We dined for 2 with the $37pp five course menu, which had so many options it was hard to choose! We were wary there wouldn't be enough food, but actually felt full by the time the 4th dish arrived. We also had the plesant surprise of recieving a free cocktail as my partner had worn a "Hawaiian shirt" on a Friday night.
We were impressed with every dish, but even more so by the attentive service of the staff members who were extremely friendly and helpful. This made our experience all the more enjoyable and we wouldn't hesistate to visit again in a heartbeat!

What a great place with exceptional flavours and seriously good cocktails. Our group of four opted for the $37 a head five-course dinner special - any five meals with more than enough food for each person. Staff was so friendly and helpful with our choices - barramundi, pork, chicken, drunken noodles and buns. Great flavours with winning combos of sweet and sour, crunch and spice. We chose to eat indoors to escape hot night and had a great time. Will definitely be back.

This is one of my favourites in Melbourne, having lived in here for a few years I regularly go to the city location and the “sister” restaurant, but this was the first time heading to the Fitzroy restaurant and it delivered perfectly.
We did the sharing menu of 5 dishes which was terrific, showing us the best pieces of the menu and leaving us satisfied from a fantastic dinner.
however not wanting to miss out on any of the delish sounding dishes on the menu and specials list we ordered some more, it was the best choice we made on the night, maybe apart from getting the Vietnamese Espresso Martini’s

On this occasion for a party of 10 we were completely let down by their customer service . The gentleman that served us initially was accommodating and agreed that because of their table policy etc we could stay for drinks and decide later if there was a table available for food we could then have a meal . We were not fussed as there are plenty of options in this area. To begin with we had already ordered a total of over $280 dollars worth of drinks. To our horror even before it was an hour a female waiter comes up to us tells us that there is too many of us and that we can’t sit at the table on one drink for an hour ! It is the first time I have been at a place where a waitress has the audacity to speak to paying customers in that manner. We had 4 expresso martini’s, cocktails, beer and a bottle of wine and snack food that was on the table and to be told that we either needed to move upstairs with the proviso again that we can’t sit for an hour on one drink ! When question as to what our options were she then started to back paddle and said that there was a misunderstanding and that she did not realise we were there only for drinks ! What her intentions were by addressing us in this manner I do not know. All I do know is we won’t ever be returning or spending our money here ever again. We have been patrons for a long time even spending on birthday parties here and this one experience has turned our entire experience sour . Whilst the food is good and the cocktails are great we are far more interested in a whole experience where customers don’t feel like they are practically told to leave because madam just feels like you are going to be a party that sits on one drink .. that is a whole lot of rubbish ! We ended up saying that is fine we don’t like your customer service and would you like us to quickly finish our drinks that we just ordered mind you ...And leave ! She apologised for the misunderstanding but hey in hospitality 101 the damage has been done . Train your staff to have basis common courtesy and respect in this day in age for well paying customers . Your food may be good but the arrogance that comes with it will be your downfall ! The gentleman that took our orders in the first place was apologetic and calm which is to be applauded but the female waitress needs to go back to the school of basic decency. There was no basis of making us feel we were not welcome and then later apologising to us that it wasn’t your intention because you lack the knowledge as to what were there for in the first place ! We finished our drinks quickly and left to go down the street to village people hawker food hall which was an absolute treat and delight having not been there before ! GO to Village People Hawker Food Hall instead you won’t be disappointed

Excellent choices on the menu including many vegan. Specialising in sharing plates, five for $45. We selected three, which was enough for us. The twice cooked pork belly and the polenta crusted barramundi were excellent. The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. While the drinks list was quite extensive we did not like the Golden Axe Cider or the Kaiju Tropical beer which we chose. There is a choice of indoor or outdoor dining as it was over 30 degrees we ate inside. The chairs and stools are a bit uncomfortable but a cushion was brought down from the upstairs area for me which was very kind. Recommended.

Sophisticated, original and very tasty food.
I found the staff a little bit snob and pushy. I felt bad that we did not want to take the share menu, nor oysters for $5 each and not a second glass of wine, even though staff was professionally polite you could feel that they were in a hurry to have us gone. I’d go back for the delicious food anyway.

Staff were very rude. We went to this restaurant for a friends birthday and two couples did the 40pp menu while a few others ordered individual dishes. Once we finished our mains we were waiting on one dessert and a few drinks and decided to grab the bill.
When it came to settling the bill we noticed we were being overcharged for a few of the items which came under their “40 pp” menu. When we asked for our bill to be corrected the waiter said yes no problem and left our table to fix the bill.
The waiter then returned a few minutes later with another waiter who asked us what what the problem was, we then reexplained that 2 couples were being overcharged because of the 2 for 40pp menu.
We were then told we clearly ordered individual dishes and one dish which was on the menu was actually not apart of the 40pp and if we were to come back in future to make sure we order correctly off the menu.
We asked where the dessert (which they brought cutlery out for) and remaining drinks were and were told they didn’t place the order.
I can understand the restaurant was busy and it can be frustrating serving a big group but that doesn’t give anyone an excuse to be that rude.
Food was great but We won’t go back based on the way we were treated.

