The Taiwan Railways lunch box ( bento in Japanese, borrowed word in Taiwanese) is Taiwan's most famous quick meal. I was there around dinner time today and the bento were selling like hot cakes. I've eaten the Taiwan Railways lunch box many times. They taste good, and they are great value.They come in several varieties, just decide what you want and make your selection.

When people in Taiwan go on a long-distance train trip they will often buy a Railway Meal Box. The Meal Boxes have a great variety of food, including an egg and a pork chop, plus vegetables and rice. They are quite delicious and very filling. The price is very reasonable. Many foreign visitors count having a Railway Meal Box as a highlight of their trip to Taiwan.

Great thing: many ingredients, big portion, definitely filling.
Not so great: only 1 option available. (pork ribs)

I've tried bento in Taipei, Tai Nan, JiuFen and I personally like the bento which I bought inside the Hua Lian's train. It's was so delicious and with body balance nutrition. The bento contains: egg, vegetables, meat, fish and tou fu. Value of money !!

Right across the Hua Lian Main Train station, this place offers a few quick meal box for those in need of a meal and waiting for the train. At 80, 100 and 120 NTD, choose between pork and chicken choices. My friend had the chicken, which was ok, warm and good enough. The pork was not good since it was cold, fortunately the rice was still warm to make it bearable.

For a tourist, the big draw of a bian dang (bento box) is its value. A tielu biandang (bian dangs that were -- and still are -- made for selling on the train) is the staple of these economical (~ 100 TWD) and travel-ready meal boxes. I especially appreciate the English caption on the menu in this store that describes succinctly the differences between the eight meal options.

I dod not visit the shop. However I enjoyed the railway meal box very much. The meal box was bought in the moving train, from the train officer who moved from coach to coach during lunch time.
I was pleasantly surprised that there was even a choice for vegetarian meal box.
The meal was delicious, nutritional and more important balanced!
Railway Meal Box is a successful and enterprising innovation in Taiwan, which should be learned by all railways!
