Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ordered Blue Cod. $40 per person. It was cooked from frozen, no taste, no flavour and a section of my Blue cod wasn’t cooked fully. A rabbit would have loved the salad, it was a variety of lettuce with a slice of red onion,...grated carrot and a tiff of sprouts. Like many New Zealanders we don’t complain, we don’t write a poor review. We would not go back again!More

We were lucky enough that this particular Thursday night was their first for the summer season. Handy for campers with Pakawau Holiday Camp across the road and handy for us being about 10 minutes from Collingwood. Seafood chowder, perfectly cooked steak and beautiful blue cod,...everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals.More

Just spent the weekend at this beautiful out of the way place. The food was great and the owners Jamie and Wendy were amazing hosts. With the near by camp ground and holiday park you could not ask for better way to spend the evening...while looking around the amazing country side. I have no hesitation in recommending the Old School Cafe. Good friendly service as well. ShellyMore

A great place; what a rural pub/restaurant should be; and friendly, even if you aren't a local. Amazing choice on the menu and while the three of us didn't sample everything on the menu, since there was far too much on offer, what we each...did have on both nights was perfect. Friendly staff, nice location and they even have a pool table and darts room out of the main dining/bar/fire-side lounge area (but still a few seconds away from the refreshments). The only disappointment was that I couldn't beat the host Jamie at either darts or pool. I can however guarantee that my wife I and our friend will be back.More

Whether it's a cuppa, something stronger, a snack, or a full meal, the Old Schoolhouse has what you want, and what you didn't know you wanted until you got there and saw the extensive bar and blackboard menu. All that and some local history too!...Spare a thought for the generations of school kids who didn't have as much fun there as you're going to!More

Had a pizza for lunch.. Crusty and full of flavour. Went back for dinner and had ribs and the fish. Ribs were good and sufficient for me. The Mrs had the fish. It was fresh and very tasty.. Only criticism is that it was cooked...in too much oil, stole some of the joy out of the meal. Great service and was nice to know the owners were on the front line. Overall its probably a little over priced but good value. Will be back.More

Stayed at the Pakawau beach camp and was impressed with this wee cafe and bar right across the road. Only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday but absolutely worth supporting Jamie and Wendy when they’re open. Coffee was great, nice wine selection, tasty chowder , yummy...pizzas , and fabulous friendly staff. I have heard rumours from the locals the ribs on Friday night and pork belly Saturday nights are a must have.More

Great meals. Great people. If you are in this area you need to visit this hidden gem. Very relaxing atmosphere in an old rural school. Books on the tables of the history of the area gives you plenty to look and talk about..

What a great place and a surprise at the top end of the South Island. Everything we had at the restaurant was absolutely delicious. The service was great and we loved every moment there. The POP is one of the best we have stayed in...- wth the cafe/ restaurant an added bonus. We would definitely recommend this place to others.More
