Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was staying here so just had to confirm I’d be here for dinner. If lodge is full, ya might not get a reservation, but keep trying. Fantastic food…breakfast and dinner. Locally sourced. Deann is trained as a chef and it shows. Eclectic range of...choices for each meal. I tried something different each evening. All were way tasty and worthy enough to call gourmet. Snacks: I tried chowder, mullet bird dumplings and mussel cakes. Mains: lamb, baked blue cod, and salmonMore

We were keen to enjoy the delights promoted in this restaurant’s page but when we tried to book a table for the following evening we were disappointed to be told they were only catering for their own lodge guests. We’re OK with and understand that...but feel that should be included on their page. We ate elsewhere …More

We popped in to The Ghurkka Hill on the off chance that they could fit us in and we struck lucky. Having heard from friends that the food was good here we were excited to get a table. We were not disappointed, the food we...ordered was fantastic. All three courses were fabulous. The service was great and waiting staff were knowledgeable about the menu. I would wholeheartedly recommend this placeMore

Luckily for us we were staying two doors away from Church Hill and were able to book a table (recommended) for dinner. After a fabulous three course meal where we ate EVERYTHING (unusual for me) we asked to book again for our last night on...the island. Chris contacted us later that evening and we were able to repeat the experience once more. Yayyy! Best food on the island and rates amongst the best in NZ. Fresh, delicious, tasty. If you get the chance try the muttonbird potstickers - it's a nice gentle introduction to the flavours. Would definitely recommend. Do a big day walk and then enjoy!More

We ate 3 nights at Church Hill restaurant. Di is a master chef! The food was fresh and truly outstanding. She accommodated our special requests with grace and creativity. Chris was amazing and so attentive as the host. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

We were lucky enough to get a table here, as priority is given for their 6 tables to residents. Delightful host and setting. Good choice of interesting options for 3 course dinner. Well priced and good selection of wines by the glass. Delicious and excellent...value dinner.More

Getting a table at the Church Hill restaurant can be hard as Chris rightly prioritizes the people staying at the Inn. But it is well worth the effort !!! Running the Inn and restaurant is a "life calling" for Deanne and Chris and they would...rather deliver an amazingly personal touch to 8 guests, than go after bigger numbers. Our mains (lamb and paua or abalone) were worthy of a 5 star restaurant in a big city; so were our desserts. If you are adventurous, try the mutton dumplings, but they are not for everyone.More

Outstanding restaurant run by a friendly couple with a passion for providing a great dining experience. I visited on a horrendously cold and wet day and was torn between sitting in the room with the roaring fire place or the room with spectacular views to...the sea. The food was exceptional but what I liked best is that everything is home made - even the pepper - and the ingredients are mostly sourced locally. There are also some unique options on the menu that you don’t normally get to sample in other restaurants around NZ, such as the mutton bird dumplings that I tried (an unusual flavour that grows on you). Chris, who runs the front of house, kindly gave me a ride back to my accomodation afterwards, so I wouldn’t have to walk back in the rain. All in all a fantastic dining experience and hands down my favourite place to eat in Oban. Just make sure you reserve in advance because they only cater for small numbers (which adds to the appeal to me) but it does mean it’s hard to get a reservation on the day.More

This restaurant is an experience you should not miss. It is not easy to get into, so book early. The couple that run it ( on their own) are super friendly and great hosts. The food was stunningly good with the finest of ingredients and...cooked by the best. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary there and were so happy with our choice. Worth every cent.More

Ok being honest there is a lack of higher end options for eating out in Oban. Church Hill offers the best experience for dinner on the island. Very enjoyable experience and lovely owners.

My wife and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. We have been in NZ for 17 years and this was by some distance the most refined meal we have had it that time. The welcome, the location, the atmosphere, the service was simply sublime....The quality of the food was amazing, we loved it. My only problem is that it is so far from where we live we cannot go back on a regular basis.More

The view is breath taking of Half Moon Bay from the dining area. The restaurant is a very old 1890’s cottage full of historic character and the centre piece is the roaring fireplace. It is fine dining 3 course menu of local delicacies with max...8 tables where bookings are essential. This is a passion for Dee & Chris passionate and it comes across in service and quality of food. 100% recommend this place if staying on Stewart Island.More

What an outstanding experience in every way. The food was fantastic delicious and presentation was top class. We had freshly baked breads with dips, whitebait fritters and French onion soup then for the main dish lamb rack and greenbone with apple crumble and rhubarb and...white chocolate mouse with an Irish coffee to finish. The service was welcoming and so friendly from the moment we walked in until we were offered a lift home in the pouring rain really above and beyond. I would come back to Stewart Island just to have another evening at this delightful restaurant.More

A lovely warm welcome with the open fire and friendly owners on a rainy evening. The menu had something for everyone in our party. The mussels in the chilli broth were great complete with nasturtiums and a good size portion. The spinach ravioli with homemade...pasta was also very good. The Southland lamb rack was blushing and was complemented very well with the Pinot noir jus and daily vegetables. The apple and rhubarb crumble with the oat topping and vanilla ice cream was also a very good portion and the ice cream melted lovely into the crumble to give each bite texture. As places are limited you will need to book and you won’t be disappointed.More
