Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

this place is so well advertised through all the travel guides and is well worth a trip for lunch Friendly staff Very enjoyable fish and chips Not the best fish meal you'll ever have but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience dining over the water Highly...recommendMore

The previous reviews prepared us to expect less than we would wish for a world famous restaurant. Because of its bad reviews, we shared one order. One piece of fish, chips, tartar sauce and tomato sauce — pricey and mediocre. Nice views of the harbor....We love the town.More

Oh where to begin! The best range of fresh seafood that I have seen in one place ever. Delicious, awesome, great and priced very well.

Really disappointed with our meal here. We had been travelling around the North Island for about two weeks and this place was recommended to us so we didn't hesitate to check it out. Not sure if our expectations were too high but it was a...let down. We had tried fish & chips s few times on our trip and always go for Lemon Fish and Chips and every time we had it it was nice, fresh and good value. But not so much at the Manganui Fish Shop. The parking was pretty average and so too the service area and the seating. Just run down and unspectacular. Unfortunately the meal was average and very overpriced. Don't get me wrong, the fish was lovely but it was so small and probably about double what we paid at other fish ships on the entire North Island. A single small (11cm) piece of Lemon Fish was $14.50 and that was without chips. They were an extra $6 per small scoop so two Fish & Chips meals cost $41 NZD. I understand the cost of living issues are impacting on everyone, but this is way too much. That's double to cost for a smaller serve than many other small town fish shops. It was nice but be prepared to splash out some cash here.More

OMG, be prepared to take out a mortgage when dining here. I expected to pay a bit more but their prices are eye-wateringly expensive. Ok, the location is great, I’ll give them that. The food was ok, but nothing amazing. My wife found 2 pcs...of shell in her mussel fritter which was a bit off-putting. This place might be a nostalgic Northland institution, but sadly we wouldn’t recommend it & wont be going back. I’m a proud patriotic Kiwi & don’t like giving bad reviews, but something has to be said!More

Such a popular fish and chip restaurant for a very good reason - the f and c are very nice indeed. Another good thing about this restaurant is it is either take away or eat in and they tell you [almost to the minute] how...long your meal will be. Ours was 45 minutes which gave us the opportunity to look around the town. A great choice of fish - we had hoki and lemon fish. Worth noting that the portions aren't very big and it is quite expensive Well worth a tryMore

Went with my parents on trip back from Cape Reinga based on previous visit, and reviews on tripadvisor. We tried the Hoki, Lemon fish, Fat chips and Kumara chips. The fish and chips were average and underseasoned. I'm from Glen Innes in Auckland, and Marsic...bros beats this any day, even if it's not on the water. The staff, especially the older ones, were also quite unpleasant, no smiles at all. Seemed like they wanted to get any interaction with me done as quickly as possible. Not going back ever.More

After looking forward to what i thought was going to be fish and chips on another level, i was disappointed. The fish was nice, but a very small portion and the chips were just frozen chips, nothing special. All in all, an expensive average meal....On a positive note. The location was good and the staff were very nice. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype.More

The fish and chips were nice but way over priced. It was the same frozen chips & kumara fries you buy from any other chip shop, but way more expensive. The fish pieces were tiny. From its “world class” reputation I expected to be blown...away. The aioli wasn’t very nice. I ordered an Americano that tasted like chemicals! It was so bad I spat it out! I took it back and the waitress admitted it was the third one they had back that day and they couldn’t understand why it tasted so bad. She said something about potential salt water?! As a barista myself, if I had coffee coming out of my machine tasting like that I would suggest not to serve it at all and be concerned of potential health risks! They offered me an alternative drink and I paid the difference for the tiniest glass of wine worth $11!! We won’t go back again.More

Came here for lunch, and the fish is good, but it’s so expensive ($10-15 for 1 piece of fish?!). I don’t believe the food is significantly better than other fish shops. Probably wouldn’t be back.

AMAZING location over the water, the freshest fish, stopped for late lunch for fish and chips (grouper), and chowder and hot buttered rolls- AMAZING. Came back next morning for the freshest raw fish salad (coconut cream)- DELICIOUS! Saw orcas cruise by and also bronze whalers.

So so expensive and the staff seem to not want to be there. Tired, not very clean, more like a conveyor belt experience. Trust the locals and go to Fresh and Tasty. Way cheaper, kind and smiling staff

This place had been recommended to us so we thought we would try it out and we were not disappointed! We were able to select our fish fresh from the display and it was cooked to perfection and plenty of it. There were numerous seafood...options to choose from so something for everyone’s taste and they are also licensed so you can enjoy a wine or beer with your meal as well.More
