Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Eating places are few and far between in this part of New Zealand so we were glad of finding the Tavern open on Waitangi Day-an important public holiday in the country. The restaurant does not look good with black plastic seats and benches and formica tables. The poor girl behind the counter where you order food was clearly harassed and stressed but she was cheerful and charming throughout our ordering of our food, and very patient when my wife’s card did not initially work.
She warned us that there was a 40 minute wait. She was wrong-we waited 50 minutes. However the food, when it arrived, was good. My meat of my lamb shank fell off the bone, the creamed potatoes were very creamy and the gravy delicious. My wife’s gf pan-fried fish was excellent and the chips also. They gad a good selection of beers, wines and spirits as you would expect as they are a bar as well. I would recommend them as long as you are not in a hurry.

The staff are well enough presented and are friendly enough but they don't exactly go the extra mile. I think everyone needs to try just a little bit harder at the moment. The menu looked great but we chose to get takeaway Fish and Chips. Opted for the snapper. Servings were very generous but the fish batter was extremely fatty, oily, soggy and the fish was slightly overcooked. Edible but not the best fish and chips that we have had on this trip.

Stopped here with grandchildren miss 4yrs and miss 6yrs. We were made to feel very welcome by Tane the new manager who seated us and gave us the extensive menu to peruse.
The chef was cheery and adapted the menu for our children's fussy needs.
Tane was efficient and attentive, cheerful and friendly.
The meal was simple and good. And so cheap!
An iconic kiwi pub set in a gorgeous location.
We will be back.

We ordered 3 x Fish and Chips and the young lady who took our order looked at us when we ordered 3 meals like we are crazy to eat that much food. When the food arrived we were very surprised : 1 small piece of fish with a really small amount of chips and maybe a spoonful of salad was on each plate. The food did taste ok, but the portions was way too small for the $34.50 we paid per plate. It was the worst experience eating out we had on our 2 weeks long holiday.

I'm sorry you felt like this and just to be clear it sounds like the snapper mains you ordered not just standard fish and chips. We appreciate your feedback and hope the rest of your trip goes well.

Popped into Collingwood for Takeaways at the Tavern for a late light lunch..it was good that they were open to serve us and the place was very clean and tidy.
However we but received poor and very unfriendly service from guy who reluctantly took our order...Very overpriced Fish and Chips @$53 for a light meal...the GF Blue Cod was the size of a Fish Finger and served in Styrofoam. The smallest single scoop of chips I have seen. No salt, no offer of anything else, no thank you. Would not go back again. More clearly needed in Collingwood...

Apologies for the unfriendly service, that is definitely not the norm for the Tavern. As for the scoop of chips its weighed at 500gms which is a good portion for $4.20.
The reason for serving your gluten free blue cod in styrofoam is because it is pan fried and it will stick to paper. Also when you pan fry fish it tends to shrink but still should have be bigger than a fish finger.
We would have loved to rectify the situation at the time and hope you give us another opportunity in the future.

We had a very yummy dinner at the Collingwood Tavern tonight. Fettuccine with chicken for her and snapper (really really fresh) salad and chips for me. Plus 2 beers and a glass of Madam Sass, Central Otago, pinot noir for $100. Real Kiwi tavern atmosphere with visitors, tourists and locals.

The Collingwood Tavern is on the main street of Collingwood where there is plenty of parking but if you are staying in town then it will be walking distance from most accommodation.
We called in late in the afternoon to check the menu and having discovered there was a roast that night decided to stay for dinner.
The staff were helpful and pleasant and we didn't have to wait too long for our meal.
The meal was really delicious and generous servings. Because we were in NZ we decided to finsh off our meal with a pavlova - also yummy.

We were a group of four. We were looking for a meal after a tour to Farewell Spit. It was a busy time and we were told there would be an hour's wait. We could understand that so we decided not to stay and we would come come back the next night, which we did. At that time there were not many patrons waiting but we still had over an hour's wait for our meals to arrive. We ordered whitebait, which we know are expensive. We had the option of two or three fritters. Three fritters were of course quite a bit more expensive that two. After a very long wait we received our meals each with two fritters. We were informed we had two fritters but we had the same quantity of whitebait as we would have got had we been given three fritters. How does that work? Why offer three? Overall not at all happy. An expensive meal which turned out to be pretty ordinary, even for a pub meal.

Very much a relaxed local pub type feel. We took our dogs so sat in outdoor area. Meals were average and pricey especially when you had to go get the food yourself. No table service at all. No attempt by staff to engage ‘how was your meal?’ or anything when paying. I think better options in the region if paying $30-$38 for a main.

We called in on a cold wet miserable evening and the welcome we received inside reflected exactly the weather outside. The attitude of the staff made it clear they didn't want 'another' customer!
Won't be going there again.

Had a delicious roast evening meal here after full day walking snd exploring. Hadn’t realised how hungry I was until
My meal was in front of me. Nicely cooked roast of the day with good variety of vegetables and tasty gravy. Was well worth the wait! So delicious and cooked to perfection. Thank you!

With the wood burner fired and the rugby playing on the big screen this bar represents everything you want from your rural local. The Sunday Roast (Lamb) was great as were the Bluff Oysters and Apple Crumble. The service was friendly, thanks for welcoming us into your place.

Coarse clientele who think the f word is acceptable in a family pub. Beer good. Food was a bit short of usual NZ standard, chips weren’t that good and other stuff like a Tinky’s pie only average.

OMG - great value for your money! Amazing meals and a great place to wind down after a day exploring. We played pool, talked with the locals, and had two amazing meals here. Good old fashion pub meals. The roasts were well proportioned and the lamb shank was to die for! Fabulous service by a very friendly team of professionals. We will be back!

The place was full on a Monday night and they clearly do a roaring takeaway trade as well. The wait was over 45 minutes but we were warned clearly up front so all good. The food was worth waiting for. Bluff oysters followed by ribeye (him) and lamb shank for me. Both were fab. Good enough wine and beer selection to keep us happy. Atmosphere very friendly but no frills. This is a tavern.
