What a wonderful place! The owner welcomed us, brought us our drinks, all the while engaging us in good conversation. After ordering the roasted lamb (for 3 of us) and a salad, the chef came out and suggested the sardines with tomato to start. I...wasn't sure about that, but they were amazing - dense, rich, and flavorful. Not like american sardines at all! And the roast was fabulous, great jus, falling off the bone, amazing flavor. The owner even showed us the wood oven - which was really neat. Overall a very memorable lunch, great people, and amazing food. Gracias!!More
Great place in the shadow of the penafiel castle to try Lechazo Al Horno, the regional specialty. Great wines and the service from friendly attentive staff could not make you feel more at home. The famous Ribera Del Duero wines go great with your meal....Could not recommend it more. It definitely "merece la pena".More
This might be a good restaurant, but we don't know, as we were here on a Sunday and they only served "lechazo" (suckling lamb) and "bacalao" (salted cod). There is no menu outside, which is a major shortcoming at many restaurants in Peñafiel. Why is...this a problem in this area and not in the rest of Spain ? In short, we ordered some dishes that we knew we would not like too much (as there were no alternatives, not in this restaurant and not elsewhere) ... and we were right. Moreover, we did not know what would be their price, which is always dangerous and a recipe for dissatisfaction. We would not recommend this restaurant on a Sunday, but maybe it is OK throughout the week ... if they display their menu, at least !More
This is the place to go !!! Locals mix with travelers from all over the world in perfect harmony... best local food and drinks in town ... just let them pick their favorites and you will be set !
We were recommended by a local business to try this place out. Hands down, the best lamb I’ve ever had. The owner (assuming he was the owner) was very kind and treated us like family. We had the mixed salad, oven roasted lamb, a great...bottle of house recommended wine, and a few extras he threw in as well. Very nice dining experience with great food and a great host.More
We came for lunch after a tasting visit to a local bodegas. No reservation, and they were open on a quiet Monday in Peñafiel. Reception was warm and gracious. Server let us know dishes which were meant to be shared (the mixed salad starter course,...which was huge). I’d love to share photos of our dishes, but we ate them before we thought about it! My cod entree was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and my husband enjoyed his sirloin steak entree. Fun time for us.More
Best lamb!! Good friendly setting shared with friends and family. Could do with some veggies and rice with meal.
We stopped off here on our way from Amarante (where we could not find anything interesting for lunch) to the Quinta da Aveleda vineyard (worth a trip!). I had chicken, my wife, the seafood. We loved our hosts (have no idea of names) particularly a...young waiter who charmed us both. Great to watch the cooks over the counter in the kitchen. Well priced. Try to find this one if you're not from the area.More
Generous portions of highly salted lamb chops, meaty stews, and garlicy shrimp. This is a family friendly location with an unremarkable menu.
Lechazo is the specialty of the house and in this part of Spain, I recommend you try the dish at Asados Don Jose. The place is small so go close to opening hours. Your host is a friendly man who welcomes you with smiles and...great service. We began with a simple green salad that was garden fresh and big enough for two people. Then the lechazo which was roasted to perfection. The portion is easily enough for two people, or even three, so the price is very fair. Finish up with coffee and dessert and you've had a great meal that honours the traditions of Spain. Go slow and enjoy.More
We ordered their popular dish, lechazo, (suckling lamb) and it did not disappoint. The server (which could have easily been the owner) was extremely nice. The side dish of a pickled asparagus was good and the desserts were yummy. I think going here while staying...in Penafiel or nearby is worth it. We honestly got the meat sweats because we "had" to finish the delicious dish.More
Super lamb in the oven. Matching wine as suggested by Jose. Added a salad and some fries but superb prepared lamb and attentive service.
Great food, brilliant atmosphere and helpful enthusiastic owner for whom nothing was too much trouble. The beef and lamb were both top class. Would be my first port of call next time I'm in Penafiel.
We had never visited this village before so we didn´t know how was the restaurant we were going to have dinner in. He offered us smoked sardines with a coat of fresh chopped tomatoe vinaigrette and then we had roasted lamb. Both dishes were gorgeous....The owner was really nice.More
