Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I CONFIRM AND ENDORSE ALL PREVIOUS BAD COMMENTS ABOUT THIS CAFE DO NOT EVER ENTER THIS CAFE UNLESS YOU HAVE POLICE PROTECTION. THE MAN IS A MANIAC THIS CAFE SHOULD BE CLOSED MY POST ON FACE BOOK. THE BAFE BAKERY----LUMSDEN. I was refused service and...asked to leave this cafe today because I opened the pie warmer to view the options. I could not see the pies for signs over the sliding doors. One being not to help myself. I was just looking, had no intensions of touching. The owner said his bit in an unkind way, threatening me with a call to police. I walked out of his shop, never to return. I suggest you tread carefully if you support this bakery. P.S.the police did not turn up. IM NOT WASTING MY TIME ON THIS SUBJECT ANY MORE.More

The owners are weird and seem to enjoy being less than polite. The doughnuts are indeed wonderful. However, they are somewhat expensive. First time I have come across a ban on consuming your purchases on the premises due to Level 2 restrictions - thus underscoring...my 'weird' comment above.More

I'm shocked at how rude the owners are. Any question was snapped at, I felt uncomfortable asking anything about the food on offer. There wasn't an ounce of friendliness which is unusual for this area. They have a massive chip on their shoulders. The food...wasn't even as great as the other reviews had mentioned which makes me wonder if the reviews are legit. And the options are extremely limited. Please don't go here.More

Wow!! Still drooling over these amazing donuts and muffins. Real lovely owners- how NZ used to be. Friendly and efficient barista with his holiday shirt on, and all homemade goodies. Loved it, a must stop on the way to Queenstown, or anywhere!!

We came across The Bafe when travelling through Lumsden; we had heard about the famous famous doughnuts on the grapevine and they were the best! The other bread based goodies were pretty awesome too!. The doughnut - wither raspberry, passionfruit, caramel-chocolate, when we called in...are the genuine thing- with yeast and a crisp skin without being greasy. The best kept secret ( watching the passing business trade call in for what they know is really good food and buying several and to take home)More

We stopped here to pick up a sandwich and saw the doughnuts oh WOW they are the BEST doughnuts we have ever eaten. They are crunchy on the outside and taste yeasty and yummy on the inside all filled with fresh cream and a delicious...dollop of raspberry ...truly unbelievable! We have deviated twice now to especially go to this bakery.More

Twice now we have attempted to visit your cafe due to a recommendation, and twice it was closed. This is despite the website saying you are open. I think you need to modify website to make it accurate. Will not attempt again. Went down the...road to a lovely tearoom and had good service and a lovely coffee.More

Sorry for the misleading information, we changed our hours when we shifted premises and Covid-19 altered everything.

Best cream doughnuts. Ever. We had the caramel drizzled ones and gained a new appreciation for life. Delicious lattes. The owners were so kind - sharing tips on what to see around the area, etc. even coming out to our vehicle after we’d left the...shop to give us a magazine on must-sees in NZ. Rare to see that level of service & kindness! Our only regret is we didn’t stock up with additional doughnuts before we left!!More

DON’T EVER COME HERE!!! The food looked old and stale. Also, we have never experienced such a rude owner in our life. Tried to literally fight us when we only bought tea. Avoid this place at all cost. There are other places in town.

The owner is a real jerk. Forced us to leave even though we were just sitting there working on our computers after ordering something. He said we weren't allowed to do that even though it's not mentioned anywhere that you're not allowed to. They after...we started to pack up and leave he cornered us and refused to let us leave until I apologized to him. I had to shove him out of the way so we could leave. He has some serious issues he needs to work out. Word of advice to the owner. If you don't want people working there, put up a sign.More

I asked a question while queuing, the man behind the counter proceeded to give a very rude reply then turned his back and started serving customers behind me. There are at least two other cafes in the town, so give them your business instead.

Stumbled across this place whilst passing through Lumsden - what a find! Great coffee and cakes available - we had two (giant) muffins, one apple and rhubarb and one peach and passionfruit. Our only disappointment was a few days later travelling back through Lumsden to...find they had closed for Christmas!More

We often stop here to get a pie, these are the best pies in Southland, especially the lamb pies, the donuts are also delicious!
