We arrive late to Peñafiel (3:00pm) and have heard of this restaurant by some friend’s recommendations. We didn’t have a reservation. My wife approached a man that explained her that it was full for the lunch time. My wife went out of the restaurant and...told me that we should look for another place and suddenly, the man came to us and told us that he would clean a table for us but we have to be patient because still they were very busy serving other tables. We sat at the table and it was a delightful experience. The “lechazo” was phenomenal and the “croquetas” were (according to my daughter) among the best croquetas ever. In summary, great great place. I strongly recommend to make a reservation and lunch time is the best time to eat there because I can not imagine going bed having eaten such amount of tasty foodMore
Excellent place, very nice staff, excellent wine, excellent food! A place you have to visit. They have some tables in the old basement, unfortunately the day we went was not in service. We were only allowed to visit
Nice price ands quick service. I enjoyed the tender steak and salad was simple (tomato lettuce and slced onion) but fresh
We went there for lunch today with friends and our kids, party of 9. We all loved it very much. Food menu is quite simple but very well prepared. Meat were cooked to perfection and all products very fresh. Our teenagers really enjoyed the generous...portions. As written in many other reviews the lamb is delicious and his almost a must. We also took the mixed table with a variety of meats, cold cuts and fishes...very good as well, just one drawback, only 2 pieces of a very good cheese, 4 pieces more would just be perfect. Today, we couldn't drink but the wine list looked good and affordable. Definitely a good place to recommend.More
We were taken downstairs to the caved area of the restaurant and that alone was a fantastic experience The food was amazing a truly Spanish feast, the house wine was served in a traditional pitcher and was quite nice The most delectable traditional cheesecake and...limoncello was the perfect ending for the meal The staff was quite hospitable however they hardly could speak english and they got one order mixed due to thatMore
This is a picturesque local restaurant with a staff that aims to please. Our host visited the restaurant on several occasions and let us to this place. The first courses were outstanding. We had octopus and outstanding asparagus. The asparagus was so good that one...of our party elected to ask for a second helping. The milk fed baby lamb was interesting and unique. It’s not an entrée one would order frequently but when in Spain etc. The rest of the menu looked great too. I recommend this restaurant.More
We went to this place after visiting a winery, Even though the lamb was nice, it was not the best I tried in my life. Service is good and there are homemade desserts available. The place is big enough and it keeps a beautiful surprise...downstairs...More
On a recent family trip in Ribera del Duero, we went back to El Lagar. The Lechazo is a roasted lamb that did not make its 21 st day birthday, and is so succulent, delicate, the crispy skin is so delicious with some local wine....Our server, Juan José was helpful and charming. We had a sensational time and lunchMore
The people in and around Peñafiel are lucky to have this restaurant! The house doesn’t look very big but has several floors. They serve local products and a grilled lamb that just melts in your mouth. The wine that came with the food was also...very good. Nice staff. We hope to come back!More
Finally we got to try the local delicacy of Lechazo (roast baby lamb) and it was amazing. The service here is great, the food is brilliant, the wine selection is vast and the coffee might be the nicest we've had in our 5 years in...Spain. We tried our hardest to finish the lamb but failed - however the guy was happy to wrap it up for us to take away. Right - that's enough writing. I'm off for a nap/lamb-coma.More
The suckling lamb /quarter leg of lamb "lechazo"/roasted in wood fired oven was absolutely the best I have ever had.Sugested wine by Juanjo -Mattarromera,outstanding,thank a lot to him for very attentive nice service.Woth to stoping here.Interesting basement cellar.
We stopped for lunch at this cozy little roasters during on wine tour of Ribera del Douro. The blood pudding and chorizo appetizer was the best I have ever had. The roast suckling lamb was amazing and worth stopping here for. Desert was also very...good. Service was good, especially for Europe. This place is worth a stop and very enjoyable!More
This is a real asador or roasting place. There is a big, wood fired oven as you come in which is where the serious cooking goes on. The thing to eat is a quarter leg of lamb ("lechazo") which feeds two. All they ask is...what you want with it. A simple salad is great and we had the local cheese with quince as a dessert. This is a real lagar where they pressed the grapes to make wine. The tornillo or screw for the press is a corner of the bar on the main floor. Go down the steps and you will see a stone in the floor which which was the bottom of the press. Go to the end of this room and down another set of stairs for see the cave. Grape pressing was done on the gravity system so one keeps going down. We found the staff very friendly, but with not much English. The lamb was succulent with that wonderful crispy skin, the salad very fresh and the the cheese delicious. It was the food we looked for in a location that was very authentic. We enjoyed a local wine with our meal. The other good thing is that it has a small parking lot near it and if that is full, the public parking at the base of the Peñafiel castle is nearby. Once you have experienced the narrow streets of Peñafiel, you will appreciate the parking. Penafiel is full of caves under the city where wine was made in the old days. All around the city you will see "lunares", small chimney-like structures with windows at the top. These feed fresh air into the wine caves. Friends of mine in the other major wine area, La Rioja, told me they played in their caves as children but always took a candle with them to know when there was not enough oxygen. My tip is to have this meal at 2 pm for lunch when you have the rest of the day to digest it. Going to bed with this on your stomach is tough.More
Was told about this place by a local and we went early afternoon. We did not have a reservation (we got very lucky). They did find us a table for 2 though, even though the place was full. Its multi level and the basement cellar...is a very neat place! We ate on top level and our waiter was great! We speak very very little english and he spoke a little so that helped tremendously! I had lamb and girlfriend had a beef dish tat had a huge amount of beef! I wish i knew how old the place is, because it looks incredibly old. There is one guy that cooks with wood fire over all the food. Overall, it was great experience, but get a reservation.More
