubs of tomato sauce $3, $4.50 for aioli (both decanted from commercial tubs, not home made or anything). I dont think it's worth the price and would not return.

Totally overrated, batter and chips were greasy, and battered oysters all you could taste was batter. Everything over priced, two of us had one piece of fish each, a scoop of chips between us and two battered oysters for $63.00, then was curtly told if we want drinks that’s separate, a can of Fanta and a small kombucha was $12.50! I think the worst part was the woman serving, she shouldn’t be dealing with the public if she can’t even be pleasant, we felt like an inconvenience being there. All n all a terrible experience, whatever it was famous for has long left the building.

Grossly overpriced fish and chips and not sure how they get away with it lol but I suspect it’s just tourists. The wine selection being advertised as “NZs favourite wine” is just insulting and false advertising at its finest. No - cardboard box wine that 16 year olds drink to get smashed is not NZ’s favourite wine by any stretch and the price per glass is appalling since you can buy 3 litres for not much more. Given they charge $17.50 for a small piece of fish they are not struggling so please do not insult customers and put some decent drinks on the menu and stop overcharging.

Walking in, looking at the fish cabinet, although advertised otherwise it quite clearly contained only several days old fish. We chose the seafood chowder and a prawn basket. The chowder was ok but it had not been adequately thickened and for $25 lacked seafood. In the prawn basket were 8 good sized prawns for $32 but they tasted only of the batter. We had one beer, one cider, total cost about $80 This is not Mangonui's strongest selling point - as advertised - especially because of the apparent lack of locally resourced fresh fish - amazing really!

The fish and chips were nice but way over priced. It was the same frozen chips & kumara fries you buy from any other chip shop, but way more expensive. The fish pieces were tiny. From its “world class” reputation I expected to be blown away. The aioli wasn’t very nice. I ordered an Americano that tasted like chemicals! It was so bad I spat it out! I took it back and the waitress admitted it was the third one they had back that day and they couldn’t understand why it tasted so bad. She said something about potential salt water?! As a barista myself, if I had coffee coming out of my machine tasting like that I would suggest not to serve it at all and be concerned of potential health risks! They offered me an alternative drink and I paid the difference for the tiniest glass of wine worth $11!! We won’t go back again.

We visited the fish shop for some fish and chips on the wharf and found it to be extremely overpriced unfortunately. Great spot, albeit very hot on the deck but our experience was that they are taking advantage of holiday makers who buy into the history of the place. I wish we had read the reviews prior to our visit.

If you like your fish cooked from frozen this is the place for you! Fish was dry and tasteless couldn’t eat it. Gave it to the cat when I got home and she wasn’t keen either. Hadn’t visited this place for years and thought it might have improved - wrong! Don’t mind paying premium for quality but at $16 for 100 gram piece of frozen fish they have got to be joking. No wonder the place was empty!

This place was always a must when travelling up north. I will never stop there again, lunch was $135.00 for 3 people and most of it was awful. The Blue Nose was $15.50 per piece which would have been okay if it was nice but it had been frozen and smelt old. The sauces were $6.00 each, the oysters were $6.00 each but quite nice, bread was $3.00 for 2 pieces. It all seemed a rip off. I have no problem for paying a bit more if its good (and it used to be amazing) but never again.

It was ok nothing more and nothing less. The Lemon Fish, which was a bit more expensive, unfortunately did not meet expectations. For a supposed “must-see” it was more of a disappointment. In terms of taste or quality, it fell short of what was hoped for given the price and recommendations.

This fish and chip shop was highly recommended from years ago and so we wanted to try it for ourselves. We were very disappointed. The fish was blue nose and because it was$15 a piece expected it to be amazing, but it wasn’t. We felt it was all extremely overpriced and the place is living off its past reputation. The chowder was also disappointing and came in a takeaway carton- at lunch $25 is extreme for how it was served and not something I would order there again.

What a pretentious outfit this is.Yes I have been in the Trade so have some knowledge on this.On bad advice I was taken to lunch here last week. The fish was lovely even though not big,but the thing that got me most was the pricing of everything.I dont mind if things are a little bit more expensive, but when you get charged an extra dollar for gluten free batter or $3.00 for a little tomato Sause for your sausage it is a bit rich.I was told that I was expecting too much. for a takeaway place. As it has tables and chairs I regard it at least to be a dinner if not a restaurant. I bought a 330 ml bottle of beer as they had no tap beer available and it cost $12.00 Now I know that you have to make a reasonable profit like 120% but this is nothing short of ripping people off.($144.00 a dozen) I think they were put out when I requested a glass to drink my beer out of. Eating utensils made of wood or bamboo that you had to look hard at to see which was which. The fish, Gropper & Bluenose were lovely. Chips were good. Battered sausage was nice but expensive especially when you add the Sause. Mussel fritter was awful.Over cooked dry with very little mussel Beer massively overpriced. Would I go back.NO Would I recommend to others NO STAY AWAY Hey I am also happy to put my name to this. Brendan Carroll Gladstone Wairarapa

I’ve heard the hype, but was it true. I can say I was pretty impressed. Parking can be tight, but it’s worth the trip. Ordering is easy, off the board, and then you watch them collect the raw fillets from the glass cabinet for your order. Place is tidy and clean, lots of seating and a great drinks area. I ordered a hoki, fat chips (or shoe string) and 6 scallops with tomato sauce it was $34.50. The fish price is higher than I would expect. Ordering system easy, take your ticket and they will call your number over the PA. I was pretty full, those scroll o were fat, and the piece of fish was think , struggled to finish it. Must check out.

We travelled a long way to have a special treat of Fish n Chips at Mangonui. Such a beautiful settlement and harbour. What a disappointment everything is radically over-priced and the quality poor. We had Fish Chowder. $25 for a small disposable tub of fish flavoured potato soup. The shellfish element is from those frozen packets you get at the supermarket, small muscles etc cut in half, and a couple of tiny pieces of fish. Honestly, by far the worst seafood chowder I have ever had in my whole life. The chips were not crisp and were unenjoyable. This outfit reflects very badly on NZ. Until they lift their game....steer well clear
