About
When visiting this beautiful seaside village - do NOT miss a visit to one of Ireland's smallest pubs - Mary McBride's.....say hello to owners Cormac and his sister Fiona while enjoying a pint of Guinness and chatting with one or two of the locals. This pub has tons of history based on the life of the original owner, Mary McBride herself. The pub is a traditional old style house pub that has had few modernised features in and around it. The downstairs is a lovely family run pub with really nice pub grub menu, with many an evening turning into a sing song - we've got music most Saturday evenings and Mary's Sunday session from 4pm every Sunday. Bar menu from April to October Monday - Sunday. The upstairs restaurant opened in 2015 and goes under the name of "The Little Black Door;" it's a seafood bistro and is open Thursday - Saturday 6pm to 9.30pm. It serves a wide range of local seafood but also chicken, duck and steaks. Call in and enjoy a seafood delight cooked by head chef Charlie Mcauley and say hello to Sarah and the rest of the girls in the restaurant.

Generally very good food although overpriced. The staff are lovely, very friendly and helpful. The scallop starter with the tostada was disappointing, very little flavour of scallops(chopped up scallops, not whole) overpowered by other Asian flavours. The monkfish cheeks were tough unfortunately overcooked. The main courses were generally good.

Not much appeared open in the village but Mary McBrides Pub and the village market. We enjoyed our lunch of a delicious steak & Guiness pie with roasted root veggies & chips. Also had a Caesar salad that was just average. Staff were friendly & efficient. The pub looks so historical with wooden floors, old wood tables, Guiness wall signs and a tiny stand-up bar.

Such a change from the place downstairs; no disrespect, that was lovely, but this was MUCH better and really suited a birthday treat. However, if you want to go, the tables book up quickly, so decide early. I personally ate the fish, as the guest chef specialises in this, but my Dad swore by the lamb. My mum would have said that there was far too little onion in the champ but it evoked special memories, so I loved it regardless.

Perhaps it is because that I've always returned to Cushendun and enjoyed both pubs there that I have taken my recent experience at McBrides so badly. A friend, a local, and I went into McBrides for some light lunch on Wednesday 24 August 22. I ordered the chicken "open sandwich" from the menu and subsequently my friend politely explained that she was vegetarian and were there any open sandwich options available to her. The waitress was totally unanimated and disinterested and replied "it's what's on the menu, it's just basically a salad, you could have that without the chicken". Interestingly, these words were accompanied by a hand gesture with her two hands opening up like a book, presumably representing the openness of the bread comprising the sandwich. The food arrived without a smile or word. The salad components being very good but swamping the single, VERY thin slice of wheaten bread, about 3Ă—2 inches. Halfway thru my meal, I asked if I may have another slice of wheaten as I had lots of salad left. Upon departure, the waitress, in a very curt manner, slammed down a plate in front of me saying "here's the wee bill for your extra bread". On clarification, I was informed that "nothing is free these days you know". It's not the ÂŁ1 , it's not the total cost being over ÂŁ30, it's not even that "open sandwiches" usually comprise two slices of bread being "open", it's the appalling attitude that hurt. On departure I mooted to my friend that if this how locals are treated, what do they say to tourists? I shall refrain from quoting the waitresses reply. Over the years I have spent much time and money at McBrides, brought my family visiting from overseas and in my role as a tour guide and tourism information advisor on the Antrim coast, have directed MANY visitors to both Cushendun and McBrides which will undoubtedly have brought the business added footfall and revenue. It was embarrassing to see how embarrassed my friend was that we could be treated with such contemptuous lathargic distain in her local. Ironically, not two months prior, we had spent over ÂŁ60 on an evening meal in the upstairs restaurant and then, the young lady serving us (not seen her working since) was smiley, intelligent, helpful and charming.

There weren't many restaurants open in the area so we were lucky to find this one so we could eat something. We ordered a plate of pasta each. The truth is that it was just normal, it served to take away hunger but I thought it could be improved, since the sauce was too heavy and digestion became difficult. I didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of the restaurants but it's not a bad place either.

