Situated near the port, this is a popular restaurant and take-away (Pizzas especially), There are numerous outside tables. We decided on Pizzas of which there was a huge choice. My Marinara was the most expensive at E9-50 and my wife's Napoli was E7-50, both thin and crisp bases. Despite no obvious sign of any Italians, we decided these were the best Pizzas we'd had since a trip to Mondavio in central Italy in the late 80's, The only downside was the service, which was a bit slow, but, more importantly, largely charmless.

Don Tomate is an excellent restaurant as long as you stick to what they are good at. They are very good at pasta dishes and pizzas - they’re probably good at fish dishes too although on our two visits we stuck to pasta. But don’t ask them for cocktails even something simple like Campari and fresh orange juice which we’ve had several times on this island. It confuses them! The service is very attentive and they work hard in a busy restaurant. The location is great. Thank you Miguel and team.

As the name suggests, this is not an Italian restaurant, and neither the waiters nor any of the kitchen staff are Italian, so don't expect authentic Italian cuisine. The food is pretty good, though. Just the service is amateurish and can even be rude at times.

Very disappointing. It was about 45mins after we ordered when a thin seafood soup arrived and a further 50mins before the main course was served. This was not worth the wait because it was the worst seafood paella I can recall ever having. Paella should be superb in Spain. Instead, the rice was more like savoury rice than delicious, sticky, rich paella rice. Lots of seafood but little taste. I then ordered a coffee against my better judgement...yuk. Thin and poor quality. I should add that my wife enjoyed her grilled vegetables ("best ever") and a tasty seafood casserole. The wine was good value too. However, several items on the menu were not available, wine choices too, and the service was friendly but glacially slow. The seafood soup was priced at just €5 and the paella at €14 pp. Good prices but not good quality I'm afraid. Not this night at least. Choose carefully hope your luck is in.

Greeted with disgruntled waiter despite having made a reservation who picked up the ‘reserved’ table sign and shook his head. No card payments available so had to take cash out which cost €7 withdrawal fee from the bank. FOOD, if you like your pizza bases like toasted Mexican tortilla wraps then this is the place for you. Pasta sauce was fine. Cold beers were one of the few highlights. Charged €2 for Parmesan cheese which came after three quarters of the pasta had already been eaten. Asked for the bill about 5 times before finally being presented the cheque. 2 beers, 1 water, 2 pastas, 1 garlic bread pizza. €30. Would rather cook pasta at home . Don TBother

I'm never that enthusiastic about pizza , often finding the base is so hard to cut that my wrists are aching half way through, or the topping is sparse and pretty tasteless. However, the pizzas looked so good walking past Don Tomate that I thought I would try one and was not disappointed. The base was light and crispy and the topping generous and very tasty. Absolutely wonderful and I ate the whole lot, which I haven't done in years. We returned another evening and had the fresh fish of the day which was brought to the table so show us before being taken away for filleting and cooking. It was superb, sorry no photo of this as I couldn't wait to tuck in! Excellent value for money and a superb view of the moon reflected in the sea. Good service too.

Carpaccio of tuna and beef were tasteless and disappointing.main course of spaghetti scoglio was poor, whereas on previous occasions it’s been excellent. No sauce , watery and tasteless seafood. Night off for chef?

Ok. First it needs to be said that this was the only restaurant in Playa de Santiago open on Tuesday night so it was busy. However… After waiting over half an hour just to speak to a waiter place an order (no one had even asked about drinks) the waiter decided he was a comedian and wanted to make jokes about no pizza which didn’t go down well after such a long wait. Also bizarrely there was no meat available for pasta which I don’t think was a joke. I have to be honest I got a bit cross at this point and when the waiter realised this things got a bit better. The pizza was good actually as was my wife’s spaghetti with prawns and the beer was fine. Everyone that evening had to wait a long time for service though. I wouldnt be happy to go back if there were other options open in town I would go there instead.

Well, that pretty much sums it up. And I saw the look on the waitress 's face after she sucked up to a table of gullable tourists. Hatred. Food looked lousy and the service is lousy. That was on a Sunday. Avoid this place at all costs! Some chefs we know in other places say not to go there. We went to a friendly sandwich bar and were treated really well, and ordered food just because they were so nice and didn't demand that we do so. We 3 speak Spanish, but that didn't matter at Tomato. Go elsewhere!

The spaghetti with seafood is the recommended dish and there was plenty of seafood and a good sauce. Raviolis also good but small portion. Reasonable house wine. A good experience but not to the extent that we would be desperate to return. Nice and friendly service.

This place is open when few other places are on a sunday, so it was very busy and the waiters were run off their feet. Food was good, fish and a steak. House white not chilled quite enough but drinkable. However we were not asked about desert and the bill arrived, shortly followed by the bill for the next table! The French couple although pleased initially we might pay their bill, agreed to do so themselves.

Three visits over 4 weeks recently were mainly dictated by availability, because Don Tomate is open more than most of the restaurants in Playa Santiago, but, the food was very good, much better than in previous years. Remarkable were a fish of the day which was colorado snapper, beautiful cooked, a mushroom risotto (always a good test for the chef) and a veal carpaccio. Pizzas were very good on another occasion, but they’re expected to be. Service was good and the cost was reasonable, though be warned they will ask for cash. It would be nice if they replaced the faded awnings.

Not my business really but was really disappointed by the way another customer was treated. Nice young couple came along and asked for a table for 2, fair enough fully booked but waiter told them they could wait and pointed to the bench at the front where they politely settled down for what should not have been too long. An English couple came along asked the same waiter the same question he gave the same answer and pointed out the same bench. Instead they looked around saw a couple about to pay so sidled up to their table, hovered and sat down as soon as they stood up. The nice young man was naturally aggrieved, personally I would have taken it up with the English couple, but no he went to the waiter who listened and simply shrugged. He should have told the English couple that the couldn’t have the table it was reserved. Rightly the young couple did not hang around to be insulted further. I wouldn’t go back on principal. Food was nice!

The first day I arrive to eat with three tables available, the waiter tells me that everything is full, I politely tell him that he has tables available and he tells me well, wait until I can clean them literally. After waiting, he gives me a table and treats me terribly, because I get the brilliant idea of giving it a second chance and I arrive the next day at 6:30 p.m., to make a reservation and the same waiter tells me, eat now because later you'll get I'm going to pick up a reservation for one person, but I'll try to find a space. Well, I show up at 7:30 p.m. at the restaurant and he tells me we're full, sit there and I'll take care of you. I tell him to explain to me what's happening with this bad treatment towards me and he starts laughing. This type of behavior in this waiter is what every boss should avoid towards the client, so I leave my complaint and of course I am a person who travels a lot to La Gomera for business and therefore I will comment my complaint to anyone who tries to go eat at this place.

We have known this restaurant for many years and it did go through a period of chaotic service due to taking too many diners and simply not coping. The village is currently very quiet and it has given them the unwanted opportunity to provide excellent food and good service. The fish was some of the best we have had, perfect pizzas and super pasta. We shall definitely be back and keep up the good work that you have proved capable of.