Visited the Fitzroy location for a small night out with my sister; Started off a little unsure as to how the vibe would be and if it could cater to what seemed like a different demographic upon first glance. Getting inside and speaking to staff we decided to just give it a chance. And may I say I’m really glad we did. The rustic vibe definitely transports you out of Melbourne and into an intimate off grid restaurant with taste. We started off with the oysters w/ green nam Jim and they were to die for, you could taste the slight hint of fresh salt from the ocean while the oyster was so fresh I thought I turned into a mermaid. My sister and I decided to share 5 of the many dishes they had available and not one disappointed.
The host first brought out the kingfish cracker and what a shame there are only two on the plate. The fish is so fatty and melts in your mouth while the supporting ingredients bring all the flavours out this dish truly does not disappoint.
Next came out the coconut snapper ceviche; while it may not have been a personal favourite, you cannot deny that there would be someone out there that finds this to be delectable. The coconut does really shine through.
Crispy coconut cups: these come out in bitesize pieces that were still very filling. The salty caviar really brings out the slight sweetness of the dish.
Loddon estate Duck: presentation was lovely, the dish was very filling. The dish is presented with lettuce cups and rice to be eaten together! The duck and lettuce are paired very nicely.
Lastly we were served the Chicken Adobo; this dish to share definitely gives you bang for your buck. We had to fight over who would take the last piece as we were too full by the time it got to us.
The drinks were a great pairing and made to perfect every time and truly saved what was going to be a dreary night. Prices are affordable with their $49 pp (min 2 people) sharing option of 5 meals.

I reviewed our invoice once i got home and found a charge for $19.60 marked "S.C." and could work out what this stood for. The following day i received an email to ask how our night went. I wrote back asking what this charge was S.C. $19.60 was, Kaitlin (Marketing Manager) replied "The SC stands for the 10% surcharge that our restaurants have on the weekend. This is there so we can make sure all our staff are paid well and to ensure our guests are well fed with the quality of food we want to deliver. I hope this helps but let me know if you have any further questions."
I replied, had i known that you expect your customers to pay additional money to pay your staff well then i would not have left a tip. I wrote back requesting a refund of $19.60 and as i expected when it all gets too hard they go to ground and don't respond.
I think this style of fees is double dipping.

In short, everything we ate was phenomenal. Casual but trendy spot that is kid friendly. We came here on a Friday night, and it was packed, so I recommend making a booking. Visited Melbourne for the first time and was recommended by a friend to try Rice Paper Scissors. Not only was the food incredible, but the drinks were also fabulous. Every dish we had was a modernized twist on a type of street food. The flavors were familiar but inventive. I was surprised by how well some of the ingredients came so well together (eg: apples, chili’s, cashews, lime, and fish?? What??!). But every dish was a burst of complex flavors. Being from Southeast Asia, I recognized many of the individual components, but I never imagined some of the combinations the chef put together.
My tummy left very happy and full. Great service, excellent food - can’t ask for more than that. I’m sad to leave Melbourne, but the next time I return, you can bet I’ll be back to eat here again.
P.S. maybe next time we’ll try their sister restaurant, though I don’t yet believe they accept bookings at that location.

We dined here on NYE, so coming off the end of a lengthy lockdown here in Melbourne, we were pleased to see what was a fairly seamless operation. We've dined at the now closed sister restaurant in Hardware Lane, many times and it was always one of our favourites , however as that is no longer in service then this was our next option. Pleasantly surprised that the food was very, very good. We chose the five course option and found it to be adequate in amount. My only gripe would be, there were very few options for a red wine by the glass. Seemed to be that many in the place were cocktail drinkers. I'd definately go back again.

Six of us went for a work lunch and left very disappointed. The restaurant was half empty but were forced to order a banquet. It was overpriced and vegetarian options were little. To add insult to injury there is an extra charge for the 'signature dish'.
Overall, you feel it is about money and not great food and service. There are better and more authentic Asian food options on Smith Street, Collingwood.

I went with a friend and we thought that the 5 dishes between two was not going to be filling. But we were proven wrong. We loved all the dishes - we had the thai cakes, coconut snapper ceviche, Burmese lentil curry, crispy barramundi, and kohlrabi salad. All fantastic.
The service is good but it was really busy so I don't expect the waiters to be attending to me quickly. The food came out well-paced and the waiters were nice. I did have to wait a while to get their attention to order. But once I did, they were lovely. IDK there's a few comments on subpar service here and I really don't get it.
Anyway, me and my friend had a great time. In terms of pricing, it is actually affordable if you consider the pricing for similar restaurants. I'd consider RPS on the same level as Cookie but it's way cheaper for two people.

I have heard such great things about rice paper scissors which is why I was so disappointed about my experience. While booking I checked my dietary requirements as being halal and non-alcoholic. I was greeted by a worker who knew this then our waitress said she would not guarantee cross contamination would not take place but did not care to clarify which items we could have. Then a third waitress was actually helpful and made recommendations. Furthermore, we had booked a table for two outside and requested to be moved to another table of the same description but they refused, telling us that it had been booked. The whole time that table remained empty.
I also did not find the food that great. It was interesting but not as grand as I have heard about. I think the service really ruined the experience, unfortunately.
The best food on the menu was the taro curry.

We usually love dining at Rice Paper Scissors, but last night we felt the service wasn’t up to the standard we normally experience at this restaurant. Understandably they were busy on a Friday night however staff seemed to forget our order on multiple occasions and we were waiting around 30-45 minutes between the first 3 items of the feasting menu. Before our last two main items were served we had one waiter give us our dessert, which they took away after we told them we had 2 more mains coming.
Luckily the food was incredible and up to the standard we normally would expect at rice paper scissors 😊

Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