So disappointed! Service wasn't great to start with, we ordered 1 coke, 1 beer, a scampi dish and a starter portion of chowder. Server seemed a little abrupt but as we were sitting outside she could have been really busy inside and we were unaware. Food came - my partner thoroughly enjoyed the chowder. My dish however was absolutely disappointing! I ate a few bits of scampi thinking it was pretty tasteless and greasy I then procedded to cut up a few bit for our dog only to find the fish was COMPLETELY RAW, it was a grey, clear jelly like substance! I immediately got up and called a server to tell her the fish was raw and I didn't want a replacement. No apology was offered then or after, no other member of staff came to us at all. As my partner finished her coke I noticed there was a pink slime up the inside of her glass. She was disgusted as she had nearly finished the glass. I went in to pay which was with the original server. She took the Scampi and coke off the bill but wasn't exactly apologetic. When I came back to the table there was a bearded chef sitting at another table smoking with his full kitchen uniform on apron etc. Not exactly the best hygiene standards. I would avoid this place at all costs.

Very nice lunch indeed. Opted for the Guinness and Steak pie with champ and veg and it was delicious. Steak melted in your mouth and was very tasty. My partner went for the goujons and garlic chips which were also polished off. Meal and drinks were as good a price as you would get anywhere else. Will return and recommend

Rang ahead to ask if we needed to book a table for Sunday lunch and were advised no bookings are taken. Drove over hopefully anyway. We were lucky and secured an outside table on a lovely day with a view to the sea. We each had different dishes, including a special roast lamb, pasta and a burger. All were delicious and table service (due to Covid) was really friendly. Guinness was perfect too. Parking on the street close by is free as is access over the bridge to the caves seen in Game of Thrones (as we discovered later).

Able to walk in a Saturday lunchtime. They accommodated four of us in the back room, with a wood burner and large table. Pleasant, prompt service. Got beverages and excellent fare. The chowder, and the chips wIth bacon and chorizo are particularly recommended. Very reasonable value too.

Had a great even meal here, quality never disappoints.. and is very reasonably priced. Staff were very accommodating as they were very busy, so advised we wait in the outside beer garden, which was a lovely spot, some local musicians playing outside added to the atmosphere. quick efficient, friendly service, generous portions and very tasty!

We arrived on a twilight evening into the quite possibly most charming jewel of the glens, Cushendun. As the ducks paddled in the river and the gentle lapping Irish sea crowned with the distant sights of the Mull of Kintyre, my fellow diners were welcomed and shown to our table as we passed the regular patrons enjoying some craic after a hard worked week. The upstairs dining area was bright and friendly with good spacing. Starters of scallops superbly cooked, chicken wings and salad, followed with a delectable hake and seabass, steak and duck. All meals, engrossed the diners with superb flavours and delicate presentation. A true example of fine dining in the Glens and one to which we will be going back to again and again. Thank you to the kind staff for an evening of excellent service and a welcomed opening the lockdown.

Most of the bar staff are incredibly helpful however I ordered drinks at the time of last orders and spent about 10 minutes afterwards gathering ffriends in a busy bar to come and take the drink that I had ordered, only to hear that one of the owners had poured two untouched drinks away. Followed by 10/15 minutes of belittling by said person after which I was able to get a full refund the drinks that I had just ordered shortly before. Having worked in bars before I was fully aware that this was absolutely terrible service and should not be tolerated. I am a regular to the bar and have never had this happen to me before so you shouldn't let this put you off however I wanted to mark the occasion as I am utterly appalled at how this was handled. Again I will state that this has been a once off however I hope that those concerned will take note of this absolutely terrible service and learn from it so that it doesn't happen again and take away from the beautiful bar that is mary mcbrides

Ordered the chowder here as it looked good on the next table. Really disappointed, scraggly fish and way too salty. The man who I had seen having it said exactly the same on the salt. Very poor and not cheap at ÂŁ11. Lovely pub though.

We were looking for somewhere for lunch whilst travelling from Portrush to Belfast and found this. Nicely kept dining area in an attractive small pub. Staff were welcoming and cheery. They didnt take bookings but we got there earlish for lunch, It is small and did get busy with, it seemed, locals later. Fairly traditional pub fare on the whole. Except the seafood chowder which was very good. There is a good value kids menu with the a la carte a little bit on the pricey side but not too bad.

This was our first visit and our first meal out since the lock down and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, service good and the food was delicious. The scallop starter was well cooked and tasty, the sea bass with the potato and prawn cake was a lovely main course. Nice menu, will definitely be back.
